I also heard some very fine non-jazz concerts this year. Vieux Farka Toure (Mali)--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Wobeon Festival, Austin. The Austin performance was unbelievably hot, just a power trio in a small room. Mamadou Diabate (Mali)--Northwest Hills Church, Austin. Truly beautiful. Kinobe (Uganda)--Wobeon Festival, Austin. Gentle and lyrical music from multi-instrumentalist. Xufei Yang (China)--University of Texas at Dallas. Solo Classical guitar and adaptations of Chinese songs. Nishat Khan (indian Classical)--Allen Public Library Debojyoti Bose (Indian Classical)--Allen Public Library Tutu Jones (blues/soul)--The Balcony Club, Dallas. Powerful performance from resident, little known blues master. Guitar Shorty (blues)--Keys Lounge, Fort Worth. No more acrobatics, but guitar mastery remains. Chris Thomas King (blues)--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Kenny Neal (blues)--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Little Freddie King (blues)--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Not much of a singer, but love his guitar groove. Buddy Guy (blues)--Bedford Blues Festival.

I heard lots of great live jazz and other music this year, but I mostly had to work for it (travel). These all made highly favorable impressions: Charles Lloyd Quartet--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Last 2 songs, about 45 minutes or so of the concert, were mesmerizing. Kenny Garrett Quintet--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. That was one intense set. By the end, most of the Jazz Tent crowd was actually dancing in the aisles. Amazing. Cassandra Wilson--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. A fine band including Charlie Burnham, Lonnie Plaxico and Kevin Breit, songs from the Billie Holiday repertoire and one terrific original to close (Last Song). Randy Weston and His African Rhythms--Trinity University, San Antonio. He may be 89, but he has not slowed down. Great group including Billy Harper, Alex Blake and T.K. Blue. Amina Claudine Myers Trio--Winter Jazzfest. With Jerome Harris on guitar. Donald Harrison with Lonnie Smith--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. It was a jam session set, led by Donald Harrison, but when they started setting up the B3 I knew it would be more than that. Rudresh Mahanthappa Bird Calls--Winter Jazziest. Marcus Miller--Granada Theater, Dallas. Mike Stern Trio (Francois Moutin and Kim Thompson)--55 Bar, New York. One of the best performances I've heard at the 55 Bar. David Murray/Geri Allen/Terri Lynn Carrington--Winter Jazziest. Trio 3 (Oliver Lake, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman) with Vijay Iyer--Winter Jazziest. Kent Jordan--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Interesting sounding group with flute, clarinet and tenor sax (Calvin Johnson) front line. John Handy--Dizzys, New York. It was a true thrill to hear Spanish Lady live, and strongly performed. George Lewis--Community Church, New York. A compelling percussion work, with Thurman Barker, Tyshawn Sorey, and Eli Fountain. Charles McPherson Quintet--Jazz Standard. Also still sounding great. Nels Cline and Julian Lage--Kessler Theater, Dallas. Guitar duet. Calvin Johnson Quintet--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Impressive young New Orleans tenor saxophonist. Terence Blanchard E Collective--New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Leni Stern--55 Bar. Jazz/African music fusion. Petros Klampanis with Gilad Hekselman--Cornelia Street Cafe, New York.

His best record in my opinion is Live in Chicago, which is so intense he practically sets the whole city ablaze. Other good ones are: Serious, Reckless, and Songs from the Road.

The music was great last year. The first day, I saw David Murray's Clarinet Summit, followed by David Murray Trio with Geri Allen, followed by Trio 3 (Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille) with Vijay Iyer, followed by Mark Ribot's Young Philadelphians (with Jamaladeen Tacuma and Mary Halverson). The next night included Amina Claudine Myers Trio (on organ with Jerome Harris on guitar), followed by the Cookers (including Billy Harper, Donald Harrison, Eddie Henderson, Cecil McBee, George Cables), followed by Rudresh Mahanthappa's Bird Calls. On the ECM part of this year's festival, I'm hoping they add some European ECM artists to the bill (Terje Rypdal please). -

Just because I was planning on going this year. Last year I went for the first time and it was really fun, despite being incredibly cold in New York. In terms of making a visit to the city, airline tickets/hotels are at their low point that time of year. -
