  1. Hey Lon, speaking of DL- it would be nice to have him and his expertise around here. Think he might be interested in visiting the asylum? The Tower store appeared after I left Austin, but I frequented it whenever I came to town. I remember working for a minute (in the late 80s) at a place called CDS OF AUSTIN as a jazz buyer. I also remember getting my car repaired at a place called <warning:musician humor> AUSTIN AUTO. No shit!
  2. Isn't that a picture of disc one of the Miles/Trane box? B)
  3. Gasca was ? is ? great. Latin fire and modern bop sophistication. Too bad his recordings are few and even rarer on CD. What has become of him? Luis Gasca was living in Austin when I was there in the 80s. He had a pretty bad rep (few trusted him) and apparently he kind of moved around until he wore out his welcome in a city and then would move on. I did some charts for him that I never got paid for. He did throw me some work, though, and considering how green I was at that point I was lucky to get the experience. The one and only time I saw Chet (in Austin) he seemed pretty out of it. After the first set he disappeared with Luis and when they returned for the second set, Chet was REALLY out of it. It was still cool to get to see him though. That being said, Luis could play! He'd piss you off and then charm you back with some soulful blowing and a bigass sound. I heard a long time ago that he had passed, and then recently I heard he had faked that to avoid some kind of trouble. I have no idea where he is now. But he owes me money!
  4. Sorry I'm late. Hope you had a great birthday RDK! :rsmile:
  5. deus? That you? Happy pre-order Birthday then! I'm not late after all!
  6. I feel the same about NAOG. I would have enjoyed Jackie and Ornette both playing alto and going at it a bit. I have to say I have zero interest in Ornette's trumpet and violin playing. Love the alto (and tenor) though.
  7. A Quinn Martin Production. B)
  8. If you come to KC, let us know. Maybe you and Rooster, Eric and I can meet for some barbecue or somethin'.
  9. Yes, it was Monty Python. The Meaning of Life. "Better get me a bucket...." "It's wafer-thin........."
  10. My problem is that I have "reissue issues".
  11. Well, I wasn't aware of this. Very sad news. The cats are slipping away one by one, and it's a real drag.
  12. I think you should be feeling vastly SUPERIOR because of all the great music you've acquired! :rsmile:
  13. Stitt's you or no one. Stitt don't mean a thing. Stitt could happen to you. I didn't know what time Stitt was. Stitt's a raggy waltz. etc., etc......
  14. ....and you did get the Max Roach, didn't you, wesbed? It's a MUST-HAVE!! ....and also the Stitt! :rsmile:
  15. Face it wesbed, you're fekked!
  16. I'm sure you'll be hearing from DrJ soon.
  17. ....another vote for Richard Williams! also: Bill Hardman Tony Fruscella Dusko Goykovich (sp.?) Sonny Berman
  18. I've noticed that recordings that get discussed here, such as the AOTW, often show up on the "Hot Seller" list at CDUniverse. I think people often read a thread about a recording and run right over to wherever they order from to purchase it (I know I've done that many times- at both CDUniverse and Mosaic). For example, I'll bet Mosaic had a recent spike in sales of the Hodges set, much due to discussions here. I'll also bet a lot of people have been ordering Kenny Wheeler's MFLASE. I do know that being here and learning about recordings of which I was unaware or unsure has led me to make more informed purchases. My good-to-bad ratio has improved dramtically.
  19. A couple AM sides I've always enjoyed are "The Wide Point" with Elvin and Palle Danielson (great version of "Three Card Molly"!) and "Trilogue Live" with Jaco and Alphonse Mouzon. Albert is the undisputed master of trombone multiphonics. He can get four notes (and more I think) happening at once. Really freaky cool stuff. His sense of melody is unique and wonderful too.
  20. I always thought Bobby was pretty rude to Jackie. It seemed to me that maybe he didn't want to share the attention and treated her with no respect. And he seems coked out most of the time.
