  1. I'll B. Goren to buy this one too.
  2. Happy Birthday, Chuck! Glad you hang out here.
  3. When I lived in Chicago, from time to time I got to play with an excellent bassist, Marlene Rosenberg. She spent some time touring with Joe Henderson, and is a wonderful (and underrated IMHO) musician.
  4. I think both the Coltrane/Hartman and the Coltrane/Ellington are pretty accessible for a new listener (also the Coltrane Ballads recording). I know you said you were avoiding compilations, but I think the "Gentle Side" might be a good choice. Off topic, when I think of jazzshrink at work, I picture the patient on the couch talking, and jazzshrink responding "Mm-hmm....yes.....and how does that make you feel?...." while the whole time he is discretely on his laptop hanging out here and ordering CDs. Just kidding. I'm sure you are the consummate professional.
  5. These are some of my favorite Cannonball Adderley sides. Moose no likey?
  6. Potentially threatening to an otherwise sound marriage, though.
  7. A couple rentals this weekend- Big Fish, which I enjoyed as expected. Tim Burton's films always have stunning visual moments. Both Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor delivered well, IMHO. A surprise for me was The Last Samurai. I din't know what to expect, but I thought it was very good- Tom Cruise didn't go overboard as he usually does. This one's release seemed to be overshadowed by the whole LOTR hype. BTW, when I rent DVDs, it seems they often "freeze" at some point. I've gotten in the habit of cleaning them before putting them in, and even that sometimes doesn't always prevent problems. It sure blows the groove when it happens. I think the general public in general isn't hip as to how to handle CDs- when I examine them, they basically look like a Jackson Pollock painting. Does this make anyone else crazy?
  8. I seem to be weakest late at night. That's when I place most, if not all, of my Mosaic orders. Often it's after coming here- I somehow rationalize making the purchase and head over to the site. I had to start a second shelf in the bookcase for the expanding Mosiac collection, and I need to fill it up. Feng shui, you know........yeah, that's the ticket........
  9. Congratulations! You won't regret it. Three excellent sets. EDIT: BTW, I just ordered the Hodges myself. And last week was the Shorter/Morgan. This place is killin' me. But it hurts so good......
  10. Happy Birthday Larry!
  11. Next question: Ruth's Chris Steakhouse WTF? Yes, WTF indeed. Nothing on the old wesite either...just sounds stupid... Don't know much about this, but from what I do remember, isn't "Chris" the son of "Ruth"? I think she named the chain after him. All I do know is that it's hard to say without spitting. And a little overpriced- I still think I can do just about as well with a good quality steak on my own grill. They do have good side dishes, though. ......and what's this whole "aged beef" thing? How do they "age" the meat w/o it basically ROTTING? Is it low humidity refrigeration? In my fridge, "aged" beef often ends up in the trash......
  12. If I could only buy one of them, I'd get them both.
  13. Actually, if you replace all the words "him/his/he" with the words "her/hers/she" it's not so far off. It's scary how true it suddenly seems. Really, really scary.
  14. Say, Jim A., I think I'd like to change my name to "Gym Die". 'Cause that's how I feel when I go there. ...or maybe "Buttercup"......
  15. If you want to talk specific moments, here are several that come to mind for me. Jazz At The Plaza - On Oleo, the transition from Miles' solo to Trane's, where Trane finishes the scale Miles was playing. On Mile's recording of Stella By Starlight, after the first chorus (Miles plays the head) going into Trane's solo. The rhythm section goes from a two feel to an extremely swinging medium four feel, and Trane just floats on top of it all. There are several spots on Jack Johnson where Miles' use of space creates some great tension. Then he re-enters, and it almost always makes me smile. On the Plugged Nickel recordings- Green Dolphin Street, the transition from Wayne's solo to Herbie's. I'm also thinking of many moments on Miles Smiles that are favorites. I didn't actually intend for this to be strictly a Miles-related response, but when I think about it, his groups have provided more of these great moments than just about anything I listen to.
  16. You lost me with that that sentence. I was with you up to then. B) EDIT: ..and what about Abercrombie?
  17. Wow, great choice SW! There is some excellent writing on this recording. Wheeler's charts really sound like no one else's (to my ears). I love the way he uses Norma's voice to double lead lines, a device that doesn't always work. He uses some really nice cluster voicings for the horns too. The small group stuff is primo too- I also like his version of "By Myself", a tune associated w/Fred Astaire. There's a tune that should be heard more often. Does the intro of the first tune remind anyone else of the "Magnificent Seven" theme? For anyone interested in looking at the scores to these pieces, they are published in a book- the same publisher also put out the scores to Maria Schneider's first recording (Evanescence). I think Fred Sturm (who was teaching at Eastman at the time) put these together. I can't tell you the exact publisher 'cause I don't have them in front of me at the moment. I'll get that info when I get a chance. Definitely worth getting if you're a "score hound" though! We could stand to start a Wheeler thread (is there one already?)- there are many different things he's done that I think many here would like.
  18. Of course now that you have your license you can pretty much drive him anywhere. Hisappy Birsuthaday! :rsmile: EDIT: Just tell him you're going for ice cream.
  19. I think his character has really developed over the years, but I also think that...........oops, thought this was an ER thread.
  20. They're really only good when they're fresh and warm. After that they harden into little arterial bullets. I see them in grocery stores all the time- by that point they are past their prime and have entered the realm of "just another lame doughnut". But when they're fresh......mmmmm..(I'm thinking about jazzshrink's avatar) I've pretty much given up on doughnuts- the damage outweighs the pleasure for me. Same thing with Ben and Jerry's and those other high fat ice creams. Just can't rationalize it anymore.
  21. Sad news.
  22. Sale Away (Tom Harrell)
  23. Street Life (Crusaders)
