  1. I am sure it was but Crawford did put himself in the record books too. Nobody had ever given up 12 homers (which I was guessing about when I posted) in 3 successive starts. Four pitchers in history had given up 11 homers over three starts (Aaron Harang, 2004; Jose Lima, 2000; Warren Spahn, 1958 and Lynn Nelson, 1939).
  2. Maybe the Red Sox hang on in Arlington, maybe not but Jesus Christ, Kutter Crawford may finally get a win despite having given up, I believe, something like 12 home runs in his last three starts. How the hell does that happen?
  3. The later recording?
  4. Not one I have ever seen in the wild. And I assume you matched track time because he performed it on a later album, post-Muse.
  5. One of his Muse recordings?
  6. Well I gotta say the picking were slim on this one, Ken. When I got to track 4, I thought, comparatively speaking this is 5 stars but in reality, about a *** track. Same on track 6. Track 7 is Sweet Georgia Brown but you can keep this rendition. Track 8 is Star Eyes at ballad tempo and far and away, not even close, the star of the show. 4 stars. Track 9 sounds Pre-Felser to me and that's all I got. Track 10 - Confirmation (?) Al Haig or someone like him? Track 11 - Stitt on alto? 12-15 we're back in that wide zone of not my thang, sorry. Track 8 is of definite interest, 4, 6, 10 and 11 less so. Thanks for putting this together. I am sure others will find more to savor and guess at or ID.
  7. Don't give enough of a shit to think about it.
  8. The time I am spending watching a garbage team fuck games away needs to be replaced with time spent here. FUCK the Red Sox.
  9. Gorts run amok. To be clear Brad, was there a claim that the LA storeowner had pushed someone out the door or was that brought into the conversation about some other unpleasant record store owner?
  10. As I think of it, a couple of shops I would visit in south Florida had CD players (and I recall at least one with a TT also) with headphones available for sampling potential purchases. But they were rather small shops, the ones I went to most (Blue Note in Miami and All Books/Records in Fort Lauderdale) did not. Edit to add, contra Kevin above - these were good quality stereo-type CD players, no DiscMans and no $10 headphones either.
  11. Do many people care about this music? I really thought that the first tranche of recordings would elicit a response that was a little more ... robust, at least in terms of numbers. Do you like Paul Quinichette? According to Discogs he recorded only twice between 1960 and his death in 1984. Phil Schaap helped keep him working and here are 14 recordings never before heard of the Vice Pres. (And the Jazz Masters Trio is Sammy Price, Jo Jones and Quinichette - can't wait to hear those.) https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?search_type=advance&transliteration_status=false&f[collection_id_is][]=2137&f[description_source_search_facet_sms][]=Reel-to-reel&keywords[]=paul+quinichette&title_text[]=&resource_description[]=&indexes[]=&transcript[]=&supplemental_file[]=&collection_title[]=&op[]=&type_of_search[]=wildcard&type_of_field_selector[]=wildcard&sort=title_ss+asc&search_field=advanced&commit=Search I guess mileage really does vary.
  12. Ben Webster Tribute with Buddy Tate and Earle Warren among others ... nearly two hours: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/130129?u=t&keywords[]=ben webster&keywords[]= An hour of Howard McGhee with Sonny Redd on tenor: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/131116
  13. If you like the musicians who played at the West End and captured on these reels, you could listen every day and not hear it all.
  14. https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?current_flock=false&f[collection_id_is][]=2137&f[description_source_search_facet_sms][]=Reel-to-reel&myresources=0&request_is_xhr=false&search_field=advanced&search_type=advance&sort=title_ss+asc&user_ip=173.168.23.136 I have been waiting so long for something to appear on the Vanderbilt "Aviary" page (I've been in contact with the head librarian and had my doubts when they would get moving) and on a whim decided to check the site and lo and behold ... just a bit of the reels that were digitized earlier this year. George Kelly, the Countsmen, at least four Percy France shows, Paul Quinnichette, Hal Singer, Howard McGhee with Sonny Redd, three complete "WKCR Benefit" broadcasts, really too many to even fathom. And this is just a first tranche. This needs to be shouted from the rooftops so spread the word if you can! (The above search should bring up new uploads as it is keyed to "reel to reel" source.)
  15. Sally White (Sally's Place, Westport CT) would open up a promo copy and play it, then sell it to me for $8 instead of full boat on the list price. She was a fantastic lady and store owner with more jazz crammed into a space about the size of my living room than you can imagine.
  16. Only RSD release I ever lined up for purchasing. 👍 But then again I am the Gene Harris Fanatic. Green Smilie here.
  17. OTOH if he chases people out for violating the rules, you can bet his stock doesn't ever wander far from where he wants it.
  18. What an asshole, I am surprised that it even gets 1.9 stars. I am sure every single person on this forum who buys vinyl has found something of tremendous value (to them) that they had no idea existed, either browsing a brick and mortar or browsing online listings somewhere. And is it my bleary eyes or are there 500,000 pieces of vinyl and not a polybag in sight?
  19. In effect paying twice for dinner, if you eat elsewhere and are obligated to buy an entree during the set?
  20. How much Vanguard material wasn't issued on CD back in the 90s/2000s? I know the issue policy was haphazard with different dates being combined and shitte like that but I am wondering how much is "new". That will determine whether I open up the wallet for that set.
  21. I guess those outrageous prices are needed to cover the rent and the musician fees. If the family home in CT were still ours, I still wouldn't be going to Smoke, I don't think. Funny that he mentions the West End Gate ... I guess he moved there in the brief time that it existed. Of course, it was the West End for 20+ years before that, The Uptown Home For Swing run by Phil Schaap.
  22. Wondering how fans view the ASB these days? As a kid I watched the game religiously but now, and even pre-tie game, couldn't really be made to care. For the homer competition I think I watched one or two and that was it. I really view this week as an opportunity to get to bed earlier every single night. Like 9:30 at the latest instead of 10 or a bit past. Sort of like a west coast trip for the Sox.
  23. Well the day went as I hoped with the added bonus of the Yankees blowing the win after a big comeback in the top of the ninth. If it's any consolation, Verdugo probably makes that mistake of breaking in about once every two years. Bad timing for Yankee fans.
  24. Yeah, I am counting on the Sox continuing their Sunday dominance (1 loss on Sunday all season) plus facing another righty to go into the break strong. And hoping the O's do pull out the last game, to keep things tight in the division. Heading into the second half I guess if you have to play the Dodgers on the road, this is a good time to do it with all of their injuries. Losing to the Tigers with a four run lead in the 8th was brutal.
