  1. There's also a 2DVD set that was issued in Japan by Nippon Columbia 'A Duke Named Ellington' that's amazing. It was directed by Terry Carter and produced in 1988 for WNET in the USA. With lots of superb vintage footage from early Ellington films appearances and later concerts plus a lot of interviews by people like Clark Terry, Jimmy Hamilton, Russell Procope, Willie The Lion Smith, Cootie Williams, Charles Mingus, Herb Jeffries, Louis Bellson and others.
  2. Brad, The Paris Jazz Corner people that copied the 'True Blue' image for the cover of their sales catalogue do not sell their catalogues. They are distributed free of charge. They lift album covers as homage from the jazz fans they are to the originals. Two other catalogues from the PJC were copies of the Versailles LP 'Afternoon in Paris' by John Lewis and Sacha Distel (a similar cover was used on the Atlantic LP issue) and the French Vogue LP 'Tilt' by Barney Wilen.
  3. Claude, have those two Fresh Sounds LP. Not selling them. PM me if want a copy.
  4. When I'm at work, I peek in half a dozen times a day when I have time and to get my mind away from the pressure of the job. Then about 2 or 3 times a day from home but the visits from home tend to last longer.
  5. Mikeweil and Claude have offered good answers. Cannot find any better translations for these two terms. Maybe their use in a fuller context may bring more precise translations.
  6. Several duets including Conte Candoli have been mentioned but not one that I enjoy each time I listen to: Candoli and Kenny Dorham on ´The Birdland Stars on Tour´album on RCA.
  7. Nothing tastes better than a smelly camembert. And this is coming from the country which produces more than 400 different cheeses.
  8. A very happy birthday to you, Rooster
  9. It was very organized until a few years ago. Then it started to be a mess. Now it´s chaos!
  10. Impossible, I am out of Paris until the end of the month and cannot give you all the info available. However suggest you check the Programmes list at the following site: http://www.jazzmagazine.com/ and you have a near complete list of which concerts are being held in Paris on any given days. Hope your mother enjoys Paris!
  11. This has to be the Shirley Clarke film with actors from the Living Theater. Saw this back in the '60s when the film was a minot hit on the Paris art theaters circuit. You got a chance to hear Freddie Redd's group with Jackie McLean. Film is OK. The music was great! Good luck on your search for a copy!
  12. Dmitry, love your avatar. Soutine, my favorite painter!
  13. Didn't we go through this a few months ago? Think I put in 'Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet' as my favorite. Then, it's the second time around for my favorite Miles...
  14. I discovered volume 9 of the Swedish Jazz series (the 1960-1964 one) on Caprice a few months ago and found it delightful with lots of very exciting tracks. The caliber of the musicianship blew me away. I knew that people like Lars Gullin, Arne Domnerus, Jan Johansson or Bengt Hallberg were very creative musicians but I could not imagine the diversity and the quality of jazz players in Sweden. Had heard praise for Bernt Rosengren but this set was my introduction to him. I'm a convert now looking for more Rosengren. This has been my only box from the series so far but I will be looking for some more of these boxes. Volume 9 is very highly recommended.
  15. Hope these guys will bring their music to Europe this summer!
  16. I have the box with me. It's as I described. The foldout cover could be fixed but it will never look real good. The 22 LPs are all inside and look without problems. I have listened to a couple of LPs and could not detect any flaw. Note that most of the tracks are private recordings from the forties and early fifties and most of the music is not high fidelity. But the Bird is in full flight. Practically none of the music duplicates the Mosaic Dean Benedetti box. The booklet is also in OK shape. The previous owner has written brief additional notes on three pages and the 20-page booklet has three small (coffee?) stains. The box is discussed in the Charlie Parker sessionography here: http://www.duke.edu/~bes3/jazz/session.html The items included in the various LPs are indicated (look for the Birdbox mentions). This box is looking for a new home and a birdloving owner. Don't be bashful. It's a great box. I'm not greedy. Any reasonable swap offer is acceptable. As mentioned earlier, I'll be away from Paris until the end of the month so you can take your time and make an offer.

    Jim Hall

This was the Chico Hamilton Trio on Pacific Jazz. I have the Japanese LP reissue of that one. Easy to find in my mess, it was filed right next to the Jim Hall vinyls. The 12 incher had six tracks with Howard Roberts plus four with Jim Hall(including the superb 'Blues on the Rocks'). The great George Duvivier on bass throughout. Outstanding! indeed!

    Jim Hall

Two Jim Hall albums, both recorded in Japan in 1976 a few months after the Horizon Live album, and just as good are 'Jim Hall Live In Tokyo' and 'Jim Hall: Jazz Impressions of Japan'. They were made for the Paddle Wheel label with the same trio that shone on the Horizon disc: Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums. That Jim Hall trio was really exceptionnal!
  19. EKE, glad to hear from you! You and Madrid were very much on our mind since yesterday morning.
  20. Bertrand, with all the stuff that turned out missing from the Mosaic sets since they started business, this might make an interesting Select
  21. Would agree with akanalog. The album starts on the right track with 'Changa Chikuyo', with good contributions by everybody but then it goes downhill except for an interesting but very short tribute to Paul Robeson by Larry Ridley who overdubbed four bass parts. Most of the remaining numbers are plain early fusion music. Wish Sonny Fortune had let himself go in his solos...
  22. They were at the Banlieues Bleues festival last week. Couldn't make it but there is an ecstasic review of the concert by a Sun Ra fanatic in one of the national weeklies here.
  23. It had eleven tracks from various Mosaic releases ranging from Jack Teagarden to Andrew Hill. It sold for $12 at the time but you could get it for $5 with the purchase of any Mosaic set. As Ragu said, no unavailable tracks inside.
  24. I caught most of the bands mentioned live including the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, the Doors, Led Zep, Jefferson Airplane but still it's Jimi Hendrix who rocked and rolled all over me... The Experience was a short one but the memory still lives...
  25. Those ones are pretty rare. Never came across them. Just saw cover reproductions of these Debut LPs.
