  1. A person in charge at the theater in suburban Kremlin-Bicetre where Martial Solal has a concert scheduled March 12 confirmed over the phone that the concert with Solal is on. Here is a list of the next Solal concerts: http://www.jazzvalley.com/musician/martial.solal
  2. Thanks Christiern. I remember a very long and detailed interview of Shaw that appeared several years ago in Goldmine magazine. Will try to dig up a copy of this.
  3. Christiern, if your latest Artie Shaw contribution was from a reference book, please give me the details where I can find it. I'll skip the Grove
  4. I don't listen much to Chick Corea anymore. I think he peaked when he was with Miles Davis when he took over from Herbie Hancock and contributed to that band.
  5. Sorry, Dmitry. I'm blind on that one. No idea.
  6. My standard reference book (The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz) says: 'He (Shaw) assembled his last Gramercy Five in October 1953 and after recording with the group in February and March 1954 he went into retirement. In 1983 however, he was persuaded to reorganize his band, which he has continued to conduct occasionally: it mainly performs under the leadership of Dick Johnson, who also plays clarinet.'
  7. When I was growing up, the 78RPM playing at home were songs by Yves Montand, Edith Piaf, les Compagnons de la Chanson and other French favorites of the time (early '5Os). Then my older brother got interested in jazz. Started playing Basie, Armsrong, Bechet records. I caught the bug at once. By the time I was 12, I had bought my first record a 10-in LP with New Orleans Function by the Louis Armstrong All Stars. It took years for my brother to lose interest. I lost interest in French singers (most of them) but I was hooked on jazz for life...
  8. and from me for writing 'Moon Mist'
  9. The Deccas had better sound!
  10. Weizen mentioned the cancelled concert in Washington on another thread. I have checked here and did not find anything mentioning ill health. Martial Solal is scheduled to play a concert in suburban Paris next week. The concert is still on.
  11. Great idea, should I stock up on the champagne? Plus some beer for those who lack taste
  12. If you go to the storyville-records.com site you will see that the page preceding the Special Offer 2003 indicates it's a 2004 Offer. Have stayed out of this offer so far because I have bought so much stuff lately that I have fallen behind on my listening. I have eyes on that Sadik Hakim. Have dealt with Storyville a couple of times last year. They were excellent and fast. Not a single problem. In addition to the Eddie Davis/Attenoux, they also have the Vic Dickenson album that was originally on Mahogany. I like that one very much. I'm a big fan of Vic Dickenson...
  13. Oh, yes. Best jazz reference book. Big, heavy and invaluable...
  14. This was adressed to 'no one in particular' as the Great Art Blakey used to say. If you're taking it personnal, I think that if you read Alfred Jarry's UBU ROI in French, then you should have no problem getting into Nougaro's words and nuances
  15. Sorry, can't help much on Nougaro CD releases because all the Nougaro I have are on LPs. I know there are a lot of compilations currently available. Nougaro songs I love include 'La Pluie' (with beautiful piano by Maurice Vander), 'Bidonville', 'Armstrong', 'Cecile, Ma Fille' - which he composed when his daughter was born and is still a hit even now that Cecile reached 41 -, 'Paris, Mai', 'Tu Verras', 'Ile de Re', 'Sing, Sing, Song' (based on Nat Adderley's 'Work Song). A favorite song is 'Rue Saint-Denis'. His way with the French language was pretty unique. You really have to understand French to appreciate all the nuances...
  16. The death of Claude Nougaro is the main item on the frontpages of all the French national papers today. News of his death was also the prime news on French TV and radio newsbroadcasts all day Thursday. This is an AFP obit: Loved the Chirac tribute! Chirac's aversion to music is common knowledge. One of his counsellors wrote the tribute, I'm sure. Forgot to mention on my original post that Nougaro put words to Charles Mingus' 'Fables of Faubus'. The song 'Harlem' was one of Nougaro's hits.
  17. Then how about this? http://www.storyville-records.com/OFFER.htm It says 2003 but it seems valid for 2004. Lots of fine stuff there!
  18. Wasn't the 'Port of Harlem' CD part of the series too? This one had all the Port of Harlem tracks, plus four Sidney Bechet sides and five by Teddy Bunn.
  19. Another recommendation of the McLean 'Nature Boy' album. Wonderful music!
  20. These Basie soundies (with Clark Terry, Wardell Gray, de Franco, etc.) also featured a singer by the name of Billie Holiday! And de Franco who recorded the soundtrack did not appear on film because of his color and was replaced by Marshall Royal. Those were 'enlightened' days...
  21. Welcome to this Board, JazzGirl3. Glad to hear that his daughters are keeping the flame. The flame burns bright around these parts. Quite a number of KD fans among us. Would be glad to hear some of your recollections of your father...
  22. This was the only album released on the Coltrane label. It was a LP that bore a tag that read 'A Coltrane Recording Corporation Presentation' in a bottom corner of the front cover. The front cover design was enlarged from an original sketch drawn by John Coltrane!
  23. Not strictly a jazz singer but he had a passion for jazz, Claude Nougaro performed songs related to jazz. One of his hits was a song called 'Armstrong'. Nougaro performed with jazz musicians throughout his career. His piano player was Maurice Vander. His organ player for a long time was Eddy Louiss. Pierre Michelot, Aldo Romano, Bernard Lubat, Richard Galliano all played with him. He even had Ornette Coleman play on one of his songs 'Gloria' (Barclay) in 1975. Nougaro died Thursday in Paris. He was 74. One of my favorite current albums is a CD by Maurice Vander simply titled 'Nougaro' (Universal). Vander with Michelot on bass and Lubat on drums plays songs associated with the singer. A very lovely tribute.
  24. Ubu, welcome to Basieland! Small correction, Trummy Young was with Jimmy Lunceford, not Basie. Benny Morton was another great Basie trombone player...
  25. Decades ago I bought from Prestige direct. One of the LP I received (that was when Prestige still had its 50th Street labels), the Jackie McLean 'Lights Out' had the side 1 music on one side and a repeat of that music on side 2. I still have that LP. With the OJC LP reissue alongside...
