  1. Phil Urso 'Taking Sides' with Eddie Higgins, Peter Minger & Allan Eager (Spinnster) A happy reunion from 1986 in Miami of Urso and Eager with an excellent rhythm section of Eddie Higgins, Don Coffman on bass and Steve Bagby on drums.
  2. Don't think it's French that can be heard in the beginning. Sounds more like english (or american?) to me. Tom Storer seems to hear the same. Might be the musicians talking. In any case, it's too brief to make much sense. Whoever they were, they seemed to be ready to enjoy a good evening. And they must have!
  3. Uh, I don't care, I got a life I have several lifes going on at the same time including an Organissimo life but it happens that on Sundays I have time to post here. Then on every Sunday of late, the Board disappears I know... I know... Time to catch up on my other lifes
  4. Rollins had good reasons to feel tired since the trio had played a concert in Marseille (which is 20 miles away) earlier in the day. Will relisten to what the audience shouts when I return home. Rollins must have been pleased with the reception he got from the lucky people who were at the show. What amazes me with that CD is the way Kenny Clarke managed to insinuate himself in that unique trio feel and get the right dynamics! Klook was magnifique! I was lucky to hear Rolins with Grimes and Pete LaRoca a few days earlier at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris. One of the great memories of live jazz!

    Funny Rat

Satchmo was a funny rat in his times!
  6. Marcus, with the money I have spent on Fresh Sounds releases (I started getting them back in vinyl days), I am sure they have been able to acquire gigantic headquarters in downtown Barcelona (unless they invested in Andorra properties)
  7. Chronogical Classics lifted the master from the Mosaic Nat King Cole box where 'Homeward Bound' made its first appearance. Sorry can't help you further on this right now!
  8. Actually, Verve France released five (or six?) LPs that had all - or nearly all - that was on the Mosaic box. They were released shortly before the Mosaic set.
  9. The Forum was down. Once more. Seems like the place closes down every weekend :rsly: Where is the new server that we hear about?
  10. Marcoliv wrote about track 4 - Benny Golson Quicksilver 'a Horace Silver composition on a "SBM Remastered" version from Fresh Sounds ' On the BFT disc, this Fresh Sounds reissue sounds way, way better than what I have on the original LP release of this album the Audio Fidelity 'Pop + Jazz = Swing' on which producer Tom Wilson had that weird 'trendy' idea to remix on the left and right channels - for a muddy result - all the tracks and ruin the sound of all of them. Do I have to thank Marcus for making me want to purchase another reissue?
  11. Fats Sadi And His Combo (Vogue). Japanese BMG 12inch reissue of the very rare French Vogue 10 incher original. With Roger Guerin, Nat Peck, Bobby Jaspar, Maurice Vander, Jean-Marie Ingrand and Jean-Louis Viale.
  12. This was originally released on the French bootleg label Royal Jazz. Tapes from the date must originate from the archives to the French national radio broadcast system ORTF from which the label operators helped themselves. The sound is very good for a club date. The music is on the Sonny Rollins at the VV lebel, or just about. Slightly more adventurous. As Jim said, go get it NOW before it disappears.
  13. Weren't the Debut LPs also made from the same material? They feel the same. And some of the Debut labels came unglued.
  14. Happy Birthday, Soul Stream And many, many returns...
  15. Only in my dreams
  16. For fortunate fans of Captain Beefheart, Rhino Records is currently offering a limited edition set of signed color etchings by Don Van Vliet at $500. You can have a look at it at the Rhino handmate site: http://www.rhinohandmade.com/ then click on the Don Van Vliet link at bottom right of the page.
  17. From the Mercury News today.
  18. Ray Bryant's 'Alone With The Blues' came out originally on New Jazz, then on Prestige.
  19. Booker Ervin 'The Blues Book' (Prestige, monaural) with Carmell Jones, Gildo Mahones, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson. One from the superb series of Book albums that came out in succession in the mid sixties from Prestige. Will Concord/Fantasy release a series similar to the Mosaic Selects? A Booker Ervin set would be a perfect choice to start this!

    Barney Wilen

Neither did I; The photo is currently on sale at EBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...bayphotohosting The seller says it is probably Jimmy Deuchard on trumpet! Notg really sure about it. But the Paris club looks like Le Chat Qui Peche. Photo probably taken in the late 50s.
  21. This was originally released on the Jazz West label (JWLP-7). It later came on Score then on Imperial. Do not know if there were any variations on the tracks listings. The Jazz West original is a very expensive item. The other twos much less so.
  22. Looks like the Terminal man has found a new life at the airport. Technically all he has to do to leave the terminal and go (almost) anywhere he wants, is to sign papers that would clear his situation. But he is not keen on doing this. A newsperson who interviewed him at length implies that the man is not really clear in his head! What he says about his life would be good enough material for Spielberg's DreamWorks for a couple more movie projects and it looks like DreamWorks is ready to help him travel to Hollywood. But will the Terminal man accept this in the end?
  23. Up. The man who inspired the Spielberg film is alive and well (sort of!) at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport where he has been stranded for the past 16 years! AP is running a story on him today.
  24. Couple BN albums from that era I liked (which was not really the case for a number of their releases at the time): - McCoy Tyner/Jackie McLean 'It's About Time' - Mose Allison 'Ever Since the World Ended'
  25. Ben Ratliff's review of the concert in The New York Times today:
