The trumpet player is Howard Magee. That's a great video- JJ is playing his ass off.
Was what I said the actually case? Was Sonny really pissed off at that guy Howard?
Something's going on, I'm not sure what. It definitely seems that Stitt doesn't think much of Magee's antics.
When I was on the road during the 80s the band would frequently go to NY (we stayed at the Paramount on 46th/B'way- that place is a LOT different now!). We would always go to the Village and hit as many places as time and cash permitted.
Heard Mel Lewis and the band at the VV many times, but my favorite memory is hearing Joe Henderson w/Ron Carter and Al Foster. This was right around the "State of the Tenor" era. Got there early, sat right up front. It was so happening we came back the next night. Joe at the peak of his powers.
Here is a link to the Aebersold site. They have all sorts of stuff you'd probably be interested in. There are a lot of play-alongs (over 100 volumes) to choose from. Depending on where you're at musically, I personally think the Charlie Parker play-along is one everyone should get. There are also volumes with blues in all keys and rhythm changes in all keys. All levels of musicianship are accomodated.
If you are unable to order online I would expect you can go to your local music store and they can order stuff for you.
EDIT: what CA said, I just provided you a link to that place.
Save your paper route money and get this....
BTW, I noticed that over at AAJ they seem to think the title is "Waiting on the Boogaloo Sisters". Has that been discussed? WTF?
