  2. The reason you buy this should be to hear a great band with great soloists, period. IMHO the existence of the vocals, whether you like 'em or not, shouldn't be the determining factor. Edit: BTW, I don't think Woody's vocals came out of any egotistical conceit. I think he was trying to simply add some commercial appeal, knowing that audiences want to hear lyrics. I'm sure he felt this provided a contrast to the band's various instrumental excursions.

    chris botti

Chris Botti can play, there's no question about that. It's just disappointing he's wasting his talent on smooth BS. IMHO.
  4. Sadly, JJ Johnson took his own life (he shot himself). From what I understand he was in extreme pain and with no recovery potential he finally decided "enough". While I can understand why someone might do that, there's still a shock and a mess for someone to deal with. I would hate to do that to a loved one.
  5. ..sort of like making a mountain out of an Antheil? B-)
  6. "Gol-darn it Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue purtier than a twenty dollar whore!"
  7. Perhaps I spoke too soon!
  8. If only all of life's little problems were so easily resolved..............
  9. No, it is dedicated to Cleveland sax legend Joe Alexander. Seriously!
  10. Yes, you should have just written "min. 7 (b5)"
  11. Rare shot of Popeye w/Sal Nistico at a wedding gig.
  12. In your 13-smilie dreams, McVouty! :rsmile:
  13. Regarding the "hipster lingo", IMHO it's all a matter of context. I grew up being around a lot of those "cats"- I'm not talking about the extreme Slim Galliard "McVouty" stuff but the general lingo typical of jazz musicians hanging out. Many of my mentors were the old "hipster" types and I always dug the way they communicated w/each other. Kind of a inner-circle secret-language vibe- yes, it was/is often intended to be exclusive to "outsiders', but it also serves as a unifying "we're all in this together" kind of thing. I can see how to some it can seem extremely "jive", and some people definitely overdo it, but it's a cultural remnant that I'd hate to see disappear completely. Not to mention black is slimming. EDIT: ..and as Jim said, it's all about the product. That's the bottom line.
  14. I also like this one. Sal recorded live in Half Moon Bay, CA on 2/1/81 with Mark Levine (piano), Peter Barshay (bass) and Bobby Rosenstein (drums). I don't know the last two guys other than this recording, but it's another good one. Mostly standards. How Deep Is The Ocean Stella Wise (Mobley) You Stepped Out Of A Dream I Can't Get Started (most people think of the fast tempos when they think of Sal- he could play the shit out of a ballad too!) Backlog (Nistico)
  15. On Red Records; Sal w/an Italian rhythm section. Rec. in Rome 2/27/88 All standards- very enjoyable side! Come Rain Or Come Shine Lush Life Inner Urge Empty Room (Nistico/Gould) I Should Care The Hymn
  16. ....if you overdo it do you get "pissed"? EDIT: We need a little rimshot smilie.
  17. Hunker down, folks! Good luck! Sounds like it's lost a bit of steam. Hopefully it won't recharge before it hits the coast.
  18. We would never expect anything less from you, Jim. B-)
  19. Be careful what you wish for around here.
