AfroHORN hits Dallas! 4/24/2014 South Dallas Cultural Center New York based avant garde jazz group AfroHORN will end its week long NPN residency at South Dallas Cultural Center with a FREE concert at the Latino Cultural Center. Led by percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett, AfroHORN boasts an outstanding lineup of musicians including Sam Newsome on soprano saxophone, Alex Harding on Baritone saxophone, Aruán Ortiz on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Roman Diaz accompanying Mora Catlett on percussion. AfroHORN's newest CD, RARE METAL is garnering excellent reviews. iRockJazz says ''With the production of Rare Metal, Mora has managed to create some of the most inventive and wildly original music to be played and heard since the first progressive rumbles of the early â??60s. This release should be considered one of this yearâ??s best releases and Moraâ??s apotheosis as a master musician.'' This performance is supported in part by South Dallas Cultural Center, National Performance Network, Latino Cultural Center and Richland College.

55 Bar address is 55 Christopher Street in Greenwhich Village, just off of Seventh Avenue and near to the Village Vanguard and Smalls and the now closed Sweet Basil. The 55 Grand Street address is in Soho and is a Mexican restaurant, Papatzul.

I'm not sure; both he and his wife play there alot. I like the place and hope it stays open. Per posts on twitter last evening, Kim Thompson posted she was appearing there with Mike Stern on Monday night, and Leni Stern posted she was appearing there on Tuesday night.

Me too; they are great, fast and reliable.

DeCamera tweeted this morning that only 50 tickets remained to the Wayne Shorter concert on April 4.

Not according to Stern's website. From past experience, I believe he does not show his 55 Bar appearances on his website.

Their website indicates they are open--Mike Stern is there tonight.

There is some jazz at SXSW at the Elephant Room--I could only identify Stanley Jordan and Peggy Stern.

Last night featured a pair of piano trios--I caught a set by the Uri Caine Trio, followed by a really dynamic set by the Jean Michel Pilc trio, featuring Richard Bona on bass guitar. Tonight's early set is the Spike Wilner quartet, with Melissa Aldana on tenor sax.

It's actually not quite the complete concert, as it does not include the opening performance of Wayne Shorter's Deluge, or the drum solo encore.

Ronald Shannon Jackson's final concert, at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff, in is now available for download on iTunes.

I ordered a copy from importcds through amazon; I can't wait to hear it.

I've never heard Gil's orchestral music live, but I can relate in the sense that the two times I heard his Monday Night Orchestra at Sweet Basil (and I don't even like that band anywhere near as much as the orchestral works) and Gil wasn't even alive any more (and George Adams was not present), that was still a powerful experience--it still felt like he was there.

I will probably become a member this year. You also get let into the concert hall first as a member. (The concerts I've attended are no where near being sold out though.)
