  1. My feelings exactly. I think as I've gotten older "quality of life" has surpassed the need to be "where it's all hap'nin". I loved living in Chicago but grew tired of the crowded big-city aspect, plus the fact that we couldn't have afforded the house we have in KC without going WAY out to the 'burbs. Now KC doesn't compare to Chicago in many ways (I miss my Cubbies and the Green Mill), but I must admit I like the slower pace and the ease with which I can get around. And yes, I love having all the seasons. The winter in KC is considerably milder than it was is Chicago, too, which is OK with me. OTOH, I lived in Missoula, MT for a minute some years ago and while it was the most beautiful place I've ever lived, it was a little sleepy culture-wise. I guess I at least need some access to some city culture. Now don't get me wrong, I love my trips to Chicago, NY, etc. I always get my creative batteries recharged. I just don't want to deal with the day-to-day dues and the inflated cost of living.
  2. I just checked out the "new" site for the first time and can't search either. Yeah, that's really an improvement. Way to go guys.
  3. What? A whole month has gone by and no BBQ stories? Starting today I'm officially on vacation (for a couple weeks). The yard is mowed and the grill is heating up. Soon the ribs will be bathing in hickory smoke and the sweet corn (which really starts to get good this time of year) will be following on the grill. It's about 80 degrees, low humidity and I've got a stack of RVGs and some cold Shiner Bocks to keep me company while I cook. Life is good today.
  4. Well, I'm off to Denton tomorrow to do the third of four jazz camps- my summer employment. This is my first time at North Texas- it will be interesting to see the level of students compared to the other camps I do. I'm sure there will be young players lobbying for future con$ideration. I'm looking forward to the faculty jams, there are certainly should be an excellent rhythm section to be enjoyed/abused. It'll be fun to see my friend Lynn Seaton (bass). Anyway, it's always fun to catch up here after being absent for awhile. Lotsa posts to read. I'm fixina* be offline for the next week, so see all y'all later. *official Texas word (spelling debatable)
  5. If they made a paper b-3, would that be called Origamissimo?
  6. I think you're right, Greg, now that I read it again. I'm glad I didn't know it at the time or I would have rationalized a much bigger purchase!
  7. Well, OK, but they have to bring their own tissues. EDIT: Hey, maybe DEEP found a new home!
  8. I can't decide between Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson. Both had exceptional Blue Notes, one after another. Are we talking leader dates only or including sideman appearances?
  9. I used this coupon today and the clerk took 20% off the entire purchase. I thought it was good for one item only. Maybe this was a mistake on her part, but she seemed quite confident and who am I to question an employee's self-esteem? B) Anyone else get this deal?
  10. Does that mean you have difficulty reading Lester Young liner notes?
  11. How about those A&M CD reissues (like Mel Lewis and Friends) where they keep all the LP art work (including solo transcriptions and lead sheets) and shrink it down to CD size. So you have lead sheets for A Child Is Born and Sho' Nuff Did and a Brecker transcription that are the size of postage stamps. Definitely a job for the ol' Magnifocus!
  12. I had to start wearing bifocals recently. No problem, they're great except when I need to look down to read music which is pretty much ALL THE FUCKING TIME!! Now I have to take my glasses OFF to be able to read. Or I can wear my old really-out-of-style pair. I guess I need to get ANOTHER non-bifocal pair of glasses. Sheesh.
  13. Is the board running slow for anyone else today? I made a "love offering"...didn't seem to help much though.
  14. I dunno, that monkey on the left is kind of hot...you know, perky.
  15. Not your cup of..............?
  16. Yes, Sam was quite able "to pay" for it.
  17. "Unique tenor sound" indeed! Frank is a true original and definitely falls under the category of underrated. Well into his 70s, Frank's still playing his ass off- just ask Sangrey's band mate Pete Gallio (or pretty much anyone who's heard him w/the band or elsewhere). Frank has practically developed his own language on the instrument (actually, he pretty much has his own language verbally, too! ) and is a huge Trane fanatic.
  18. The arranger was Bill Reddie, who also composed Channel One Suite for Buddy's band.
  19. ......E. Newman

  22. We bought a new Subaru Forester in January. Just recently the other car, a '97 Buick, was starting to get a little unpredictable, and since I've got a bunch of driving to do this summer I decided to get rid of it, and got a second Forester. The Forester has been a great vehicle, which I hope continues 'cause we've got two of 'em now! Speaking of repairs, I was going to get the Buick registered (this preceeded the decision to get rid of it) and had to get an inspection. Took it to a Goodyear and figured it would breeze through. Lo and behold, the guy came out and said it needed like $1,000 in repairs. I was immediately suspicious and took the car to my mechanic who found NOTHING wrong. I tell you, having a mechanic you can trust is about as important as a good doctor or dentist.
