    Gene Shaw

Dusty Groove issued Breakthrough. There was a Japanese CD issue of Carnival Sketches. Debut in Blues has not been issued on CD.
  2. There's also a Fantasy reissue of My Favorite Quintet on a single LP. Here's one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHARLES-MINGUS-My-Favorite-Quintet-LP-JWS-5-fantasy-Records-/230759214639?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item35ba522e2f#ht_324wt_117
  3. That's terrible news. I heard him live about a year and a half ago at Jazz Standard in an Alvin Queen led group--he still sounded great. And back around 1985 or so he played at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth with David Newman (plus guitar and drums) for a weekend engagement. I was there two nights in a row. Probably the most inspired I ever heard David Newman play, that group was really good.
  4. I would have voted for a 60 CD set, but only 6 were offered.
  5. Billy Taylor Trio, volume 2 (Prestige, W. 50th) Duke Ellington Showcase (Capitol)

    Dave Holland

He regularly posts on twitter and in fact is currently in the UK for a weeklong residency at Birmingham Conservatoire.
  7. Another pre-order placed; I just found a copy of this on LP last fall, a rather terrific recording.
  8. Art Blakey, Indestructible (Blue Note, Liberty blue and white) Don't drop it!

  10. I sent an email expressing my point of view to the contact email address on the mingusmingusmingus.com website: jazzworkshop@mingusmingusmingus.com

  12. I voted for the 6 CD set.
  13. I can't locate the CD to listen myself, but I guess my ears aren't what they used to be, and/or computer speakers are a poor substitute for a real stereo.
  14. I have six of the volumes on Masters of Jazz. Volume 1 (1937-39)--I don't think any of this volume is rare. Volume 3 (1943): There's just one track of Lester with Basie, an AFRS G.I. Jive Transcription. Volume 4 (1944): No live material. Volume 5 (1944): No live material. Volume 6 (1944): This volume has some broadcasts, Basie from the Lincoln Hotel (one track), the Jammin' the Blues soundtrack, broadcast with Hot Lips Page and Charlie Barnett (1940)j, and Lee and Lester Young broadcast (1942). Volume 7 (1945-46): Only live material is a JATP recording.
  15. Last night, Lucky Peterson at Tucker's Blues. A very extended set (2 hours and 30 minutes). Some incredible guitar playing tonight, and lots of piano. Plus a new drummer in the trio. And as a bonus, Lucky was selling a recording of a set of the group performing at the Iridium, from whence they had just returned.
  16. A few of them are available from amazon sellers at elevated prices.
  17. Happy Birthday!
  18. Paolo Vinaccia with Terje Rypdal--Very Much Alive Eithiopiques volumes 8 and 13 Joyce--Rio De Janeiro Elis Regina==Um Dia (Montreux Jazz Festival 1979)
  19. Shouldn't those covers say, "Not Digitally Remastered...", or "Digitally Remastered by someone we did not hire or pay..."?
  20. Duke Ellington--Latin American Suite (Fantasy promo)
  21. Duke Ellington --Eastbourne Performance (RCA)
  22. They actually were touring last fall, and I (and my son) got to them in Chicago. Very nice concert in a terrific location (South Shore Cultural Center). Thank you for this recommendation.
  23. April 13-14: Mike Stern Trio at Dan's Silverleaf, Denton.
  24. I recently acquired this set on CD (I've had the LPs since the '70s). I've only listened on computer speakers, but it sounds good, not a needle drop. I really enjoyed listening to the jam sessions again, actually. It's 3 discs in a single digipack, available pretty cheap from amazon sellers (about $23).
  25. Gene Ammons--Twistin' the Jug (Prestige Black and silver N.J. stereo). This looked a bit battered but was only $9 and cleaned up nicely, the result being amazingly vivid sound.
