  1. Even Miles would not have dared! Monk was much, much bigger! Monk is reported to have said when someone mentioned a physical attack that Miles would have ended in his grave if he had dared!
  2. The New York Times obit on Miles Davis (dated September 29, 1991)
  3. Many thanks, Chris! Will get these Storyville releases.
  4. Several aspects of this recording session: - the recording date was December 24, 1954, Christmas eve. According to various reports, the session was due to start at 2PM. Three quarter of the MJQ (Jackson, Heath, Clarke) were at the studio on time. Monk arrived a bit late. Miles was the last one to arrive. He immediately started complaining about the musicians on hand, meaning Monk. That probably set the right mood for the session. The session went well into the evening. Things went into action with the musicians rehearsing the tunes that were to be recorded. - Swing Spring is a Miles tune. Don't recall there was any doubt about this (contrary to so many of Miles attributed compositions). Monk does not seem to have ever claimed it. - Ira Gitler who was present at the start of the session but who left before the incident ran into Kenny Clarke that Xmas night at Minton's and asked him how the session went. Klook just replied that Miles Davis was great! Whatever went on that day produced superb music. Isn't that what really matters? And imagine spending Christmas night at Minton's and getting a chance to listen to Kenny Clarke...
  5. Sad to hear of his passing away. He contributed mightily to the way we hear jazz.
  6. Dan Gould, I'm sure you mentioned the incident when you interviewed Bob Weinstock. Could you let us know what he said about it? Would rather hear his take on this rather than the one from (I Hate Miles) couw :rsmile:
  7. Yes, please! If it's not too much trouble. The CDs are not listed yet at the Storyville Records website.
  8. 'The Man I Love' take 2 on the Prestige album 'Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants'.
  9. The FNAC site shows the cover of the Three Tenors album: http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.asp?Mn=3...92e0907d6e&Fr=0 Sound samples are also available.
  10. And who's the third tenor? Sounds good, John! I'll put that disc on my list! What would I give to have heard and seen Edwards! Hell, I was born too late! ubu I think Claude Braud is the third tenor on that one. Just had a quick look at the album when I dropped by the store. Could not find details yet on the web about this release. John L., I missed the Sunset appearance by Teddy Edwards in 2002. Bet he played 'Sunset Eyes' there. Caught him at the La Villa club several years ago. He was magnificient! Obviously enjoyed playing in Paris. I heard a radio broadcast of another Paric concert appearance with Tom Waits.
  11. Saw this Teddy Edwards 'Three Tenors' album with the Claude Tissendier band release in the Paris stores today: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...8150727-7992154 Tissendier is a saxophonist who has been playing for the past several years with the Claude Bolling big band. He also leads small combos and has recorded albums that featured his Saxomania group with Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Guy Lafitte among others. Have not heard the Teddy Edwards Three Tenors CD yet. It was recorded in Paris in 2002.
  12. Not sure this has been mentioned before but a very nice Woody Shaw website opened recently. Great site! http://www.woodyshaw.com/

  14. Chris, you don't have to wait for Olympics to come to Paris. And believe me, the city is much more fun without the chaos the Olympics are bound to generate!
  15. Eddie Gale 'Black Rhythm Happening' (BN) Superb drumming by Elvin Jones!
  16. Here we go again. Previous discussion: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&hl=rene+mclean Do we need to investigate this anew? I tend to go along with Swingin' Swede...
  17. Sal Nistico 'Neo/Nistico' (Bee Hive) The LP sleeve includes a flyer for Bee Hive T-Shirts with a nice photo of Roy Haynes sporting one. Should have bought one of those... $5 postpaid a shirt ($6 outside the USA). Bee Hive produced great music and nice clothings. Bring them back!

    Guy Lafitte

Got hold of the Guy Lafitte 'Live Au HCF Paris - 2 Mai 1982' CD release from the Hot Club de France which turns out to be an excellent live concert. Lafitte really was in top form that night. His 'Body And Soul' is even better than on the 'Corps et Ame' album on Black and Blue (with Hank Jones, George Duvivier and JC Heard) recorded four years earlier. Lafitte hailed from Armagnac country and aged like good armagnac. Very good guitar playing by Marie-Ange Martin whom I had never heard better. And a couple of welcome appearances by trumpet player Jean-Claude Naude.
  19. There was a 5-LP box issued in Italy by an outfit called Black Shell of concert performances (in Venice, Milan and Modena) by the Freddie Hubbard Quintet of 1981 (with David Schnitter, Billy Childs, Larry Klein and Carl Burnett). It was a limited edition box. And pretty expensive.
  20. I bet the people at Disconforme will release an Erroll Garner box on Definitive or Jazz Factory of whatever as soon as the 50-year copyright limit has been reached. Will be looking for that one!
  21. A very impressive guitar player from Poland Jarek Smietana (also spelled Smetana)! http://muzyka.onet.pl/specjalne/jsmietana/ He has recorded with Art Farmer and John Abercrombie, among others.
  22. Hope it was a happy birthday!
