  1. In 1993, I saw the Thomas Chapin trio (Michael Sarin and Mario Pavone) at the Pitt Gallery in Vancouver. That was just an incredible performance, one of the most exciting I've ever heard. Then in late 1994, I saw him with a different group, Two Bass Hit, at the Alterknit Theater in the Knitting Factory. This group had Reggie Nicholson, Pavone and another bassist. And I got to see the trio one final time in the main space at the Knitting Factory, before a packed, standing crowd, April 5, 1997. Chapin was ill at this point, but still managed to reach some astounding peaks during the concert.
  2. Archie Shepp--Four For Trane (Impulse, red and black)
  3. Yesterday, I finally received an email notifying me of shipment of my order placed two weeks or so ago.
  4. A US label very active in the 70s. Certainly 'legit' - they did quite a few domestic issues of the East Wind material. I've got a couple of Art Farmers on this imprint (and the sonics are suprisingly good..) Inner City also released Steeplechase titles in the U.S.
  5. Robert Glasper Experiment--March 2 at Kessler Theater.
  6. Milt Jackson--Born Free (Limelight) Shelly Manne--Swinging Sounds, vol. 4 (Contemporary)
  7. Yes, please send the Blue Note (the worst major New York jazz club) to Dallas.
  8. The Goldmine Guide says that trident on the right is 1964-67, trident on the top is 1967-69, and purple label is 1969-72.
  9. I think the purple label was used at the very end, just before the sale to Fantasy.
  10. I've come to like Smalls a lot in recent years. It is in fact much more friendly and welcoming than the Village Vanguard. The sound is good, if not as good as at the Vanguard. It's certainly a lot better deal--if you want to hear two or three groups.
  11. That's been a symptom of a lot of NJ LPs that I've had. Some worse than others. New Jazz was a budget label for Prestige (the price was $1 or $2 less than regular Prestige). I have not found this problem to be common with main label Prestiges.
  12. two interesting quotes about that record: "Damn, that's a real bebop rhythm section" - Roscoe Mitchell "Oh yeah, you got the real tapes" - Eli Thompson Any chance of a CD reissue?
  13. Gabor Szabo--Gypsy '66 (Impulse, orange and black)
  14. Sonny Rollins--Brass/Trio (Verve)
  15. John Handy--Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival (Columbia, two eyes)
  16. Clare Fischer Orchestra--Extension (Pacific Jazz)
  17. The notion of being kept by Marian McPartland makes me feel funny inside, and not necessarily in a good way... BTW - who is/was Sherman Fairchild? http://www.hankonealphoto.com/blog/2010/06/05/83-sherman-m-fairchild.html
  18. In 2010 at Jazz Standard I saw Spencer/Sparks/Alvin Queen, which was a pretty nice rhythm section.
  19. I should probably know -- but were Byard, Davis and Dawson (all three) on any other (non-Ervin) dates together? They are on the Jaki Byard Experience LP along with Roland Kirk Another one is Eric Kloss, In the Land of the Giants.
  20. Johnny Hammond Smith--What's Goin' On (Prestige/Fantasy)
  21. Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Johnny Griffin, Live at Minton's, The First Set (Prestige, yellow and black NJ)
  22. Once I saw that group as a quartet (Tyner, Bartz, Lee, Fletcher) without John Blake at a short-lived jazz club in Oak Cliff called the Judge's Chambers--they played a version of Contemplation that was sublime. Was he in ill health at the time? He certainly didn't suck any of the times I saw him. The last time was around 1998 at the Village Vanguard--sitting in the front row, with his vibes and marimba directly in front of me, that was amazing. The first time was at Lush Life in the early 1980s--the club was almost empty and I got to talk with him awhile; he was very friendly. Also at the Caravan of Dreams circa mid-1980s, and then as well with the Timeless All Stars at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. All were good.
  23. Shirley Scott---Queen of the Organ (Impulse stereo, red and black) Riverside Dixieland Sampler
  24. Happy birthday!
  25. I saw the McCoy Tyner group with John Blake on violin, Gary Bartz on alto, John Lee or (on one occasion) Gerald Veasley on bass guitar, and Wilby Fletcher on drums on a number of occasions. McCoy was coming through Dallas/Fort Worth a couple of times a year during the early to late 1980s, playing at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth and the Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. The quintet was quite electrifying; in fact I recall the appearance with Veasley on bass at the Caravan as a highlight of my concert going experiences. The group only recorded one LP, Dimensions. It is good but does not quite match what I heard live.
