you sure know more about this than me... but isn't it the common story (doesn't mean it's true) that Miles and Gil Evans got to know each other when Evans wanted to arrange Donna Lee... maybe they just talked about publishing rights... still I would say it indicates that the Davis had more to do with Donna Lee than ... Richard Carpenter with Walkin
(not that Carpenter's name would often be mentioned these days without a mention of Walkin... still I hope you know what i mean)
I think I remember reading that Evans approached Bird about Donna Lee for advice when he wanted to arrange it for the Thornhill band. Bird told him to talk to Miles who had written it.
Why do you think Richard Carpenter (who ever he is) didn't write Walkin'?
Bob Parent was a well known jazz photographer in NY. He also wrote a column on 8mm filmmaking for a magazine I used to help edit. I met him once and like an idiot never asked if I could purchase any prints from him. (A parallel story is that I once worked with the late film composer Georges Delarue. I had been collecting French 45's of his film music in the early 60's but never even told him about them never mind ask him to autograph them.
I saw Wingy play in Paris once at a left bank club! It was fun but didn't impress me enough to run out an buy any records. However, I'm nuts about Pee Wee and he may play on enough cuts here to make me consider buying this set.
I had the cd playing in my car, driving with my 17 year son-- a fan of The Foo Fighters etc.-- who suddenly exclaimed "Hey this is interesting music!" which from him is high praise.
I think sometime last summer Variety reported that Van's show at Red Rock was the highest grossing show of the week. I guess those $125 tickets add up. Last time I saw him he was with Dylan and Joni Mitchell but the tickets weren't that expensive. I love The Man and since 1969 I've seen him about 4 times but I don't think I'd pay $125 to see him again. I guess that's what performers who appeal to aging boomers can charge nowadays.
I just discovered that Coda Magazine now has a website: http://www.coda1958.com/index.htm. Unfortunately their on-line subscription system doesn't seem to be working right now. However they will take subs via e-mail.
They're selling back issues too.
I think I saw him once the summerof 62 but to be honest don't remember much about him except that I was surprised to find good jazz musicians in Vancouver.
How close were you to the loud guy in the audience whose screaming almost drowns out the band?
I always wondered if this guy was the reason Elvis has has stayed away from live recordings for so long.
Where we were sitting we didn't notice him. The band was really loud. My wife has worn ear plugs to concerts ever since.
I first saw Elvis at a club in Edinburough in the summer of '76. Never heard of him before but ended up dancing on the tables. Went back to Toronto and told all my students about him. They laughed. A year later he was playing the biggest hall in town. Then got to see him at the El Mocombo (the concert that's in the Ryko box-- which btw leaves out Nick Lowe sitting in and singing "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass"). By the time I moved to L.A, I had to go to the Greek to see him. Sort of lost interest until The River in Reverse but then I'm a big Alan Toussaint fan (even if I've probably spelled his name wrong).
I've never been divorced but from what I've heard from friends it's tough even if you're the one who wanted it!
So be prepared for some tough times but keep in mind that this too will pass. I don't really have any advice but it sure sounds like you should get out of Kansas.
Best of luck and hang in there.
That's the one on iTunes. The other Amazon link
"Japanese import version: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008K75...8&s=music"
seems to contain three of tracks with just haawkins.
Just looked for a copy of a pm I'd sent last week and saw that there's nothing in my "Sent" folder that's less than year old. Is there some setting or preference I've screwed up?
The cd in the Amazon link seems to be a diffferent one than the cd in question. However 3 of the cuts from it are on the iTunes download though Eldridge and Hodges do not play on them. What's the song list on the
Hawkins! Eldridge!.... cd. It's not given on AMG.
