  1. The Benny Morton and Jimmy Hamilton Blue Note Swingtets. A marvellous early Mosaic vinyl release!
  2. Was listening to that duo date yesterday and replayed it today. This is one hell of a record! Can't think of a better Coleman. He and Tete Montoliu really went down very far for inspiration. I'll be getting back to that one again right now...
  3. I'm with John. That's one Don Cherry album I do not return to. So many good dates with him, don't bother about that one!
  4. Hmm, my cover of numbers 1&2 is white and the background of the painting is orange, not yellow. Are there more versions of this cover available? Same with the labels (blue/white instead of red/purple)?! numbers on eBay My copy of that Nessa LP nr. 1 looks exactly as shown in the eBay link. Except the back cover is much cleaner.
  5. Walter Davis Jr '400 Years Ago, Tomorrow' (Owl)
  6. Tony Scott may have been lost in meditation for a time but he remains a hardcore jazz musician and is playing hotter than ever! He is not in the same world as Winter, Jarrett, Horn or some others!
  7. I'm shocked! Haven't seen those French ads yet! At least in the streets I go to or in the newspapers I read!
  8. Had no idea that Mildred Bailey died penniless! From the Poughkeepsie Journal today:
  9. Hey, I have the original. The LP is in better shape than I am. Wolff, if you're really in that bad a shape, please let me have that Frank Wess on your Last Will. Never saw or heard that one! Take you time No need to rush things
  10. You're right, it's a terrific LP. So good in fact, that the obsessive-compulsive I am will snatch it up if I ever see it on CD. Great versions of "Green Dolphin Street" and "Frank's Tune" in particular, which reminds me that Frank Strozier is also on the date. I saw that octet when they toured the UK back in 1979 I believe. Strozier was certainly on alto. I see the 'Big George' LP quite va bit in second hand racks over here (wasn't it on Affinity?) Affinity, for sure. That's how I found about this great band! Wish they had toured over here...
  11. May 10: 1927 - Louis Armstrong and the Hot Seven record session for Okeh (Alligator Crawl, Potato Head Blues) 1957 - Paul Quinichette (with Curtis Fuller, Sonny Red Kyner, John Jenkins...) record session for Prestige (On the Sunny Side) 1957 - Kenny Burrell/Barry Galbraith quartet record session for Prestige ('Guitar Soul' on Status) 1962 - Pony Poindexter (with Gene Quill, Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Billy Mitchell, Pepper Adams, etc..) record session for Epic (Pony's Express) 1981 - Stan Getz Quartet (Lou Levy, Monty Budwig, Victor Lewis) at Keystone Korner, record session for Concord (The Dolphin)
  12. I like 'Harlem Blues' too. But then I also enjoy most of Phineas Newborn albums. A very inventive musician with dazzling technique. There was a reunion of the 'Harlem Blues' trio (Brown, Elvin) on the 1976 Contemporary label again 'Back Home'. Just as good. A suggestion (and favorite Newborn album): check the 'Solo Piano' album on Atlantic.
  13. Isn't it 'Micheline Pelzer'. Her father played host to many visiting jazz stars in Liege, Belgium and I think that's how she got the invite to do the recording with Wayne. There's an interesting section on this in James Gavin's 'Deep in a Dream' book. Just been playing Dizzy Gillespie 'Perceptions' Verve deep groove pressing. Lovely stuff - superbly orchestrated by JJ Johnson. Followed up with Rhoda Scott 'The Thad Jones Mel Lewis Orchestra With Rhoda Scott' (Japanese Barclay). This one smokes !! Not ssure. I just wrote what was on the liner notes. Definetely Micheline Pelzer, the drum-playing daughter of saxophonist-pharmacist Jacques Pelzer. She is also listed as Michelin Prell on the BN vinyl front and back covers (and also in the Ruppli-Cuscuna BN book) Now playing: Harold Land Jazz Impressions of Folk Music (Imperial)
  14. Many thanks, Jim! Sounds good to me. I need to listen to those panicked ants! Will be on the lookout for that album even if it's not on the Cadence lists!
  15. I was all Red and Blue but went for Blue...
  16. Wouldn't pay 50 cents for a hot dog from the seller! He does not even know that Sean Penn was not in 'The Rain Man'! His hot dog looks like it was aborted...
  17. May 9: 1949 - George Wallington Septet (Jerry Lloyd, Kai Winding, Brew Moore, Gerry Mulligan, etc.) record session for Savoy 1952 - Miles Davis (with JJ Johnson, Jackie McLean, Gil Coggins, Oscar Pettiford, Kenny Clarke) record session for BN (Young Man With a Horn) 1953 - Charlie Parker (with John Lewis, Curley Russell, Kenny Clarke, Candido) at Birdland, released on Columbia (Summit Meeting at Birdland) and various labels 1954 - Elmo Hope (with Freeman Lee, Frank Foster, Percy Heath, Art Blakey) record session for BN (New Faces New Sounds) 1961 - Dexter Gordon (with Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones) record session for BN (Dexter Calling)
  18. If this is the end, I'll stick to Lester Young's version of 'These Foolish Things' on Aladdin and spin it endlessly...
  19. From the New York Times today:
  20. Bet Francois told the principal to go foutre in the air
  21. Some I'ld be interested in reading biographies of: - Art Blakey - Wardell Gray - Lennie Tristano - Juan Tizol All seemed to have interesting things going on when they were around.
  22. Paul Quinichette 'PQ' (UA) with Harry Edison, Snooky Young, Dick Vance, Shad Collins, Al Grey, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green, Eddie Jones, Jo Jones A superb cast for a superb album
  23. Bobby Few? An outstanding pianist whose name may be not very familiar in the States because he has been based in Paris since the late sixties. He played with Steve Lacy's group for some ten years here. Heard him a number of times and he is one of those players who never leave you down! If you happen to be in New Jersey, try to catch him when he plays in Mapplewood at the end of the month: http://www.undergroundconcerts.com/bobbyfew.php
  24. Thanks Jim (and Hans, too!). Is that Sandole Project as good as the Fantasy album? Found this on Dennis Sandole: http://elvispelvis.com/dennissandole.htm I now know where he has been all these years. And now, where have I been all this time without knowing about him

    Funny Rat

The Revenant played an Holy Ghost on their Nefertiti doubleCD release. The liner notes list only four sides for each disc BUT each disc has SIX tracks; Track 5 on both is a blank fill-in space. Track 6 on disc 1 is the 2nd version of 'Call' (all 6:36 of it). Track 6 on disc 2 is the Untitled Sample (actually, a 2nd version of 'D Trad, That's What' (all 20:07 of it). Have not heard (or seen either) the Revenant LP issue of this. Let's thank Revenant for including everything available even if they erred in the tracks listings. And let's continue to blame the out-of-tune piano at the Montmartre. Cecil Taylor must have hated that one!
