  1. Dizzy Gillespie Live, With Mitchell-Ruff Duo (Book of the Month Club)
  2. Earl Hines Plays Duke Ellington (Book of the Month Club). Preposterously, this four LP set is formatted for stacking and flipping--side 1 backed by side 8, side 2 by side 7, etc. I'm imagining all the Earl Hines fans out there with their compact stereos stacking their records to listen to 4 or 8 sides in a row... On second thought, not a bad idea in the face of such piano magnificence.
  3. George Freeman, 90 Going on Amazing (Blujazz)
  4. That band is great. Thanks to Analog Africa/Soundway/Strut for rescuing their music from obscurity.
  5. Zenith Presents Jazz Set (Columbia)
  6. Best 1970s cut bin score for me: NY USA pressing of Big John Patton, Got A Good Thing Goin'.
  7. American Folk Blues Festival, Manchester Free Trade Hall October 21, 1962 (Rhythm and Blues)
  8. I would love to see Yazz Ahmed.
  9. Yes; I never even heard of Gleam back in the day until I read about it here. It was basically unavailable until Wounded Bird reissued it.
  10. I heard some guy was going to write a book about jazz. It is going to be terrible.
  11. Keep Your Soul Together/High Energy/Gleam-a superb run of consecutive albums.
  12. If true, I must be a half step sharp.
  13. The duo livestream with David Murray from the Village Vanguard a few weeks ago was excellent. I saw him live once backing up David Murray at Winter Jazzfest in NYC a couple of years ago.
  14. His new CD, Now, available from Bandcamp in a double CD edition of only 300, has been dominating my listening the last week or so. It is wonderful--a trio that sounds like a working band and compelling original material. https://lafayettegilchrist-morphius.bandcamp.com/album/now-double-album-2cd-set
  15. TRIO 3: Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman & Andrew Cyrille & Special Guest Vijay Iyer STREAMING LIVE - October 30 at 8PM EDT / 6PM PDT Get tickets
  16. Lafayette Gilchrist, Now
  17. Billie Holiday, The Golden Years, volume 2 (Columbia) A Profile of Gerry Mulligan (Mercury) Zani Diabate and Super Djata Band de Bamako volume 2 (Yellow) (Kindred Spirits)
  18. Well recorded double album with one side to each pianist. All solo piano. Marian McPartland is the producer. Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson sides are superb. There are perhaps too many medleys, if that bothers you. Definitely a feast of fine solo piano.
  19. Herbie Mann and Bobby Jaspar, Flute Flight (Prestige/Status) Earl Hines/Teddy Wilson/Ellis Larkins/Marian McPartland, Jazz Concert in Argentina (Halcyon) Le Tout Puissaint Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo (Strut) Dick Johnson Quartet, Music for Swinging Moderns (Emarcy) Sidi Toure, Toubalbero
  20. Birdland Livestream: This Friday at 7pm, don't miss Ben Allison (bass), Ted Nash (Tenor Sax/Clarinet) & Steve Cardenas (guitar). This cooperative trio is modeled after Jimmy Giuffre’s drummer-less units of the 1950s and 60s.Focusing on compositions by Giuffre and Jim Hall, as well as new spins on classics by Leonard Bernstein, this trio manages a high level performance while maintaining the easy intimacy that has become a hallmark of their sound. A perfect jazz trio for a Friday night. Buy Your Tickets Here! Can't make it this Friday? No worries, this performance will be available on demand for 30 days. Catch this trio and many other wonderful performances ON DEMAND HERE!
  21. True. I do recall going to see Wynton in a club a few times back in those days. The place would be packed, though the music was just okay. The weeks before or after, they would have someone incredible in the same venue to a modest or sparse crowd. Kind of demoralizing.
  22. Kent Jordan is a fine musician, not deserving of mockery. I've seen him live several times in the last few years, leading his own group and mostly with Kidd Jordan. They are a dynamic team.
