  1. How do you compare this pressing with the Mosaic? Interesting question - I'll report back later . In general I find that the 2-eyes have slight edge sonically, although they are noisier than Mosaic. surely the UK Monos will be fold downs of the stereo masters. I have few of these CBS UK Monos such as John Handy's Second Album sound nice but not out of this world - but then I've nothing to compare it to.
  2. why oh why do I read this board, nothing but temptation......I've enough Miles........or do......on second thoughts......... trigger pulled on this one after much fence-sitting. I have some of the material already ( Smiles,ESP, Nefertiti, Sorcerer, Filles...) on CD but some will be totally new to me .....

  4. I noticed a huge leap in performance on changing my Rega Elys for a Denon DL-103R moving coil cartridge (£200). Admittedly I also rewired (Incognito? £140) the RB300 tone-arm on my Rega P3 deck at the same time. I am very pleased and have found all sorts of albums sound better in all sorts of ways, less distortion, better bass , generally clearer. Even rough pressings sound much better and far more listenable than previously. Having said all that prior to the demise of my Elys I was quite content with it......so easily satisfied...
  5. Skipping is annoying but rare for me as most jazz LPs I get have been well treated. More common and more annoying (to me) is distortion either from poor pressing or the LP being mistreated by a former owner. I really hate it when the sound or at least some of the sounds distort. I also don't care for sound wobble-( not sure what this should be called) ,it's where the pitch of notes seem to bend as if the tape has been stretched. Luckily none of these problems is too common.
  6. Just received a copy of "Spring of Two Blue J's" LP. It's taken a long time to really yet into CT but recent acquisitions of "Dark unto themselves " and "Unit Structures " have re-galvanised my interest in him. Those two and this really great album have connected with me. Love it, never a dull moment , real sense of forward motion.

  8. thanks Bev. now spinning Andrea Keller- Thirteen Sketches -Newmarket, good compostions , recommended.
  9. Thanks for starting this thread. Long ago there was great thread on Italian jazz (at AAJ I think, or was it the BNBB?) which along with Kenny Weir's Australian jazz thread became the only reason I visited AAJ. So Kenny get to it. Mean while I can see this thread costing me whole load of cash Oh well....any recent recommendations from the Auand label, had some very nice stuff from them in the past.....
  10. Glad to help out, looking forward to hearing the product of your labours
  11. interesting stuff, I've been listening to quite a bit of Handy, despite his reservations I think his Roulettes are just fine....I prefer the second one thought FWIW.
  12. Interesting LPs, I have Salt Peanuts and their debut LP. The obvious question is Where's Warne. Unlike the "Where's Wally" books there seems no chance to even glimpse his genius!!
  13. Two fantastic releases came my way quite recently ( that is I bought them!) Peter Evans Quartet - Firehouse12 Mostly other people do the killing- Shamokin!!!- Hotcup Records Firehouse 12 Shamokin Freak-out post bop on the latter with stunning trumpet by Evans and equally amazing alto from Jon Irabagon..From its Night In Tunisia hommage cover to liner notes by one Leonardo Featherweight it's raucous fun. The Peter Evans self titled date is freer rhythmically but just as wonderful Post Ornette sax/guitar/bass/drums. Lovely stuff. Don't know any of the participants but I'm quite impressed with the results. Any one else?
  14. thanks but it's a little in advance, now sure how that changed on my profile
  15. My route ( which I tried for the first time a few days ago) is from LP to MD. Then using digi out from the MD straight to HD without any further AD or DA conversion. Worked well enough
  16. I've had no problems with my Lacie 250GB external USB hard drive, in use for over 3 years now
  17. You have me worried, I thought it would be pretty simple, I was looking at getting a D-Link RangeBooster N 650 Router as it appears to be compatible (with Mac os 10.4 at least) and it's powerful, I have pretty thick walls in my home although the distances aren't huge.
  18. I agree with your endorsement of Mac and memory requirement, MA61. As you note, 2GB is better and current memory prices favor upgrading--at least in the US. I have never used Windows' XP, but I hear only horror stories and find that many PC people I know are either switching to Mac or reverting to the older version of Windows. Conrad and MG are among the fortunate, I think, but it may also be that they are not putting XP to the test with demanding applications. Clunky, all new Mac should ship with Leopard. If you are being offered one with Tiger, don't buy it. I have been using Leopard since it was introduced and it is much better than Tiger, good as Tiger was. Learning curve starts here, got a 1G model ( twas all they had , and of course if needs be, I'll upgrade the RAM) Now I need to get a wirless router thingy for my cable broadband........it never stops
  19. thanks for the replies, all very helpful
  20. http://www.edinburghjazzfestival.co.uk/ Great festival with something for everyone.
  21. I'm thinking about getting a MacBook to wirelessly network with my home PC. I'm increasingly fed-up with instability in Windows XP, crashes etc and hope that a Mac might be easier to use ( for my wife , really) and rather less hassle. I would need a program to allow basic editing of audio files (wav, MP3 etc) such as recording, track splitting, etc From what I've read converting to Mac shouldn't be too tough. Any thoughts re what spec of MacBook to go for, is 1G of RAM enough for standard applications.? The biggest files it's likely to need to handle could be 900Mb audio files- would 1 G be ok or a little sluggish.? Also I see some retailers are still selling Tiger OS rather than Leopard OS- does that matter? Thanks in advance
  22. Wow! If for any reason you feel like passing on the Hodges (assuming it's the first one?) and Quebec/Hardee, let me know and I'll give you my address within a second or two! Double wow, now I see what you meat on another thread by your "London" collection. I thought you meant London Atlantics etc.... Excellent haul
  23. Does this answer the question? In this four disc set,Mosaic has gathered all of Pres' solo efforts made with Count Basie in a series of classic recordings from the Columbia family of labels. In addition to all the Basie small group and big band sessions with Pres's solos, ... perhaps it does, if it means incomplete sessions because on certain tracks, Lester is heard only in the ensemble, then that'll be a real pity. I'd really want a complete Basie Coulmbia set. Do we need another incomplete set ? I'd don't know this music well enough to know if this approach would lead to incomplete sessions being issued. It certainly has happened on the Chu set where a fair number of sessions are abbreviated where Chu isn't heard enough to merit inclusion in the set under his name.
  24. There will be presumably a lot of over lap with the Sony 4CD set America's No 1 Band. The post 1940s material and the live airshots presumably won't be on the Mosaic set. Were there Basie sessions of this period (1936-40) that didn't feature Lester ? Or will this be like the Chu set where Mosaic only included tracks where Berry soloed ?
