  1. Herb Ellis Meets Jimmy Giuffre (Verve stereo) [originally purchased in 1964 for $2.40, the prior owner included his name and social security number in writing on the LP], and Herb Ellis, Thank You, Charlie Christian (Verve mono).
  2. I noticed that there's a new Matana Roberts release, Always, that just came out. This one features solo alto sax. http://www.amazon.com/Matana-Roberts-x200E-Always/dp/B00X8T5K14/ref=sr_1_5?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1434211645&sr=1-5&keywords=matana+Roberts
  3. The Genius of Art Tatum No. 7 (Clef)
  4. Shoot, I missed hearing about that one.
  5. I'd really like to hear him in person as a leader--all my experiences have been excellent but always as a sideman.
  6. What terrible news, the loss of an all-time great.
  7. I rather like The Magic of Love; the other CD, Africano, is less strong (but still pretty good). I've never seen any evidence of the recordings/video at the Caravan being released in any form. I noticed that the trumpet playing brother, Mondre, still performs (or at least has a website). A brief search didn't find any current information about the saxophonist brother (whose playing I very much enjoyed). The little documented Fort Worth saxophonist Rachella Parks usually joined the band by the end of the evening, to strong effect.
  8. They are one of my favorite bands I heard live at the Caravan of Dreams several times, including one set where Ornette Coleman sat in with them. I recollect that set was filmed (not sure if they were recording as well). At least one of the Moffett Family Band weekends at the club was recorded. I haven't heard the release you mention, but there are two others on a Japanese label--Magic of Love and Africano.
  9. That Spanier material on EmArcy is very good; I have a 12-inch LP with much of it. Yes, I enjoyed it quite a bit--quite good sound. It's hard to find ten inch LPs in decent shape, but both of these are mostly damage free.
  10. I should have noted, it says on the back, this reissue produced by and liner notes by Bill Grauer, Jr. and Orin Keepnews. Jacket has sticker from A. Harris & Co. Record Shop, and a handwritten price, $3.85.
  11. Surprising to me that RCA released a 10 inch LP of Benny Moten's music. There apparently are three volumes. This one is material recorded in 1926-27. The sound is very good. The label is "X" "A Product of Radio Corporation of America."
  12. Benny Moten, Kansas City Jazz volume 1 (RCA ten inch), and Muggsy Spanier and His Dixieland Band (Emarcy ten inch).

  14. Okay; it was just an idle thought.
  15. This Is Duke Ellington and His Orchestra (RCA ten inch, 1940 recordings), Gerry Mulligan-Paul Desmond Quartet (Verve, trumpet label), and Bud Freeman, Jazz: Chicago Style (Columbia ten inch).
  16. The Art Tatum-Ben Webster Quartet (Verve).
  17. So why not go see her? She's never going to play in Dallas. There's lots of competition among airlines at present on flights between New York and Dallas--Southwest flies direct to Laguardia from Love, and of course American from DFW. Right now you could get a Southwest flight in August for about $300 per person.
  18. I ordered it awhile back but just today finally received notice of shipment.
  19. I'll be out of town that day, but good luck.
  20. Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond, Two of a Mind (RCA Living Stereo), and Ralph Sutton Plays Music of Fats Waller (Columbia ten inch).
  21. I saw him live once, in 2005--paired with Roy Hargrove for a two trumpet front line, at the Jazz Gallery. Rather good, I recall.
  22. Ike Quebec, Heavy Soul (Blue Note, NY USA stereo), and Art Blakey, Child's Dance (Prestige/Fantasy).
  23. Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins (Impulse) and Music of Richard Rodgers Played by America's Greatest Jazzmen (Moodsville 35).
  24. Yes, mine has the same issue.
  25. Next year, the Musical Bridges International Music Festival in San Antonio will feature the Charles Lloyd Quartet (February 12, 2016).
