The vinyl fanatic in me refused to purchase CDs when they appeared. Did not like the sound.
Gave in in the late 80s when Blue Note Japan released CDs of favorite albums with bonus tracks. That was in pre-TOCJ days!
It's been a losing battle ever since and now I have managed to squeeze hundreds of CDs in my place.
Certainly not among Chet's best but it is not really THAT bad. A bit too respectful IMO (same goes for Jimmy Mundy's arrangements).
I have the gatefold Limelight mono original vinyl and am not bothered by microphone placements
The liner notes fail to give the name of the engineer who recorded this.
Looks like Art Blakey was not signed to any label in the mid-50s.
Albums under his name appeared on various labels (EmArcy, Columbia, Pacific Jazz, Elektra, Vik, Bethlehem, ...) at the time.
Volume 9 will include a number of broadcasts including the ones with Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman and Fats Waller and also with the Benny Goodman Sextet (and Charlie Christian).

I have not read it in quite a long time but I remember looking for any issue I could lay my hands on in the '50s (that was before the swingin' 60s).
The weekly was pretty jazz-oriented then!
