  1. I can see tipping a club employee who actually sells the CDs, but otherwise this seems like a nickel and dime abuse of artists.
  2. Ruddresh Mahanthappa did show up for his concert in Plano. I was really not sure what to expect. It turned out to be a good concert. First part was Rudresh fronting a big band (including faculty members of Collin College and UNT graduates)--playing a mixture of arrangements of his own material and a few songs composed and/or arranged by band members. Then there was a small group portion of the concert, with Rudresh playing material from Bird Calls with the rhythm section of the big band. Finally, the big band returned to play Chillin' from Bird Calls. So it was an actual interesting musical event, especially to hear large group arrangement/performances of Mr. Mahanthappa's music, and his features with the small group.
  3. Placed a contribution in the mail today.

  8. I hope so--his website has corrected the conflicting concert listing, which is a few days prior.
  9. By the way, I inquired about the Rudresh Mahanthappa concert at Collin College and received the reply that the concert was at 7:30, was open to the public and there is no admission charge.

  14. Sunday in Tulsa, Oklahoma: David Amram in Concert: A Tribute to Oscar Pettiford 5:00 p.m. Multi-instrumentalist and world-renowned composer David Amramtakes the Jazz Depot stage with a tribute concert honoring his fellow Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame inductee: the late, great Oscar Pettiford. Jazz Hall inductee David Amram has composed more than one hundred orchestral and chamber music workds, while penning many scores for both Broadway and film. He is widely known for his classic scores for the films, “Splendor in the Grass” and “Manchurian Candidate,” as well as the score for the landmark 1959 documentary, “Pull My Daisy” and two operas. Amram is also the author of three books. An inventively funny improvisational lyricist, Amram is a pioneer player of jazz French horn, a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from twenty-five countries. While traveling the world as a conductor, soloist, bandleader, visiting scholar, and narrator in five languages, Amram continues to compose.

    Robert Johnson

Monday night I was in San Antonio on a work trip and stayed at the Gunter Hotel, which after I arrived I realized was the location of Robert Johnson's San Antonio recording sessions. The small display in the lobby was clearly created by an Eric Clapton fan interested in Robert Johnson solely for that reason.
