  1. I thought I'd seen it all but that one is total and utter lunacy ...( ) ← Not really when you consider how rare (and good) the album is. Versailles is a label that has barely been reissued. The Sacha Distel-Bobby Jaspar LP on Versailles is another very much sought after album. The René Urtreger Versailles reissue was made for the Japanese market. It is a very limited edition of 300. 250 copies went away very quickly and the few remaining ones (hardly a dozen) are hitting whatever market there is for this type ofmaterial. The reissue is a beautifully done job (apparently it was also authorized by Urtreger). It's an exact replica of the original vinyl supervised by the Sketch people when they were still releasing albums on their label which folded a few months ago. With excellent mastering. Exactly what every vinyl reissue should be like!
  2. Guy Lafitte 'Joue Charles Trenet' (Black and Blue)
  3. Yes, Jim. That one! Always assumed this was the original cover. Bought the Japanese vinyl shortly after it was released, back in 1979!
  4. The cover of the 'K.B. Blues' I have looks different. It has a dark blue cover with 'K.B. Blues' and Kenny burrell in large yellowish-brown Reid Miles-type letters. There is also a black/white photo of KB in,serted. Cover design by Toshikazu Tanaka!
  5. I have 'Freedom' and 'K.B. Blues' and like them quite a lot. The 'K.B. Blues' is excellent with a terrific lineup. 'Freedom' is more of a mixed bag. Two good sessions, one of them with Seldon Powell, one of my favorite underrated saxophone players!
  6. Oui!
  7. 'Crepescule' originated on the Riverside 'Monk's Music' LP. The album was produced by Orin Keepnews who also wrote the liner notes without checking a dictionary. He did however note that the word meant 'Twilight'. French fans of Monk had fun with that word when the album was released!
  8. Willie The Lion Smith & Don Ewell 'Grand Piano' (Sackville) next: 'The Drums' By Jo Jones (Jazz Odyssey) where Papa Jo explains (and demonstrates) the techniques of the great drummers of the Past (from Baby Dodds) to Sid Catlett! Amazing!
  9. How about this for a reissue vinyl?? René Urtreger on Versailles Managed to get my copy for €30. Did not believe the Paris-based seller/reissuer when he mentioned that eBay price!
  10. That's what some of the French team players are down to these days... I'm sorry to say this but the team is just not World Cup worthy And LAL, yes, it's good to have those African teams making it for the first time. They should provide interesting soccer games!
  11. BFT 30 disc arrived this morning! Thanks!
  12. not that I really care, but: ← OK Switzerland proved to be a good match for the French team BUT the Swiss goal was headed against his side by Lilian Thuram

  14. I would say, wrong coach. Raymond Domenech has failed to build a real national team. Domenech started by trying a number of players and never stopped... The team spirit just went away. And bringing back Zidane instead of relying on promising new players is not the way to create a worthy team.
  15. France still manages to fail as a winning team. They tied 1-1 to Switzerland and will have to defeat Cyprus next Wednesday to qualify. With or without Zidane, the team is not fit to play the 2006 World Cup!
  16. John Lewis and Hank Jones 'Piano Play House' (Toshiba) with George Duvivier and Shelly Manne

    Black & Blue

No need to apologize, Billie. You're more than welcome here... on any Forum! As long as you keep pushing those great albums
  18. I have the music from the first three lists but in other editions. As for the fourth list, I do not have the Keith Jarrett Trio, the Steve Coleman, the Zorn, the WSQ, the Braxton, the Dave Holland Quintet, the Muhal Richard Abrams, the Tim Berne, the Steve Lacy, the Henry Threadgill, the Uri Caine. I'll pass on these except the Muhal and the Zorn! And if anybody is looking for the Headhunters vinyl? I'll live without it
  19. Went to a record convention this weekend. I did not want to spend more than €100 ($120) and thought I'ld be way under since jazz vinyls are not very well represented at the Paris conventions. But I arrived just as a couple of sellers were setting up tables with hundreds of jazz vinyls. Some guy was discarding his collection, or at least a good part of it. Lots of great stuff I already had (the rare Duke Ellington CBS twofers, the Count Basie CBS boxes of ten LPs, the RCA Fats Waller boxes, and many more. Masses of Ellingtonia, Basie, Armstrong, MaryLou Williams, BNs, etc... Most at pretty reasonable prices (not the BNs). When I had finished going through the collection, here is what I got for my €100 (since I was their first buyer of the day, I was entitled to a discount!): - Mezz Mezzrow A La Schola Cantorum (Ducretet Thompson), - John Lewis & Hank Jones 'An Evening with Two Grand Pianos' (Little David/Atlantic), - John Lewis & Hank Jones 'Piano Play House' (Toshiba), - Don Ewell & Willie 'The Lion' Smith 'Grand Piano' (Sackville), - Jo Jones 'The Drums' 'Jazz Odyssey twofer), - Guy Lafitte Joue Charles Trenet (Black & Blue), the original version not the later reissue, - The Pete Johnson/Earl Hines/Teddy Bunn BN Sessions' (Mosaic), - Duke Ellington 'Solo' (President), a limited edition of 1,000, - Paul Gonzalves 'Avec les Swingers et les Four Bones' (Riviera), - Miles Davis All Stars, vol. 1 (Prestige ten-incher), the one with 'Bag's Groove' and 'Swing Spring' with Monk, Bags, etc... All in mint condition except the Mezzrow (pretty good copy, though) and the Miles ten-incher (cover was in reasonable condition but it had broken seams, vinyl looks better than good). The Jo Jones and the Mosaic will go to friends who are looking for those! Most of their stuff was grabbed pretty fast by other buyers. There was more worthy stuff available at other tables but I abstained until I came upon a beatup copy of the ultra rare Pretoria Georges Arvanitas Trio with Gene Taylor and Louis Hayes. This was up for grab at €10! Had to go overbudget on that one! Now when did I already say I was giving up on buying vinyls?
  20. Georges Arvanitas Trio 'Cocktail For Three' (Pretoria) with Gene Taylor and Louis Hayes A very rare French LP I found at a record convention this weekend. This usually fetches hundreds of dollars. The cover has some damage including a small teared up section and there are several bad spots on the vinyl but it sounds OK except for two scratches which should be fixed. It was on sale for €10 ($12) and I grabbed it. Had never seen a copy of it before! An excellent album which has been reissued in Japan only. My Great Find of the month!

    Black & Blue

I have the Black and Blue vinyl original of that excellent session. The title of that album was 'The Dirty Old Men' Edited add: This thread is not in its proper Forum. It should be moved to the Miscellaneous Music forum...
  23. Looks like some people are trying to keep the Billie Holiday Masters of Jazz series alive! Check this! Click on Masters of Jazz...
  24. Walt Dickerson and Richard Davis, courtesy of SteepleChase... now: 'Divine Gemini' next: 'Tenderness' Musical bliss!
  25. No, she did not. Billie Holiday was recording a session for her 'Lady in Satin' album that day and she arrived late at the party. She sang 'When Your Lover Has Gone' and 'Don't Explain' with Buck Clayton and Mal Waldron and others. The two songs were included in volume II of 'Jazz at the Plaza/Duke Ellington & His Orchestra' releases.
