Commodore Jazz Sets ...How good are they?
brownie replied to andybleaden's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Andy, I bought them when they were released by Mosaic back around 1990. $207 a set, with a small discount when purchasing the third set if you had already purchased the first two. There is so much superb music in the first two sets - a little less in the final one - that if you have a chance to get them, do not hesitate! All three sets had a 48-page booklet. A 68-page discography came with the third box! Good luck! -
Allen, you could try getting them direct from Philology You'll probably need to be patient...

And this one?: Charlie Parker at the Open Door (2CD) TKO/Magnum/Ember Benny Harris on trumpet, Al Haig and Bud Powell on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Recorded live at the Open Door, New York, 26th July 1953. Tracks 1 Out of Nowhere Green, Heyman 3:04 2 Star Eyes DePaul, Raye 3:55 3 Cool Blues Parker 4:44 4 East of the Sun (And West of the Moon) Bowman 3:26 5 The Song Is You Hammerstein, Kern 6:02 6 My Little Suede Shoes Parker 2:15 7 52nd Street Theme Monk 2:36 8 Ornithology Harris, Parker 3:17 9 Scrapple from the Apple Parker 3:25 10 I Cover the Waterfront Green, Heyman 2:26 11 This Time the Dream's on Me Arlen, Mercer 4:14 12 I'll Remember April DePaul, Johnston, Raye 4:13 13 My Old Flame Coslow, Johnston 4:18 14 52nd Street Theme Monk 2:59 15 I Remember You Mercer, Schertzinger 3:01 16 All the Things You Are Hammerstein, Kern 4:14 17 Hot House Dameron 3:17 18 Just You, Just Me Greer, Klages 2:02 19 I'll Remember April DePaul, Johnston, Raye 2:36 20 52nd Street Theme Monk :35 No idea of release date, though. Maybe the Philologies came first. ← The two Philology CDs have four sets from the Open Door date. Same 19 tunes in a slightly different order. No release date on the Philology but I am sure they were released before the Embers. The Philologies have notes by Robert Bergman, a co-author of the Charlie Parker Discography that Cadence published.

Don't think volumes 24 and 25 which have the 1953 Open Door sets (with Bennie Harris, Bud Powell, Al Haig, Mingus and Art Taylor) have appeared anywhere else yet. Many volumes have some additional material that did not show up in previous CDs before. Will have to recheck on the rest of the issues...

No idea. Talked briefly to Urtreger between sets but did not ask him about future recordings. He is one of the pianists in this just released album and appears on a couple of tracks Anne Ducros but I am no fan of this singer. She sings in english and always seems to be overdoing it.

Mike Melillo, Hal Galper and Jim McNeely are the pianists on the various sessions from the Phil Woods box. Great fan of Phil Woods here!

My non-jewish wife reminded me of it today Shanah Tova! From a bad Jew!

Caught Rene Urtreger live today when he played a date with his trio (Pierre Boussaguet on bass and Eric Dervieu on drums) at a place called Espace Clacquesin in Malakoff on the southern edge of Paris. Bad luck and major commitments had made me miss his recent appearances. Urtreger was in great shape and spirit and was obviously delighted at playing for a very appreciative full house. He looks half his age (or almost) and his repertoire seems to be as large as Hank Jones'. The trio started strong with 'Old Devil Moon' and went through Monk, J.J. Johnson, Urtreger tunes mingled with ballads. I was amazed by the music from this trio and its vitality. The place was also very interesting. Clacquesin was a quite popular vermouth decades ago and still is being produced. The Espace Clacquesin turned out to be a distillery. A music stage has been arranged inside the building and provides good view of the proceedings and excellent acoustics. Urtreger will be playing next month at the Lionel Hampton Club inside the Paris Hotel Meridien Etoile with veteran vibraphone player Michel Hausser who I have not seen or heard in ages. I won't miss this.

I go with that too! One autographed album that came my way is Lou Bennett's 'Amen' on French RCA. With Jimmy Gourley, Jean-Marie Ingrand and Kenny Clarke. The copy was signed by all four musicians...

This one is going to be listed on its correct recording date: October 20, 1959. Would have hated to miss including that one ← blame it on the BN proofreading department! ← I tend not to believe it when people on this Board - or anywhere else - state that RVG is deaf. I do believe however when people state that the BN proofreaders are blind!

About Jamal at Alhambra, the Ruppli book says July 1961. I have the Cadet reissue of the album. Liner notes say the record date was June 1961!
