  1. The New York Times report today on the auction.
  2. Joyeux anniversaire, Mike
  3. He had a morbid fascination with weapons, from what I read of some interviews of him!
  4. Paul Robeson's attempt at jazz singing was not very successful. He sang 'King Joe' - a tribute to Joe Louis with lyrics by Richard Wright - with the Count Basie Orchestra back in October 1941. Don't think he gave jazz singing another try.
  5. This was from a concert that Wes Montgomery's quartet gave at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris in March 1965. I attended that concert! I think the concert was broadcast by the French national radio ORTF. Tapes were 'borrowed' by the people who were releasing those Byg albums of French radio concerts in Japan (and elsewhere). So the concert soundtrack was first released in Japan, then was reissued by Affinity, the english label. All vinyls. There was a further CD issue of part of the concert on the France's Concert FCD label that issued a number of concerts with the authorisation of the government-owned French INA archives until a number of musicians complained about the FCD issues, sued the producers and won their case! Sound is very good. Can't remember a voiceover on any of these. Very nice music! If you have no issues with the Definitive label...
  6. This discography of Kenyon Hopkins sheds no light: http://www.dougpayne.com/khdisco.htm#MISTER%20BUDDWING My favorite Hopkins score remains the one he did for one of Elia Kazan's best (and forgotten) film 'Wild River' with Montgomery Clift and Lee Remick.
  7. February 20: 1940 - Count Basie broadcast from the Southland Cafe, Boston 1940 - Alix Combelle and his Swing Band (with Django Reinhardt record for Swing 1951 - Django Reinhardt and friends broadcast from the Club Saint-Germain on the opening day of the Paris club (full broadcast on vol. 19 of the Integrale Django Reinhardt from Fremeaux 1954 - Chet Baker record for Columbia (Chet Baker with Strings) 1959 - Johnny Hodges (and Duke Ellington) record the album 'Back to Back) for Verve 1964 - Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers record for Riverside (Kyoto)
  8. Nice haul you picked up, Clunky! The BG Sextet 10-incher has various sides from 1945. That should be Red Norvo on vibes, Teddy Wilson and Mel Powell alternating on piano, Mike Bryan on guitar, Slam Stewart on bass, Morey Feld on drums.
  9. Thanks Mike for checking and posting that Cadence interview. Another trumpet player who flunked the Cecil Taylor test was the Great Kenny Dorham on that 'Hard Driving Jazz/Stereo Drive' UA session.
  10. From The New York Times today.
  11. I have this on a US MCA/GRP disc 'Pure Ella'. This has the full 'Ella Sings Gershwin' album plus 12 more standards with Ella backed by Ellis Larkins. I am no big fan of Ella but I love that CD!
  12. You're more than welcome, Sister Now spinning... Emily Remler 'Flying' (Concord)
  13. Muggsy Dawson, cornet, Floyd O'Brien, trombone, Jimmy Granato, clarinet, Hodes, piano, Earl Murphy, bass, vocal, Hap Gormley, drums. Recorded in Chicago, April 10, 1954. Says the Lord! Should be good...
  14. From what I always heard, it was the club's managers to take care of the ASCAP/BMI licensing/royalties fees. The managers in this case seem to be trying to have the musicians foot the bill! That's very cheap!
  15. There's another Joe Albany album out on Fresh Sound that is excellent, even better than 'Portait of a Legend'. It's 'The Legendary Joe Albany - Live in Paris', recorded live at the Riverbop club in Paris in 1977. Six solos (with vocals by Albany on 'Lush Life' and 'Christmas Song') and five trio sides with Alby Cullaz on bass and Aldo Romano on drums. Albany is magnificient thourghout. Notes by Amy-Jo Albany, his daughter. One to get for fans of Joe Albany!
  16. Niels Petersen/Philippe Catherine 'Art of the Duo' (Enja)

  19. Any difference with that earlier release (on the Italian BluJazz label)? Except for some tune titles change... ALBERT AYLER QUINTET 1970 - LIVE Saint-Paul de Vence, 25 July 1970 Tracks 1. 20. Too bad the Mosaic box 'Kenton Presents' is not available anymore. It had some excellent Bob Cooper sides (plus a lot of other goodies). One Bob Cooper I have enjoyed is the Fresh Sound album 'For All We Know', a 1995 date with Lou Levy on piano, Monty Budwig on bass and Ralph Penland on drums. Highly recommended!
  21. Ray Charles was enjoying the time he spent at the wheel of a Peugeot 306 convertible car in a publicity video that was widely seen on French screens in the 90s.
  22. I'ld rather die :rsmile:
  23. Now playing: Stan Getz 'At Large' (Verve) with an uncredited Jan Johansson on piano
  24. Patricia, all you need to know about African pianos... http://www.nscottrobinson.com/mbira.php Also if you happen to have the album, Jack DeJohnette also plays some thumb piano on the Wayne Shorter BN date 'Super Nova'
