  21. "Soul-stirring" Mingus Big Band celebrates the great composer for one night only, March 24 Houston-native pianist Helen Sung in a homecoming performance Saturday, March 24, 8:00 PM Cullen Performance Hall, University of Houston “Decades after his death, the richly-detailed, soul-stirring oeuvre of Charles Mingus still packs a wallop. Thankfully, the beat goes on in the form of the Mingus Big Band.” – National Public Radio The Grammy Award-winning Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of legendary composer/bassist Charles Mingus. This 14-piece band performs weekly in New York, currently at the Jazz Standard. Mingus Big Band tours extensively in the United States and abroad, and has 10 recordings to its credit, winning the Grammy in 2010 for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. Pianist Helen Sung, a Houston native and graduate of HSPVA, has long been associated with the band and visits Houston for a homecoming residency. Brad Mehldau's first Houston appearance! Pianist comes to Houston April 13 with his trio Friday, April 13, 8:00 PM Culen Performance Hall, University of Houston Over the last two decades, pianist Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. Now, he makes his long awaited first appearance on Da Camera’s jazz series with his trio featuring with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. “Universally admired as one of the most adventurous pianists to arrive on the jazz scene in years” — The Los Angeles Times
  22. TAL National, Tantabara (Fat Cat)
  23. One would expect so, given that he sells big band arrangements on his website... http://jimmyheath.com/arrangements.html
  24. I think I will try to attend this, as I have only seen Jimmy Heath live one time long ago (circa 1983 or 1984) with the Heath Brothers. Presumably the program will be Jimmy Heath compositions? A ticket is only $10 if you are willing to accept status as a "senior citizen"--which is absurdly defined as beginning at 55.
  25. Other I.M. Terrell graduates were Charles Moffett Sr., William Prince Lasha, and Ronald Shannon Jackson. I once sat at a table at a concert with Charles Moffett's brother and naively asked him why all the jazz greats from Fort Worth were from the same high school, the answer being that there was only one black high school in Fort Worth at the time.
