  1. Ten days to go and I am ... @Big Al @tkeith @randyhersom@webbcity
  2. Certainly think it looks like him, and wiki says he played with Bostic after high school and before Silver so it fits 1953 time frame. Which I may have neglected to mention.
  3. I believe so (and Loren Schoenberg did also). But my first instinct was on the trumpeter, in the profile shot.
  4. trumpeter at center and alto are the question marks. The others I have no idea about.
  5. Guesses?
  6. Hour and a half interview with our own Chris Albertson on Bessie Smith https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/140891
  7. That's the presumption, or perhaps drug-related theft? Bill Doggett said on the WKCR memorial broadcast that "Everybody that met Percy loved him. Now some of the things that happened later on in his life people didn't necessarily like, but Percy as an individual was a beautiful person." That suggests to me it wasn't a stretch for possession. He was well liked. Everybody that met Percy loved him. You know, some of the things that happened later on in his life people didn't necessarily like, but Percy as an individual was a beautiful person. A wonderful man, a wonderful friend, a wonderful musician.
  8. I have not as I do not have enough personal info for such a thing. I do have hope - at least some - that a Percy France interview exists in the Schaap archive and will appear at the Vanderbilt website some day. Allen Lowe told me that he did record an interview with France but he has never found cassette. Phil Schaap would have been a great source but his physical decline was well under way when the website was still under construction. I was told that Phil was invited to dinner with Percy's parents at one time so his was a pretty personal relationship. A good example of the missing information is that it has been said by about every musician asked that they 'heard' Percy spent time at Riker's Island, the (especially now) infamous NYC jail. But nobody seems to know what put him there.
  9. More Percy uploaded from the Schaap Collection, this time two tracks from one of the best, and to me, most surprising WKCR broadcasts: Percy as sideman with Harry "Sweets" Edison. Three tracks on the short broadcast (and the only disappointment was that it was only 30 minutes, along with the fact that track three was a Sweets feature, no Percy).
  10. Cat Sank is a phonetic spelling (more or less) of four and five in French.
  11. It's very impressive - I would never have the dedication to undertake such a thing. Bravo!
  12. January 10 and one response. Man this thread is gonna be LIT AF for the rest of the month, I just know it.
  13. FWIW Earle Warren is all over the Schaap archive at Vandy: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?current_flock=false&f[description_type_search_facet_sms][]=Live+sound+recordings&indexes[]=&keywords[]="earle+warren"&myresources=0&op[]=&request_is_xhr=false&resource_description[]=&search_field=advanced&search_type=simple&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][commit]=Search&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][keyword_searched]="earle+warren"&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][keywords]="earle+warren"&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][op]=&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][request_is_xhr]=false&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][search_field]=advanced&session_solr[e25a9368b50617bd93cf629e294cb26ee45dfe0e5297402f74e84910a582601c][type_of_search]=simple&sort=title_ss+asc&title_text[]=&transcript[]=&transliteration_status=false&type_of_field_selector[]=simple&type_of_search[]=simple&user_ip=173.171.182.128
  14. Thank you Peter.
  15. yes it's all terrible to watch. FWIW I saw on FB that formerly active member Shawn has marked himself safe. You may recall he moved out to LA from Austin ... a decade ago?
  16. https://www.agweb.com/news/business/fake-farmer-steals-8-75m-green-energy-scam A remarkably intricate and well-thought out Ponzi scheme.
  17. Thanks for posting this Steve ... your knowledge is much deeper and broader than my own. FWIW I didn't find Tad's "Small Group Swing" as problematic - I felt it played up the rhythmic quality of the music and the jazz bona fides of so many of the practitioners. I am a little surprised I missed the conflation of Budd Johnson, tenor who inspired Percy France to switch from clarinet, with Buddy Johnson, pianist and bandleader with sister Ella on vocals. (Ironically while I have known the name for a long while, I very recently received a comp of the Johnson band, air checks from the Savoy ballroom, notes by Bob Porter and with Dupree Bolton in the collective personnel (didn't see that coming) ... gonna give a listen real soon). Hoping @ListeningToPrestige sees this and responds.
  18. I've been picking up Gemini recordings and this label out of Norway has a lot of recordings featuring American jazz stars that are all very nice. Been enjoying revisiting all the following, which I heartily recommend: Totti Bergh & Plas Johnson, On the Trail Totti Bergh & Al Cohn, Tenor Gladness Frank Wess, Surprise! Surprise! Al Grey & Bjarne Nerem, Al Meets Bjarne Zoot Sims with Scott Hamilton, It Had to Be You Kenny Davern - Bjarne Nerem - Flip Phillips, Mood Indigo Harold Ashby, The Viking EDIT TO ADD: Knut Riisnaes & Red Holloway, Confessin the Blues and The Gemini Twins Atlee Hammer Sextet, Arizona Blue (featuring Jon Gordon and Red Holloway An added bonus is Norman Simmons' presence on several of the above. Are there any other Gemini recordings folks here would recommend?
  19. I hadn't realized there was never a thread for the earlier book. Perhaps a new thread is in order anyway. I could start it because I am a fan and then you can tell us all the mistakes that you saw.
  20. I did not see a lot of factual errors or debatable assertions in "Jazz with a Beat" which was written by board member @ListeningToPrestige ... could you please elaborate BBS?
