  1. I remember a place there called (IIRC) the Truckee River Bar and Grill- they used to have live jazz. That was a while back, though and it most likely has changed. I don't think there's much of a scene there.
  2. I didn't find an existing thread on this, so I thought I'd start one. Forgive me if this is old news. I was just curious if anyone here is planning on attending. Anyone performing or doing clinics? I'm going (participating in a performance) and would love to hook up with any Organissimites who might be there, esp. since I don't seem to get out to CA all that often.
  3. I think Artie got pretty tired of it too! B-)
  4. Sorry Sal, didn't know there was a thread already.
  5. Regarding "Miles", one of his first acts in the film is to steal money from his mother, an act that he never "undoes". I don't think it was intended for us to give him a lot of sympathy.
  6. Yes, that was funny. My wife and I both like merlot, too- we didn't realize it was an "uncool" wine! Oh well. This film made me want to become more of a wine connoisseur.
  7. Saw this today and enjoyed it immensely. I thought it was well-written and well-acted, a nice diversion from the usual holiday big-budget disappointments which tend to be all flash w/little substance. And it was funny and engaging- I didn't look at my watch once! Anyone else have comments on this film?
  8. Does this count? Check it out here. Pretty funny stuff.
  9. iFyuo cant' beatemjoi nem nem nem, igu esS. Edited for spelling
  10. I think the spirit and intent of your gesture was certainly honorable. The fact that this thread has gone places you didn't want it to is something you can't control. Don't let that discourage you from speaking your mind.
  11. I'm assuming 'cause it's sitting next to the turntable on the cover photo. EDIT: Catesta beat me, but my English is better. "in fron the the"?
  12. And apparently quite verbose.
  13. Here's hoping everyone has a safe, enjoyable and reasonably stress-free holiday and a great new year.
  14. I say we take 'em out back and beat the shit out of 'em.
  15. Drive-by boning, perhaps. Or maybe bonicide?
  16. Congrats BW. Let us know how you like the gig.
  17. The Cooker. I think The Cooker and Candy ("Since I Fell for You" is so perfect!) might be my favorite 50s Lee, maybe my favorite of all Lee. He refined and matured on the later sides, but the energy and swing on those early sides are really inspiring, meaning I always feel like playing after listening to either of those. EDIT: I couldn't choose between Freddie and Lee. I love 'em both.
  18. I don't know what your tastes are, but...... 27th Man has some nice tunes (like Gregory is Here and Summer in Central Park) and is a enjoyable recording overall, but I wouldn't consider it as essential as some other Silver (I'm still waiting for the Silver and... series). I would, however, recommend 27th Man over the recent Silver 2fer reissue The United States of Mind. The Prisoner is essential, however. It ranks among Herbie's top Blue Notes, IMHO. It represents a high level of artistic vision (compositions and arrangements) whereas the Silver is a little more "routine" in terms of the head-solos-head format, but the latter does feature some tasty playing by the Breckers. It's really not even fair to compare the two, they're really apples and oranges. But if you need to pick, I'd say go with the Hancock. But don't totally write off the Silver. Check out samples at AMG or wherever and decide for yourself.
  19. Hey! Another Sangrey quote!
  20. That's OK, I had to look up the spelling myself. Wow, my "board roots" aren't deep enough to know this. I stand corrected.
  21. "Hell yeah!" - Jim Sangrey Coincidence? Perhaps.
  22. Those were the blowing changes- the head is a different animal. As with many Joe tunes, the head is often based on its own set of changes which are frequently simplified (or altered in some way-harmonically or formally) for the blowing section. Sounds to me (and I'm basing this on the "Kicker" version) that during the head the rhythm section is comping a regular blues, but they aren't doing the descending whole-step turnaround over the last four bars, just what sounds to me like an Ebsus13-type of chord. The horn voicings create some very interesting dissonances, however (like in bars 7-8).
  23. It's a regular all-dominant-chord blues in Ab except for the turnaround (last four bars) which consists of (one bar each) Eb7 - Db7 - B7 - A7. EDIT: This progression is from "THe Kicker". The "Unity" version is a straight blues.
