I came across new copies of this set today in a Half Price Books store for $40. It's probably not the only store to have them, if anyone is in the market and has HPBs in their area.
-
I watched an internet broadcast of one of her concerts from Joe's Pub; I thought she was good.
-
Mosaic is having a sale on the LP sets through the end of February--$10 off.
-
I think it's deliberately useless--they must think that if the results are overinclusive you will sample some of the supposedly simillar artists and buy their CDs as well. I find it results in my not necessarily finding what I'm actually looking for.
-
Yes, the set includes "My Favorite Quintet," plus additional unreleased material from the same concert--a 40 minute LP expanded to 90 minutes.

I didn't. How?

I saw him a few times--once in a small theater in New York in a group with Zane Massey similar to his two hard boppish Delmark releases, another time at the Knitting Factory, with a quartet he called Shades of Trane, which played all Coltrane compositions, and in a quartet with Lee Rozie, William Parker and Hamid Drake--these were all very enjoyable performances; I'm sorry to hear this news.

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
kh1958 replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It seems like their sets are disappearing at alot faster rate than they are being created. -

Thanks. I got tickets for both. I ordered tickets to the Wayne Shorter concert--by hook or by crook I will make it to Houston that Friday. -
Her second leader date is really good; you will enjoy it. Here are two more fine recordings where she is a sideman: Ian Underwood, Help I Lost My Body, and Simona Premazzi, The Lucid Dreamer (Inner Circle). She's only on a few tracks on The Lucid Dreamer (which also features Greg Osby). The Ian Underwood recording (a bass player, not the ex-Mothers sideman) is really excellent and was one of my most frequently listened to recordings acquired during 2013. The tenor sax playing on this one is sublime. Its available from cdbaby.com

Mingus "Complete Debut Recordings" set
kh1958 replied to Shrdlu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'd recommend starting with the 1956-57 material on Atlantic, RCA and Bethleham--Pithecanthropus Erectus, The Clown, Tonight at Noon, East Coasting, A Modern Jazz Symposium of Poetry and Music, and Tijuana Moods. -
Mingus "Complete Debut Recordings" set
kh1958 replied to Shrdlu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've never seen that issue, but the box says leader sessions, so it is presumably the portion of the Mingus Debut set where Mingus was the leader of the session. The big debut box also includes sideman Mingus sessions on Debut. -
It seems marginal for a longtime fan; the price will have to drop pretty low.

An interesting interview of the late bassist. Unfortunately, the targets of some of his more acerbic comments are not identified. http://jazztruth.blogspot.com/2011/05/dwayne-burno-interview-part-1.html

One O'CLock Lab Band with Billy Harper and the Cookers The One O’Clock Lab Band welcomes back one of its own on February 6, 2014 when tenor sax phenom Billy Harper returns as the Glenn E. Gomez Endowment guest artist for 2014. Now known as “one of the last great tough-toned tenors from Texas” (JazzTimes), Harper made history in the 1960s as the first African-American member of the One O’Clock Lab Band, and went on to work with jazz greats like Max Roach, Donald Byrd and Gil Evans. The first half of the concert will feature Harper playing with his current project, jazz supergroup The Cookers. Then they’ll all join the One O’Clock Lab Band for a set featuring original charts by Billy Harper himself. Tickets are $15/$10. One O'Clock Lab Band: Glenn E. Gomez Endowment Concert Room: Winspear Performance Hall Building: Murchison Performing Arts Center When: 2-6-2014 @ 8:00 PM One O'Clock Lab Band, Steve Wiest, director with Guest Artist Billy Harper, tenor saxophone and The Cookers David Weiss, trumpet George Cables, piano Cecil McBee, bass Billy Hart, drumset -

How terrible. I heard him earlier this year with Mike DiRubbo; he was a very fine bass player.
