  1. Don't know about the cds but those DVDs are great. I heard about them when Peter Goralnick (sp?) was here plugging the Scorscese tv series about the Blues but implied that these were better.
  2. The Mainman release contains eight titles recorded in Kansas City, August 1951. The Alamac has a ninth - a second version of "Leo the Lion". It is known that they also played in St. Louis. The additional title may be from the St. Louis concert. Btw, the Mainman also contains three fine tracks by Clifford Brown & Max Roach. I've got a cd of it from "Drive Archive". Nine cuts and according to the liner notes the 2nd version of Leo the Lion is from the same night. Bird supposedly wasn't happy with his playing the first time and asked to try it again later. '
  3. Well to paraphrase Lady Day, do you want comfort or speed?
  4. I think David Berger has done the charts and makes them available. I can find out of you like.
  5. So they anounce that the latest Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour is about "moon" and the first thing he plays is Bird doing Ornithology. Then after exclaiming something like "Wasn't that great" he adds "and now here's a song based on the chord changes of Ornithology", and plays Les Paul and Mary Ford's "How High the Moon"! Either Dylan or the guy who writes for him is pretty hip.
  6. My father-in-law likes to tell how he used to go see Victor Feldman in London when he was still a child prodigy playing drums
  7. Oh, so if someone posts significantly more in the political forum than anywhere else and likes to argue with people they don't agree with, their presence here should be questioned? Johnny E Dr. Funkenstein Member Group: Members Joined: 10-March 03 Active Stats User's local time Dec 8 2006, 08:20 PM Total Cumulative Posts 5543 ( 4 posts per day / 0.99% of total forum posts ) Most active in Politics ( 6692 posts / 88% of this member's active posts ) But it's obvious Johnny cares about music. Why has Dolan joined this forum? If you just like to argue with people you don't agree with there are plenty of forums. Why join one about jazz?
  8. It was better before you arrived. 96% of your posts are in the political forum and the rest seem to be in ones like this where you get in an arguement with someone. Have you ever posted in a music thread? Do you even like jazz?
  9. About 40 years ago I won about 3 times in one summer. I still remember the questions: I identified John Coltrane and Jethro Tull when recods were played and I knew who wrote Willie and the Hand-Jive. I won tickets to an all day rock festival, a John-Lee Hooker concert and a copy of Abby Road. All on Chum-FM in Toronto.
  10. Probably the line thatt suggests that what a drum and a woman have in common is that you beat them.
  11. I didn't vote because I don't want to say anyone has crappy taste. Taste is a personal thing. But I do believe that none of these is as essential as the new Ellington that's being shipped (they claim) on December 13th so we can all get it for Xmas.
  12. See this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...144&hl=DVDs I'd add that The Greatest Jazz Films Ever is now available through True Blue.
  13. Hey I just heard a A Prairie Home Companion from Cincinnati in which Garrison Keillor did ten minutes on Sid Nathan.
  14. something abou the color of the performer, and your average country music fan of the 60's to be exact. Downtown where? How could you live anywhere large enough to have a downtown and not know Ray Charles wasn't White. What'd I say and Georgia on my Mind were all over the radio and even some tv previous to the country records.
  15. I don't remember the cover. What didn't people like about it ?
  16. Where? I really like Geoff Muldaur and much to my surprise he showed up in Santa Barbara at a church hall with a $10 admission fee! The place almost full but that was only about 50 people.
  17. I'm back. It was awfully good.
  18. I dunno. My 17 year old writes a lot better than this. And so do many of his friends.
  19. I keep reading about the differences between the 2 but no ones seems to say defintively which is best. Also is there a good monitor with no receiver or speakers available?
  20. In 2 hours: Charlie Haden's Quartet West.
  21. President Ralph Kaffel. I once met Saul Zaentz and thanked him. I guess I thanked the wrong guy.
  22. Yes it does! Just happened to me.
  23. Having heard Lou on records with Art Blakey and Brownie and really digging him I got "Natural Soul" and was underwhelmed. BTW is there a reason it's not included in the Mosaic?
  24. So do I. Jazz '34 has the performances at full lenght without interruption by the film cast. Why was the VHS tape rejected? You can see a fragment in my web log !! ( Keep swinging web log ) Keep swinging Durium I think it was because they had paid the musicians and crew for one film, not two. Or maybe because it was done as a PBS broadcast and they were only paid for that. THE AFM frowns on that. As a result there's never been a legitimate release of The Sound of Jazz.
  25. I don't care much for Kansas City but love Jazz '34. Unfortunately I think it's never been released on DVD and was only available on VHS briefly before being withdrawn for legal reasons.
