  1. I was speaking of the original Candid label. The label was active in the early '6Os. Nat Hentoff supervised the recording sessions. Then the label went down Candid was resurrected two decades later in Europe. With original Candids reissues and new material of their own. The Taylor CD you have was part of that resurrection!
  2. Discs arrived this weekend. Gave a quick listen to disc 1. Plenty of good music but not much I could recognise apart from track 15 which was right in my books! Will listen to the disc a bit more and post impressions later this week! Many thanks!
  3. Georgie Auld Ruby Braff Serge Chaloff Victor Feldman Herb Geller Burton Greene Shelly Manne Some Europeans: Sacha Distel Ronnie Scott Martial Solal Rene Urtreger
  4. This was a session led by Buell Neidlinger for Candid. It was not released at the time of its recording, most probably because Candid went bellyup. The session was first released on that Barnaby label which reissued material from Candid. Two Ellington-related compositions were recorded then: 'Things Ain't What They Used to Be' and 'Jumpin' Punkins'. The full session with Clark Terry - and alternate takes - was released as part of the Complete Cecil Taylor on Candid Mosaic box.
  5. February 6, more: 1951 - Louis Armstrong record session for Decca with Gordon Jenkins's Orchestra ('You're Just In Love' and 'Big Butter and Egg Man') 1955 - Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers record session (Thed Preacher) for BN 1963 - Bill Evans records 'Conversation with Myself' for Verve (more sessions on the 9th and 20th)
  6. Louis Hayes-Junior Cook 'Ichi-ban' (Timeless) next: Tete Montoliu 'Temas Brasilenos' (Ensayo)
  7. Happy Birthday, Big Wheel Have a great one!
  8. Bertrand, confirm that FreshSound reissued their 2CD version of the Lee Morgan at the Lighthouse (?!?) set. The new set is out. Have seen it but not heard it. I have their earlier 2CD set.
  9. Short of getting the Mosaic box, you'ld be OK with the two other JSP Django Reinhardts 'The Classic Early Recordings, vol. 1' and 'Paris and London, 1937-1948, vol. 2'. Remastering on those was done by Ted Kendall who worked from good 78s sources. The two JSP boxes are more complete than the Mosaic which has the Swing and HMV sides only. The Decca sides are on the JSP boxes.
  10. Has this ever seen the light of day on CD??? Not that I'm aware of, but I thought I'd ask. Always been interested, especially cuz Woody's on it. The date was reissued in France by EPM back in 1990. The Nathan Davis Sextet EPM FDC5529. That CD is probably as hard to get nowadays as the original vinyl!
  11. The film deals - among other things - with the commotion in Hollywood when the arrival of the talkies changed the whole film business. In the film Jean Hagen (as silent moviestar Lina Lamont) gets into trouble because of her shrieking voice. Debbie Reynolds is then hired to dub Lina Lamont's voice for her first soundie film. I recall reading a long time ago that Jean Hagen actually dubbed Debbie Reynold's voice for part of the soundtrack of the Stanley Donen film! A shame Jean Hagen did not get the Oscar, indeed. She could have won an Oscar also for her part in John Huston's 'Asphalt Jungle'!
  12. 1935 - Michel Warlop and his musicians (including Django Reinhardt) back singer Le Petit Mishra to record the following tunes for Gramophone: - Maman, Ne Vends Pas la Maison (Mom, don't sell the house) - Petit Homme, C'est l'Heure de Faire Dodo (Little Man, Time to go to Sleep) 1941 - Edmond Hall and his Celeste Quartet (with Charlie Christian) record for BN, 1957 - Stuff Smith (with Carl Perkins on piano) record session for Verne 'Have Violin, Will Swing' 1957 - Eddie 'Lockjaw Davis' (with Shirley Scott) record session for King
  13. The Mosaic sets I have seen imported include: - the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band - the Roy Eldridge - The Tal Farlow - The Art Farmer/Benny Golson
  14. The 'Peace Treaty' album by Nathan Davis (with Woody Shaw, Rene Urtreger, Klook) is currently being auctioned on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT I'm not selling my copy!
  15. More on that Who's Who label http://www.cybermusicsurplus.com/fea_label_wwj.asp Most of the vinyl albums were released in France by Philips in the late '70s.
  16. Discs 4 & 5 of the Buddy de Franco Quartet/Quintet with Sonny Clark Complete Verve LP box
  17. Jeri Southerrn Meets Johnny Smith was recorded May 19 & 22, 1958, says the Lord!
  18. That 'Minor Swing' sequence is from the 1957 film 'Django Reinhardt' by French film director Paul Paviot. Clarinet player, third from right, might be Hubert Fol, next to him is Andre Ekyan, clarinet player at right might be Maurice Meunier. Looks like him. But could not see a credit for him on this film. Saw the film at the time of its release. Have never had the chance to have another look at it More Django is available here: http://www.djangomontreal.com/doc/Movies.htm
  19. Django died in 1953. 'Minor Swing' was shot after Django's death. Django is not playing on the film. That's his brother Joseph on the video. Trying to check on the date. I'ld say early '60s (maybe shot for Django's 10th anniversay of his death?)
  20. The 'J'Attendrai' sequence which I had never seen was obviously shot when the Quintette du HCF played in London just before the start of WWII. The Quintette did not record the song which was a hit over here in 1938 and became even more popular during the nazi occupation of France. Opening verse was 'J'Attendrai Ton Retour' (I'll Wait For Your Return)... Thanks Joe for providing the links!
  21. How about 'Somethin' Else'? The cover was pure graphic and really good. Might be interesting to have another vision of it B-)
  22. Took lessons at the Aric school of typing...

Ray Baretto (and Luis Perez) are also on Eddie Davis' 'Bacalao' - with Shirley Scott. A Prestige album that was reissued as part of the OJC series.
  24. They sell individual CDs at $11. My guess is that whoever listed the Mosaic Selects on that page is unaware that these are 3CD sets! I say Human Mistake. And fire the person responsible for this!
  25. Zora looks adorable! The Organissimo babies are adorable!
