  1. I enjoyed that; thanks.
  2. Laserlight is a cheap budget label with (mostly) poor product.
  3. Roland Kirk, Rip, Rig and Panic (Limelight/Mosaic)
  4. You mean I might drive three hours only to hear the Dave Burrell version of Silent Night and Jingle Bells? It might still be good, and as long as he plays some Jelly Roll Morton...

  6. But doesn't Moran fancy himself something of an avant musicians? - Rivers, Braxton, Taylor, Threadgill, Oliver Lake, et al? He certainly seems to like getting into their performances. Sorry you don't enjoy these types of performances, but I can understand that, since sitting through straight-ahead stuff depresses me. To each his own, and no argument there. As for the Board, I more than suspect the advantage is towards the mainstream, although I think the tilt has not been as great as formerly. I think he models himself on Jaki Byard, a mostly inside-modestly outside type of musician schooled in the mainstream tradition. I've seen some pretty depressing avant garde jazz performances--almost no audience, the venue a dump, the performance grating and unoriginal. But I have seen everyone you mention live, and would do so again with the opportunity.
  7. Superior or not, I have no idea, but I certainly prefer listening to Jason Moran's music over Anthony Braxton or Cecil Taylor. And my live music experiences with Moran were far more enjoyable to me than my live music experiences with Braxton or Cecil Taylor. At the Fats Waller concert, his enthusiasm seemed genuine. The level of negativity on this board towards any current non-avante garde artist is sometimes dismaying.
  8. Last night, Eldar Djangirov Trio at the Campus Theater in Denton.
  9. The internet answers all questions: The Count Basie Orchestra Personnel Current members include musicians hired by Basie himself: Carmen Bradford (1983), Clarence Banks (1984), as well as Mike Williams (1987), Doug Miller (1989), and members who have joined in the last 15 years: David Keim, Alvin Walker, Will Matthews, Marshall McDonald, Doug Lawrence, Cleave Guyton, and our newest members: Mark Williams, Bruce Harris, Jay Brandford, Bobby Floyd and Marcus McLaurine. They do get around, it appears. http://www.thecountbasieorchestra.com/ The only one I've ever heard of is trumpeter Bruce Harris.

  11. No idea, but shouldn't they be the "Count Basie" Orchestra?
  12. Live jazz that could be seen and heard this week: Wednesday night at 7:30, Eldar Djangirov Trio on the University of North Texas campus in Denton, The Campus Theater. Sunday night, Greg Abate at the Jazz Depot in Tulsa, Oklahoma (5 p.m.). Not a chance I'm driving toTulsa on Sunday, but the Eldar Trio in Denton is a possibility to consider.
  13. I guess they really don't like the cold. Well, maybe next year they'll do another summer tour. Either that or they really like the American version of Mexican food!

  15. It was fantastic--a spirit lifting concert. The Winspear Opera House is a beautiful facility. This being Dallas, it was not sold out (maybe about 60% full); but most of the crowd was standing for the entire two hour concert, with the front of the hall being jammed with people. It was not the usual opera house crowd behavior, I don't think. There were two guitarists, bass guitar, four drummer/percussionists, two keyboard players, one saxophonist, and two backup singers along with Youssou N'Dour, whose voice was awesome. I picked up a couple of CDs of the group; Bercy 2013 is excellent and was representative of the sound of the concert. Shockingly, there are actually two more opportunities to see live African music in the following months--Tinarewen will be playing at the Granada Theater in November, and Rokia Traore will be in San Antonio early next year.
  16. Roland Kirk, Now Please Don't You Cry Beautiful Edith (Mosaic), and James P. Johnson, Father of the Stride Piano (Columbia six eyes)
  17. A few would be, McCoy Tyner, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise (Coltrane at the Village Vanguard); Bill Evans, On Green Dolphin Street (Miles Davis, Jazz Track), Lennie Tristano, Turkish Mambo, Bud Powell, A Night in Tunisia (Jazz at Massey Hall), Art Tatum, In a Sentimental Mood (Verve/Pablo), Hampton Hawes, High in the Sky (High in the Sky), Jaki Byard, Fables of Faubus (Great Concert of Charles Mingus) Duke Ellington, Sunset and the Mockingbird (Queen's Suite).
  18. J.J. Johnson, Blue Trombone (Columbia, six eyes mono)
  19. Tonight sure was a treat--Youssou N'Dour live at the Winspear Opera House here in Dallas. Wonderful in every way.
  20. Surely the Modern Jazz on Dial is material other than the Bird sides? A James P. Johnson set would be great. A Bud Freeman set would be great, but I'm doubtful that I need more Eddie Condon in this lifetime.
  21. The Revenge release is the April 17 concert; The "Great Concert..." is the April 19 concert, except it includes Goodbye Eric from April 17. 24. Those are what I have (Red Baron). They sound good, as do the prior LP issues. Thanks! I'll see if I can get them for okay prices - seems offers online are a mess (confusing Vols 1 and 2 and the Collectables and those Sony/Red Baron ones). But I'll have to try, at least, since I really want to hear those! Only have some copies of LaserLight releases. There's also a 2CD set "The Great Chicago Concerts", with Django sitting in .... this set is out again on Nimbus, but with Nimbus you might get CD-Rs, so I don't feel like ordering ... You won't believe how great this "All Star Road Band" live recording sounds, particularly volume 1; recorded by Jack Towers.
  25. Nice ! Greedily, I now have this one in both stereo and mono.
