There are two Crocodisc stores at the Rue des Ecoles but the jazz store - Crocojazz - is now at 64 rue de la Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, a 5 minute walk from there. Phone is 0146347838. Check the opening hours in August. And it's closed on Mondays. That's probably the store Brad went to on that Monday! The other store that Brad mentioned is Jussieu Music. The jazz store is at 5 rue Guy de la Brosse. Phone is 0143363254. Great store that is open seven day a week but since it's Agust check their opening hours. PM me before your arrival, OK? Paris is real lovely right now. Hope August will spare us the murderous heat wave of last year!

WHY??? I was just going to have a deep look at that 'Turning Point' cover of which I had a glimpse earlier today! Hope you're going to reissue it?

33rd Annual Jazz Record Bash-South Plainfield, NJ
brownie replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Dmitry, paid the event a visit back in 1994 when I was in New Jersey working at the main press center of the soccer World Cup at Meadowlands. I happened to have my one day off on one of the days of that Bash and drove my rental car to the place. Bought a number of rare records at quite reasonable prices (stayed away from the very expensive specimens). Met some interesting people, including Jerry Valburn. Also some less interesting. But a very friendly gathering altogether. Enjoyed a showing of very rare jazz-related film shorties. There were about 40-50 vendors with many unusual items. A number of people were also selling stuff out of the back of their cars (grabbed a couple of beaten BN 10-inchers without covers for next to nothing, just for the fun) in the parking lot outside the hotel. But that was ten years ago. From the several past experiences of record bashes on the East Coast I have had, the WFMU fairs are still the best! -
Came in the mail today. Merci, Marcus! Will give a good listen over the weekend...

From a 1992 edition of the Goldmine Price Guide to Jazz Albums 1949-1969: ''Original Impulse albums (1-100 and the first few titles on the 9000 series) through 1968 had an orange and brown label... ...From 1969 through 1972, the label was red and black; from 1973-74, black; and from 1974-78, purple and green.'

Have a great one, Gary! Happy Birthday

Gripe about the ^#%$# Postal Service here!

Maybe they should get Lance Armstrong to deliver their mail! He is working for them, dammit -
I'ld rather see Hank Mobley on this photo than on the 'other one'! Wish we could hear the sound!

Up because nobody seems to have paid attention to the reissue of the rare 'Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees' from November 1959. That's the Messengers unit with Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter in one of his very first appearance with Blakey, Walter Davis and Jymie Merritt. I don't think this concert was ever released outside of France (maybe in Japan?). The concert was one of the best from the series that Blakey and the Messengers gave in Paris at the time. Much better than the December 1959 concert - also at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees - that was released by Fontana as 'Paris Jam Session', the one with Barney Wilen and Bud Powell added on some tracks. The Messengers are smoking on the November concert from the opening track 'Close Your Eyes'. This was also the occasion of the initial appearance of Lee Morgan's superb tune 'Goldie'. The sound on the RCA reissue is a bit shrill but the sound on the original French RCA was not perfect. This is a very worthy reissue that should not be overlooked.

Wait until the Disconforme crowd get their hands on all these and reissue them. No questions asked. Coming up in the next few years

I recognize the Paul Colin sketch but who's posing next to it? -
Is this the European Board members meeting? Glad to see that Paris was the selected place for this

Mike, when is that glorious event taking place? I'll look up jazz happenings around here for the dates you'll drop by. A discussion from last year on Paris record stores still stands: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...42&hl=cd+stores Of the Virgin and FNAC stores, I would recommend the Virgin store on the Champs-Elysees and the FNAC Montparnasse store at Rue de Rennes (others are OK but that Montparnasse one has the best jazz selection). But I find those stores a bit expensive. If you come to Paris in August just be aware that most of the natives are away on holidays which means that a number of stores are either closed or have shorter opening hours. And that there are usually less interesting happenings in clubs.

Can't remember having seen this on CD. A quick search over the internet also proved negative. I am sticking with my original LP copy. Thompson and Levitt were with Bechet and Solal on one of the two sessions. Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke were on the second session.
-
Jazzmatazz says there are eight bonus tracks on that 'Blues In Orbit' reissue. I'll buy that!
-
It sure was. That session with Lloyd Thompson on bass and Al Ledvitt on drums. A beauty! Bechet was exclusively recording for Vogue by then!
-
The Andre Hodeir album was titled 'The Vogue Sessions'. Missing are two Gerry Mulligan releases of the 1954 Pleyel concerts.

Happy Birthday And many, many happy returns...

brownie replied to randissimo's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Hate to miss that! Hope you will record it so that we can share the experience. Was listening to Arno Marsh featured on several solos (along Bill Perkins and Dick Hafer) of the Woody Herman 1952 band appearances that came out on Jazz Band! What a player! What a band! -
Don't overlook: Paul Bley Marylin Crispell Tete Montoliu Jean-Michel Pilc Martial Solal And trust you know all about these giants: Hank Jones Tommy Flanagan Hampton Hawes Cedar Walton, etc.

Just received a shipment today from Alan Lankin. This went surface mail and was shipped on June 7.

While searching through the web, came up on this Title of the article translates: Barney Wilen on the hot seat: 'Sonny Rollins is afraid of nothing!' That was a Blindfold test I did upon a request from Jazz Magazine. It was published in the December 1957 issue. I don't have a copy of it unfortunately. Barney was 20 at the time. I was 18. We both had a great time. And may I pat myself on the back for the excellent selection of records. The choice still looks pretty good nearly half a century later. The records came from my limited collection. It has grown mightily since! The item comes from a Barney Wilen bibliography from the Darmstadt Jazz-Institute: http://home.att.net/~warren.robert/Jazzindex.htm

Some history about that plastic saxophone, mostly from the Christie's catalogue of the September 8, 1994 auction that included Bird memorabilia from the Chan Parker collection: 'An early 1950s Grafton alto saxophone of cream acrylic plastic, serial number 10265. Made in London, England, sole distributors John E. Dallas and Sons Ltd. with 'Brilhart Ebolin' mouthpiece and cream webbed saxophone strap by Ray Hipman, in original case - the saxophone given to Charlie Parker in circa 1950 by an Englishman and used by him at the Massey Hall Concert May 15, 1953. Although Parker is primarly associated with the King saxophone, he used this Grafton sax on more occasions than the Massey Hall concert. Chan recalls him playing it at the Open Door on May 9th 1954 and he also played it on at least two documented occasions.' The Grafton saxophone was auctioned for $144,500. It is listed in the Guinness World Records site: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/index.asp?id=43378
