    Funny Rat

Speaking of Joelle Leandre, the other day I was playing 'No Waiting' by Derek Bailey and Joelle, the Les Instants Chavires concert out on Potlatch! Found it a bit too opaque for my taste and gave up after about half and hour. Should I go back and try again? Or is anyone looking for that one?

    Barney Wilen

Never heard of the In Situ label until today. Which led me to check the Lord discography and this is what I found under Francois Tusques: Free Jazz: Bernard Vitet, tp, Francois Jeanneau, sop, fl, Michel Portal, b-cl, Barney Wilen, ts, Francois Tusques, p, Bernard Guerin, b, Charles Saudrais, d, perc. Comedie des Champs-Elysees, Paris, October 26, 1965 Description automatique d'un paysage desole (I) La Tour Saint-Jacques Description automatique d'un paysage desole (II) Souvenir de l'Oiseau Souvenir de l'oiseau (II) Souvenir de l'oiseau (III) All tunes on Adda/In Situ (F) 590039 (CD) titled ''1965 Francois Tusques - Free Jazz'', tunes 2, 3 and 4 on Mouloudji (F) EM13507. Le Nouveau Jazz: Barney Wilen, ts, Francois Tusques, p, Beb Guerin, Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark, b, Aldo Romano, dr Paris, January 16, 1967 Coda (p solo) Sombre (p and b only) same, pers. Paris, February 15, 1967 Dialogue 1 Cantique du Diable Les Sorciers Dialogue 2 Both sessions on Mouloudji(F) EM13507. Couple of things: Mouloudji was a short-lived (and now extremely rare) label founded by the late singer Marcel Mouloudji. Comedie des Champs-Elysees is a theater that is next door to the Theatre des Champs-Elysees concert hall. I do not have the Mouloudji LP and never heard of the In Situ release but I am pretty sure I attended the Comedie des Champs-Elysees concert and may even have photos of the event somewhere!
  3. Understand she could be a pain... but considering the fact that she stood by Bird in very adverse times, I am inclined to forgive her a lot. But why are we using the past tense when speaking of her? I think she is still around, or am I wrong?
  4. I want Brownie's vinyl and cigars. Not ready yet to prepare my will! Next item on the smoking range is a Partagas Lusitania. That should keep me going for a few additional years

    Barney Wilen

There were several free jazz dates that Barney Wilen took part in. The Mouloudji date was a session led by pianist Francois Tusques. I have never heard or seen it and hope it will be reissued one of these days. The Vogue date was Barney's 'Zodiac Suite'. Have this. Great date! There is also 'Auto Jazz' on MPS (with Francois Tusques again) and 'Le Grand Cirque' (with Enrico Rava) on Nato.
  6. The same applies to the 'To Bird With Love' book. Francis Paudras 'borrowed' many of the photos that were displayed. I don't have the details but Herman Leonard was very upset about the use made of his photos. It was also one of the sources of the dispute between Chan Parker and Francis Paudras.
  7. Yes, 'Stylings of Silver' (BN LP 1562) was the first BN colour cover. Just ahead of BN1563 Jimmy Smith Plays Pretty JUust For You. Both recorded the same day, May 8, 1957. Francis Wolff made a wise investment in Kodachrome (or was it some other colour film?) that day!
  8. Hampton Hawes 'For Real' (Contemporary) Listening to that superb session with Harold Land, Scott LaFaro and Frank Butler in glorious mono sound!
  9. It should be Ornette. Will confirm when I get the disc! hey! cool beans! me too will confirm! But I'll probably hear it before you do
  10. It should be Ornette. Will confirm when I get the disc!

  12. Glad to see you came to your senses, King Ubu! That Jass CD indeed had a couple of items which were not in the Prez Box. No need for you to come here on your knees. There must be better ways to travel to the City of Light! And when you come, a glass of Cognac - one of Prez's prefered drinks - will be shared between the two of us to honor our beloved President! The only President worthy of our unanimous votes. Prosit

    Barney Wilen

Very nice tribute, Lon. Just to edit: it's SOUS LE CIEL DE PARIS (literally Under the Paris Sky) not Sur Les Ciels de Paris! And a personal aside. Surprised you did not mention the Barney Wilen At Club Saint-Germain albums (with Kenny Dorham)! My personal Wilen favorites....
  16. Oh yeah Which ones? :rsmile:
  17. Peter, get it before it disappears! This is superb music. Some of the very best Sonny Criss playing. Just him and three outstanding rhythm sections (Sonny Clark on two of them, Kenny Drew on the other one). Never bought the BN double CD because I chased for those in vinyl days and they cost me a small fortune (Japanese LP reissues all, the Imperial originals were at unmentionable prices).
  18. Tjobbe, that's what buses are for. For years, I was a subways man mostly until I decided to give the preference to the buses and enjoy the rides. Now when going to the office - very early in the day - I board the bus not far from Notre-Dame. The bus follows the Seine river goes past the National Assembly and crosses the Place de la Concorde to drop me off at the next station. The ride in the early morning dawn is just a glorious daily experience! One of the bus drivers noticed I was walking for a couple of minutes from the bus stop right after the Concorde to take an adjacent street a little further down the street. One day he adressed me and asked very politely if I wanted him to let me off right at the street corner where I was walking to the office. Everytime he and I ride the same bus in the morning, he makes a special stop for me! I'm sure no New York bus driver (I won't even dare suggest a German bus driver ) would do this!
  19. This was on the Prez Box (22LPs) published in Italy and reissued in Japan on CDs by SoundHills, also on a number of other issues. Personnel is: Idrees Suleiman, tp on Indiana), Sinclair Raney, p, Gene Ramey, b Willie Jones, dr. The same group performed (the sides were on the Prez Box too issues) on December 15 from the Cafe Bohemia. Also on December 29 but these items remain unissued.

    Monk

His last public appearance was on Sunday July 4, 1976 when he showed up with Barry Harris at an informal party at Bradley's in the Village. Barry Harris was playing duos on Sundays at Bradley's around that time. Monk was the duo pianist that National Day! Johnny Griffin also reported that Monk showed up around the same time in a club in New York where Griffin and Illinois Jacquet (on bassoon!) were playing 'Round Mignight'. Monk said he enjoyed Jacquet's playing on bassoon. Tidbits from 'Blue Monk', a biography of Monk by Jacques Ponzio and Francois Postif published in France (Editions Actes Sud).
  21. Fresh news from Smalls Records's Luke Kaven who has many friends on this Board. From the Ihaca Journal today: http://www.theithacajournal.com/entertainm...sic/937515.html
  22. Jeez! French chef Bernard Loiseau committed suicide last year after learning he might lose his third star in his very highly-rated restaurant in Burgundy. Hope Horace Silver does not lose sleep over a three-star AMG rating!
  23. luckily we have brownie I'm confused myself
  24. Tjobbe, did you have problems with the Paris buses and subways system? I happen to be a fervent user of the Carte Orange which enables me to travel from point A to point B quickly and ride the buses, subways and RER as many times as I need. I have travelled around and find the Paris transporations system very efficient and cheap!
