The Bee Hive Session: Unissued Tunes Vol. One It's been out since 1983, but Cadence has a few left at $10. 6 tunes on nice, quiet red vinyl. 4 songs are over 7 minutes. Nick Brigola Johnny Hartman Sal Salvador(2) Sal Nistico Walte Davis Wish I had more from this small, hard to find/afford label. The Hartman tune and the Nistico(tenor)Ronnie Mathews (piano) duet stand out for me. Walter Davis Jr. also cuts loose on a nice tune.

Thanks, Brownie. I find the public domain issues interesting, if not troublesome. I see now how this will be a good thing to the many consumers, but I do not think it's for me. It could get very confusing. So much info could be missing from the PD re-issues. Original liner notes and credits, for starters. I like getting single albums or CD's and having all the info right there. Box sets are ok if they are fully annotated and easy to follow. I do not want to look up where the songs come from(original album), where and when recorded, etc.. As I've mentioned before, I'm worried the original labels will loose shelf space and thus income, and any incentive to re-issue the material again. I see it happening already. My local store had a ton of PD re-issues and little from the original labels like Blue Note and Verve.

LMAO!! That is so funny!! I just got done listening to, what I thought were, all eight takes of that song. I know why this is possibly stone mint. It's a DJ/Promo copy and there are a few notations in pencil on the individual sleaves referring to false starts, etc.. It would have driven a DJ crazy to play this LP, as many tracks have two false starts and then a clean, full take inside the same band. Too much work to figure out, so he probably shelved it. They did not leave much out. There is sharp, loud whistling from the engineer to the band that scares the crap out of me every time he does it.

Does anyone know some of the the inner workings of these labels? A purchase I made yesterday and the Johnny Hodges Mosaic FS thread got me wondering, again. On the CD's, do they note their source? Do they say anything about the material being public domain? Do they note the original LP/CD title/label and catalog number? If not, does anyone know why? Can I assume, if I do not see 'licensed from' and it's not from original label it's a public domain re-issue? Are there any laws(other than the 50 year limit) regulating these labels? Could I issue, for example, A Best Of Blue Note 1950-1954 on my own label if I lived or sold it in Europe?

FS: Mosaic Johnny Hodges Sessions 1951-1955
wolff replied to Brad's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I do not know about this. I have the set and the booklet does say RVG mastering. Thing is, there is no vangelder in the dead wax. I notice initials MCR and 8 in the dead wax. Seems odd that vangelder is missing in this one case. -
Charlie Parker 5 LP Set Complete Savoy Studio Sessions $16 Stone mint. Fairly common set from 1978. Acetates transferred by Rudy Van Gelder. Nice, full size booklet. Quiet vinyl and nice transfer job. Seems like their are too many alt takes for my taste(most songs have 4 or 5), but I guess that's why it is called complete. I'll probably be doing a burn of the good takes. Parker and I have one thing in common. He can make an alto squeak, too.

AOTW Aug. 8-14: Billie Holiday, SOLITUDE
wolff replied to ghost of miles's topic in Album Of The Week
Thanks for posting this AOW. I do not have it, but will try to pick it up soon. My Holiday section is growing of late. Others in my sights are Recital(which may have songs from the same session as Solitude) and Lady Sings The Blues as these are currently available in the analog domain. Listening to an excellent Verve 2 LP set from 1955-57 dates as I type. -
Hendrix: Electric Ladyland What a great re-issue from 1997. 2 LP's, gatefold cover with nice booklet. I have most of the re-issues done by his estate (Experience Hendrix L.L.C.) when they finally got control and I'm very glad I got 'em.

Never heard the CD. I'll keep an eye out for that Newborne title.

Is this one jazz? Ry Cooder: Buena Vista Social Club 2LP Classic Records This one is a no brainer if you like the music. Very natural, open, accurate and warm recording. Makes many other recordings sound very, very poorly done. Having an affinity for most things Cuban I enjoy these LP's very much.

I have 13. (Yikes!! Better get another to get off that number) It seems like I have more. To thoroughly listen to my 13, it would take me about a month, maybe two.

This is not much help as I have never done it, but..... Do you want pro results or to just get results good enough to post on-line? I've seen incredable results from both film negs and slide scans. These were done by pros who were expert with the software. Results by amatuers were across the spectrum, from terrible to just ok. I have a feeling it is not so much the scanner but learning the software. One of the Photoshops seems to be the most popular. Some scanners come with good software while others do not. I've looked at film neg scanning/printing quite a bit and decided it would still be cheaper/better to have a lab do it. I can get 8x10 custom prints done for much less than I could do it myself. Also, the learning curve on the software was overwhelming to me.

I still can recall when I first noticed their unique sound. Number one: Hodges...even if you are deaf. Armstrong Hawkins Basie Morgan I like listening to those Verve/Clef ballad medleys. Individual tone/sound is really in stark relief

Have never seen any from Mosaic. I have one from Classic Records (Sonny Stitt Blows The Blues). Generally, if it has no flaws, either from the stamper or the pressing they will sound good, as they come from a fresh stamper.
