Just a few thoughts... One of the things I've come to like about my turntable is setting it up correctly, and getting the most out of it. I've come to know my turntable quite well and have learned many interesting things about this method of playback. Getting it set-up correctly and fine tuning the cartridge allignment can make nice improvements, while not damaging the vinyl.

Any fine print? What was original label?

Soulville Ben Webster Label: Speakers Corner(Import on heavy, dead quiet vinyl) Personnel: Oscar Peterson, piano; Ray Brown, bass; Herb Ellis, guitar; Stan Levey, drums; and Ben Webster, tenor saxophone. Available at Red Trumpet and other vendors. If you need to add some more Webster to your shelf and do not want to find/pay for a mint original, this would be one to look at getting. Has brought me much pleasure. Warm analog sound. I do notice a bit of distortion on the guitar in one or two spots, but that does not stop me from playing this one often.

I wonder if any of our French residents have this one collecting dust? Wilen Brownie?

Bud Powell: Blue Pearl (45 RPM Japanese pressing) I wish it was 30 minutes longer.

Thanks for the heads-up, Dan. BTW that web address does not work.

Red Rodney: 1957 Classic Records re-issue. Available at Acoustic Sounds. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder for Signal. With Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ira Sullivan on tenor sax and second trumpet, Oscar Pettiford's bass, and Philly Joe Jones and Elvin Jones splitting time behind the drums. Star Eyes, You Better Go Now, Stella By Starlight, Red Arrow, Box 2000, Ubas I've had this for a number of years. Doesn't seem to be good seller, as it's still available and has not been re-done on 200 gram vinyl. The music is ok, but nothing special. Seems to lack a coherent drive or groove that I like. Overall, it's a nice, laidback date and the ballads are quite nice. For those into sound, for a recording from 1957, it's super. Clean, with good fidelity. Stereo spread is very left, right and middle. YMMV

Christian said he had never heard of Bob Irwin. If it's the same Bob Irwin I've heard of, they could have done worse. I love the work he's done on the Dylan and Redding catalogs. Sundazed

This needs further discussion, but(I think) the re-issues you see of Columbia, Epic, Time, Atlantic, United Artist and Blue Note, that are currently available at about $10, are done by Rhino/Scorpio. The sound has been noted by some to be poor, and I keep putting off trying some. Let me guess, a bright, thin sound, lacking accurate tones. I did read one post saying one of the Atlantic's sounded good. The Atlantic titles are all that interest me, since I have few and there are many titles available. I do not expect great sound, but am hoping they will be acceptable to my ears. Definitely, look elsewhere for the better, all analog re-issues.

I think I have most of Hill's Blue Notes. I too, like the the inclusion of a sax in his albums. I'm no authority on what's best, but I like Black Fire quite a bit. Andrew!, with John Gilmore is the one I play the most.
-
I'm going to cheat and add a non-jazz reissue. James Brown: Say It Loud-I'm Black And I'm Proud What's there to say.... I mention this as there are about 30 other Brown reissues available at vinyl.com.
-
Interesting, thanks. I wonder if Harry Weinger is resposible for the Brown Polydor catalog being available on vinyl(30 titles). If so, I thank him.

Cadence lists about 20 titles on wax for $8 each, if you did not know.

Since I was playing these I thought I'd mention them. Probably more of a collectors item, but still available at Acoustic Sounds and other titles from the series can be found HERE. New Faces, New Sounds Frank Foster Quintet Blue Note 5043 Howard McGhee, Volume 2 Howard McGhee Blue Note 5024 Toshiba EMI(Japan) 5000 10 inch series. Very quiet vinyl with great packaging. Nice full bodied mono sound that lets the music come through quite nicely for the time period. I think I notice a couple 'drop outs'. Very good tenor and trombone on the Foster, which is a killer LP in my opinion. I love the mix of ballads and bop. As always, YMMV.

The BN double LP's have good to just ok sound, but not the 'classic' BN sound by any stretch. They can be found cheap and in great shape and the vinyl was pretty good. I do not buy them anymore. For whatever reason, I much prefer, to have and to listen to, the Prestige/Riverside/etc. twofers by Fantasy. Some really good mastering engineers did a lot of these--RVG and David Turner for example. YMMV

DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA Featuring Paul Gonsalves (OJC-623) Recorded May 1st 1962 Bought this through Fantasy. Great album if you want to hear a lot of Gonsalves solos. I usually play 2 songs over and over; Caravan and Happy Go Lucky Local. For whatever reason, sound is just ok and it's a mono release.

Another way to do it would be to figure out what title you want first and from there search out what's available and at what price, condition and sound quality. For example, what are the current choices for Brooks: True Blue or Griffin: The Congregation on vinyl.
-
I think I would probably agree with that - although the 'King' GFX pressings are usually very good, often superb, and are well worth seeking out. I would choose the Japanese pressings for availability of titles and condition. It's not that easy to get many titles in nice condition of 35 year old Liberty's. Also, many of the older titles, re-issued by Liberty are rechannelled stereo, something you want to avoid if you are into sound quality.
-
I thought it would be nice to have a thread to post about reissues and originals that you have and are available. Please include where you got them and any other details that may be of interest.
-
Thinking about your situation some more, I would go for Japanese pressings first. They are a quality product. Many can be found new from HERE. They sound good and vinyl is quiet. Then I'd get a Classic or two to see how I like them. Cheaper than the Japanese pressings and the quality is quite good , also.
