  4. Also the composer of Slow Dance on Traning In.
  5. His LP with Brubeck's sons is pretty good. It is direct to disc and has a strong Larry Coryell is in the room with you sound. I recollect when I heard him with Five Guitars Play Mingus, at one point he played a solo that was outrageous--the other four guitarists were standing off to the side of the stage with expressions of awe on their faces.
  6. He is 89, I believe. Is he the last performing Tristanoite?
  7. According to an online review, his "warbly" vocals are on one song. It will be okay. I ordered one too. "“Darn That Dream” features a warbly Konitz vocal"
  8. Depressing news. I recollect seeming him live four times, in very different circumstances. Once in Arlington, Texas, at a bar/club where he played a solo concert on acoustic and electric guitar. It was an impressive performance. Then at the Time Cafe in New York, in a five guitar group playing Mingus compositions. Next playing with a quartet, in the vein of his Muse recordings, at the Blue Note. The last time, at the Granada Theater in Dallas, playing in a trio in the jazz-rock style, but for some reason this evening the music just wasn't working. Unfortunately, no more chances.
  9. For awhile in the mid-1980s, he was the pianist who was part of the unofficial rhythm section at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth--with Walter Booker or Bob Cranshaw on bass and Idris Mohammed on drums--they would back up the likes of, for example, Freddie Hubbard or David Newman at the club--some definite highly fond memories of seeing Larry Willis perform. After a long drought, I saw him last year with Head of State at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and he sounds as good as ever.
  10. Sonny Stitt, Only the Blues (Verve), Mose Allison Sings (Prestige), and Chet Baker Big Band (Pacific Jazz)
  11. Da Camera has announced the schedule for its series of free events at downtown’s Discovery Green park in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month. This year’s series includes master drummer Joel Fulgham’s Big Band, brass party band Red Baraat and the trio of pianist Jason Moran, bass player Chris Walker and drummer Denardo Coleman. The Moran-Walker-Coleman Trio made its debut at the recent DocFest fundraiser at Hobby Center. The concert with Jason Moran is part of Da Camera’s Jason Moran Homecoming Residency. The media sponsor is KTSU 90.9 FM.

I also purchased that Arnie Lawrence LP from a cutout bin in the 1970s, but it was probably circa 1974 or 1975. I still have it.
  16. But of course, most of the CDs in that series are worthy.
  17. Kenny Barron, Golden Lotus (Muse), Lou Donaldson, Back Street (Muse), Stan Getz and Paul Horn, Midem Live '80 (Personal Choice Records), and James Clay, Jazz on the Lake 1986, volume 1 (The Lodge of Granbury Records). The first side of the Getz record is his working group at a live concert in 1980. The second side begins with an unusual Stan Getz/Paul Horn duet--quite beautiful. The James Clay is him playing with a local band, with a slightly commercial bent and several vocal tracks--but still he sounds good and it brought back memories of his late life sound in person, which I surely miss (and didn't take advantage often enough).

  20. I seriously considered a trip to the Big Ears festival last year (and again this year), but have dillied and dallied and through inaction so far talked myself out of it. I would love to hear what it is like.
  21. Yes, as long as that particular ratio is greater than 1/1, I can testify in support of your sanity in a court of law.
  22. Have you been to this festival? If so, any comments? As for Henry Threadgill in Austin, thank you very much Epistrophy Arts!
  23. Your Trane/Kenton ratio should be at least 25/1. Your Trane/Louis Jordan ratio should be at least 15/1. Your Ellington/Kenton ratio should be at least 50/1. These are only suggested ratios; sometimes variances are permitted with the prior consent of the committee on jazz ratios..
  24. Joe Bonner, The Lifesaver (Muse) and Cedar Walton/Hank Mobley, Breakthrough (Muse).
  25. Charles Earland, Infant Eyes (Muse), Charles Earland, Pleasant Afternoon, (Muse), and Sonny Phillips, My Black Flower (Muse)
