  1. I was given that cd by Forrest Westbrook's daughter who was responsible for its release.
  2. Does it touch on the debt the autobiography owes to Jack Chambers' biography of Miles? I got the impression that Miles/Troupe used it as a guide and every-so-often outright cribbed from it.
  3. IIRC it was originally on United Artists.
  4. I'm happy to send you mine if you don't mind waiting for cheap, and presumably slow, delivery. Sounds like you'd appreciate it more than I do. (I'll put it in an envelope and mail it. Given its size I think I can get away with that-- though I'm not sure.) DM me your snail mail address.
  5. You're right. Because it's literally deteriorating in my hands I only looked at a few pages. BTW Where is there a market for this? Maybe I can sell it before it completely disintegrates.
  6. Here's and example from 1944. Mainly reprints of earlier articles form the magazine but concentrating on what they consider "hot" jazz.
  7. I have 4 of "The Esquire Jazz Collection" including the above mentioned "Toward the Light". The others I have are: "Breakthrough", "The Voices of Soul", and "Crosstown Traffic" and they contain cuts from Bluenote or other EMI owned product with an explanation of the parallels between Bluenote and Esquire. (Basically they both started in the '30s.) Happy to send you a scan of the note if you like. I presume I got them for free. Don't know why else I'd have them.
  8. Happy Bloomsday!
  9. And here it is. (They played it again on KCRW. ) No but I tapped my foot.
  10. I had worked at Universal a few years before and lived relatively nearby. I remember the night of the fire worrying about what was stored there.
  11. It wasn't either of these. I'll try to find out. (Not that it maters.)
  12. I just heard a dj on KCRW play a dance remix sampling At Love Supreme (including Trane's "vocal"). Can't find the name of the artist because although KCRW has a playlist on-line, the 20 minutes during which this was played is, for some reason, not posted. Is this sacrilegious or spreading the word?
  13. Hey kid get off of my lawn.
  14. I know that at least a few musicians keep their masters stored in a vault in Hollywood where I would want to be in case of a major disaster.
  15. Great movie! What did you think of it? On TCM last week. I always wanted to see it because it is based on The Maltese Falcon. IMBD describes it as a parody of Falcon and that might be the best way to watch it. Pretty awful but it has its moments.
  16. I'd almost only seen cursive until I began teaching at an architecture school. All of the students printed everything (is that what you call it whenm you don't use cursive) and it looked great and was easy to read. Also they did it very quickly. Immediately tried to emulate them but my printing was almost as bad as my cursive-- which is to say illegible even by me.
  17. The Times story is worth trying to read, though it never explains (unless I missed it) how he got back to Paris from Berlin.
  18. I saw that gig. Probably the first, and least favorite, time I saw Sonny. Can't remember why I didn't like it but he seemed to be struggling with the influence of Coltrane. (At least that's what I remember but after all these years who knows-- I may just have been in a bad mood. )
  19. You might try his autobiography "Child of the Century". ( I read it many years ago and don't remember much except some funny anecdotes.)
  20. https://www.nola.com/entertainment/2019/06/dr-johns-second-line-parade-rambled-through-the-treme-friday.html
  21. None of the descriptions suggest that there has been a sonic upgrade of any kind-- or am I missing something?
  22. I saw him several times over the years. Ran into him on the street in Cleveland the day after I'd seen him on a double bill with Aaron Neville. I couldn't stop myself: I wandered up to him and said "Hey Mac, What's up? You were great yesterday!". He thanked me and continued getting on to his tour bus.
  23. Playing together? Even as a triple bill that's pretty great.
  24. This one: We've seen Van a few times but this is from before our time here at a venue they no longer use for rock. (He's playing the Santa Barbara Bowl this summer one of only 3 places he's playing in the US.) Took her to the new Miramar instead. We save Super Rica for when our son is home.
