  1. Picked these two recently for £2 each . The Getz is a very good session and significantly exceeded my expectations ( which were quite low for some reason) Stan Getz and the Clarke-Boland Big Band - CHANGE OF SCENES Sonny Stitt - ONLY THE BLUES
  2. Cecil Taylor The world of... Candid (Jpn) Cannonball Adderley Poll Winners Riverside Johnny Cash Unchained America

    Duke Ellington

Red's on just one track "The New Piano Roll Blues" from Sept 21st 1950. Carney, Jeep, Duke, Wendell Marshall and Max also play
  4. Yesterday I got a 2 LP vinyl copy of Duke Ellington The Ellingtonians Vogue Double VJD 525. It contains some very interesting EKE sessions from 1950/1 , small group material with a more diverse than usual cast including on Max Roach, Oscar Pettiford and Red Rodney along with the more usual Ellingtonians. However interesting the material might be the sound is pretty poor in points. Distortion on louder passages but generally lousy fidelity. I'm not sure what label this came out on originally but has this stuff always sounded this bad?
  5. I missed this until now, but there's little left of interest . My first BN purchase in any format was in 1987 was Cannonball Adderley's , Somethin Else CP32-5205, no reference to Ron McMaster but it's produced by MC. I've always thought it sounded fantastic musically and sonically.

  7. Last night Tim Berne- Paraphrase- Drew Gress and Tom Rainy, two heavy freely improvised sets. Powerful stuff
  8. Art Pepper - Smack Up - Vogue ( mono) , great date , anyone know if this would be a fold-down of the stereo tapes or not.
  9. It's a pity this stuff has been reissued in such a random manner because it's very good.

It was on Prestige 7361 and Stateside 10150, and he did both. According to Bruyninckx the big band parts were recorded July 14, 1964 in Stockholm, the parts of Grachan Moncur and and Cecil Payne were overdubbed in New York during autumn of 1964, as were the Swedish soloist in Stockholm. Never heard that one but wonder how organic it sounds with this triple recording procedure. Oh well I found out too late , ended up getting the Stateside Lp of this (cheap) on ebay before I read all these negative comments about the session. Penguin give it a decent three stars, I'll judge for my self soon enough.

Any comments on Stockholm Sojourn on Prestige ?, not sure if BG plays or was the arranger/composer on that date
  12. Best of luck Garth which ever way you go. Don't sell those Gullin discs you'll only regret it later
  13. Fairly recently I picked very inexpensively Jazz Will O the Wisp- by Al Haig. It's a Freshsound vinyl issue. The sound is very muddy indeed. The piano is muffled but the drums and fairly clear. It's a very nice session if you listen thru the crummy sound. Has this always been the way with this session or have I simply got a nasty ( probably booted) reissue?
  14. For some strange reason "Plenty, Plenty Soul" is a very neglected masterpiece, imo. I have always loved this album, and once even had one of those early weird Atlantic green label stereo versions of this, in which Cannonball sounded as if he was playing in the next room. I assume that this remastered reissue is a mono version of this wonderful album? I also believe that the stereo takes were different from the mono takes ... I assume that these are not included. Great Lucky Thompson on the 'B' side .... On the new issue Cannonball remains in an adjacent room but the sound is otherwise very clear. The drums are perhaps a little loud suggesting a mixing problem. The tracks with LT suffer no problems in terms of balance. I've not heard this session before so can't compare but I've no complaints with this issue of Plenty,Plenty Soul
  15. Garth, all I'm saying is that if there is a CD available of this 'Plenty, Plenty Soul' album with different takes, I would be looking for this. With mono or stereo takes, whatever... the new issue is in stereo and sounds very good to my ears

I got this Solal box a few years ago, it was one of my first ebay purchases. Regrettably three of the four discs have warpage which significant affects play on the first tracks on each side. Despie this is ,it's a decent set but the sound ( even allowing for warp) is not that fantastic, it's certainly good enough though.

    is this still available ?
  19. What LT Mosaic Select?! I mentioned this some time ago. I mailed Mosaic suggesting amongst other things a pre 1950s LT set. The response indicated that they were looking at a LT select of ABC/Decca sessions. No detailsof what it would include but I'd guess the Tricotism sessions would be included for sure.
  20. I love this session for all the same reasons.
  21. If you can wait the Thompson should be part of the LT Mosaic select (not sure how firm plans are for this)
  22. Got weak and ordered Tenor Scene, Mintons and Lookin at Monk. Cheap and nearly OOP I told myself.
