  7. I'ld go for 'Tears' by the Quintet of the Hot Club de France (Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt). Great melancholy period piece!
  8. Belgian-born artist Jean-Michel Folon died of a leukemia in Monaco today. He was 71. His drawings adorned the covers of numerous magazines including 'The New Yorker' and 'Le Nouvel Observateur'. Folon website

  10. 'Jazz Life' is getting bigger every day. It's now listed as being 720 pages. It also includes one CD! The Paris Taschen store does not have copies yet. Want to look at the thing first before parting with my money!
  11. Earl Hines 'Hines Comes In Handy' (Audiophile)
  12. When I caught this, I thought this was about the other C.T... Good luck with you move, Clifford. You'll be in good company there! The Austin Chapter of the Big O. is getting quite crowded.
  13. In France, music albums are considered the caviar of culture... Records and caviar get the 19.8 rate! The rest of the food (and water) and the rest of cultural products get the reduced 5.5 rate. I have tried to ingest my music of choice with a caviar spoon but it does not work
  14. What are you people complaining about?!? VAT on music albums in France remains at a scandalous 19.6 percent! Probably an EU record VAT on books and other 'cultural products' remains at 5.5. But musics records are not considered as being part of the 'culture'
  15. Recommended Music to Relax to... Terry Riley's Persian Surgery Dervishes (New Tone) But don't get too stressed if you can't find it...

  17. The Pepper Adams is a superb session. With quite a lineup: the seldom heard Lee Katzman on trumpet and a Big League rhythm section of Jimmy Rowles, Doug Watkins and Mel Lewis. If the sound is only half as good as the one on the Toshiba Japan vinyl reissue I have, you'll be a happy man!
  18. Wow, that rare! In view of what I have seen from Claude Schlouch's work, I am tempted. I'll be in touch...
  19. Bill Leslie 'Diggin' The Chicks' (Argo mono)
  20. I see them pretty often in secondhand shops at half that price. Did not check the official price at the big stores here...
  21. Don't forget to look for the albums at the FNAC in central Strasbourg! They should have all these Francis/Schwarz sets at better prices than the Harmonia Mundi stores. Wish I could join you for a choucroute dinner at one of the riverside winstubs! Strasbourg is a beautiful city!
  22. Up. Claude??? Anyone? Did anybody ever get, see or hear that box? A very limited job indeed. Looks like it circulated in Japan only and disappeared.
  23. Small mystery about a famous Claxton photo solved. The photo has been published in numerous books (it's a double page spread - pages 56-57 - of the previous Claxton opus from Taschen 'Jazz Seen'. The one of the young tenorsax player being hugged by a black girl on Times Square. Always thought the musician looked a lot like Ben Caruthers, the actor in the John Cassavettes film' Shadows' but could not find anywhere hwas ever a musician. Turns out it was indeed Caruthers. Claxton tells the story in the introduction to his new book: http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/excerpts/p.../show/7/132.htm
  24. Bertrand, next time you run into him, tell him to come back here prompto! Sérieusement
  25. Neveronfriday, informatively Andre Francis and Jean Schwarz also produced a series of lowpriced 2CD sets of all the jazz greats (Armstrong, Bechet, Ellington, Hampton, Hawkins, Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Lester Young and others) which were released this week. They look nice and are very decently priced. Good introductions to jazz for beginners (and others!). Series is titled 'Jazz Characters' and distributed by Harmonia Mundi/Le Chant du Monde. Have not been able to find anything on the net about these new releases...
