  1. And such a quiet pressing!
  2. Last night, at Poor David's Pub, Guitar Shorty appeared, who's now almost 82 years old. The victim of a recent robbery, where his van containing all but one of his guitars and other equipment was stolen, the veteran bluesman is back on the road thanks to a gofundme benefit. The acrobatic feats are long gone, but his guitar craftsmanship remains undiminished. This was one of the best sets I've ever heard from him. Very intense and fortunately before a packed club.
  3. Archie Sheep and Dollar Brand, Duet (Denon)
  4. This album gripped me from the first listen and still does. I love it. I've seen John Handy live a couple of times, but last October at Dizzys he actually closed his set with Spanish Lady. He's over 80 now, but I was amazed at how well and with the level of passion he played. He still was able to play the high notes; by the end of the song he appeared dripping with sweat--it was a thrill to hear live. I have a copy of Jerry Hahn Brotherhood, but haven't listened to it yet.
  5. Dickie Wells in Paris 1937 (Prestige), and Bud Shank Quartet at Cal Tech (Pacific Jazz)
  6. Have a very Happy Birthday!
  7. Duke Pearson, Right Touch (Blue Note/Liberty)
  8. Last night at the packed to the rafters Balcony Club, in an unfortunately rare of late home town appearance, the Lucky Peterson Band. During the lengthy second set which I attended, Lucky stuck to the organ throughout--presenting a loose set more on the soul and funk side than blues, with multiple guest vocalists (Tamara, Sheron Keaton, daughter). Meandering at times, but interspersed with outrageous and super intense funk and soul. A joyous musical experience.
  9. Lou Donaldson, Midnight Creeper (Blue Note/Liberty), and The Clifford Brown All-Stars (Emarcy). On early Emarcy pressings, Clifford Brown is so vividly captured he seems to be there in the room with you.

  11. Fortunately, there are a lot more than ten "ten" greatest jazz groups.
  12. Thanks for all the great recordings, and four live experiences in my case, all wonderful. 1984: At Lush Life in New York City. 1987: New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (The Timeless All Stars) 1987: at Caravan of Dreams, Fort Worth. 1997: At Village Vanguard. The Vanguard date was particularly awesome, as I was sitting in the front row, right by his side by side vibes and marimba.
  13. I recollect seeing her live just one time--she just played a couple of songs in duet with an alto player in a concert featuring multiple artists--her short set was by far the best part of the concert.
  14. Maxine Sellers, Folk Singer (Prestige Folklore), Jack Wilson, Song for my Daughter (Blue Note Liberty), and Johnny Griffin and Eddie Davis, Blues Up and Down (Jazzland)
  15. Columbia and RCA Live Recordings of Louis Armstrong and His All Stars, Disc 4.
  16. I've seen Buddy Guy there twice, Robert Cray and B.B. King. All enjoyable experiences. The worst thing about it is actually that smoking is allowed in the casino.
  17. Sonny Criss, The Beat Goes On (Prestige, promo, from the listening collection of Music City), and Lou Donaldson, Pretty Things (Blue Note)
  18. Johnny Hodges, Triple Play (RCA)
  19. Only one version of Love in Outer Space (acoustic piano and drums).
  20. No, this was a quintet--Dayna Stephens on tenor sax, Maurice Brown trumpet, Johnathan Kreisberg guitar, Jason Faulkner on drums. I didn't find it bizarre--rather smoking hot. There was a rap by Maurice Brown on one song, but the rest of the song and his trumpet playing made up for it. In addition, at one point Lonnie Smith stopped the show, wandered off for a bit, and with the help of the sound man plugged in his cane, and proceeded to play the electric walking cane. I guess that was bizarre but I thought it amusing.
  21. Listening to the first disc of the newly released In Some Far Place, Roma '77, on Strut/Art Yard. It's rather good. Piano (mostly)/keyboards with some drum accompaniment. Pretty well recorded too.
  22. I enjoyed both a lot, but preferred Lonnie Smith. The Lensic is a terrific venue.
