MLB 2018: let the games begin!
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You're a lawyer Brad please enlighten me as to what law they have broken. They did not steal it. They found it on the side of the road. They are asking for compensation as a condition of return. There's no illegality here, only douchebaggery. If I ran the Sox I'd order up a new banner and tell them to go blow. Then they are free to sell it on eBay. Might even get a pretty good amount since only two would exist and one would be hanging at Fenway, when they have their little celebration. -

Nice to know every fan base has its share of douchebags: https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2018/09/19/the-red-sox-al-east-championship-banner-fell-off-a-truck-and-is-being-held-hostage/ -
Seems like it has been forever since the Hank Mobley thing came out and I was beginning to wonder if they had more in the archives or what when I was suddenly hipped to this: https://www.jazzarchief.nl/product/dexter-gordon-in-the-cave/ 1963 Dex! No Kenny Drew which would be the icing on the cake for me but still ... New Dex!!

Well, should he be bullpen bound if the Yankees get past the A's? Maybe Price should be held out from the starting rotation for a series, and Eovaldi should start in that case? He certainly matches well with Yankee hitters, better than the average lineup he's faced in his topsy-turvy season. And maybe Happ should be slotted 1 and 5 in the ALDS and see if one of the others can get them thru to the division series? He has handled the Sox lineup very well. In answer to your question the Sox bullpen is a steaming pile of shit and will remain that way. No one is trustworthy and someone will piss away too many games in October. -

Perhaps I should have said "as well situated as possible in the present circumstances" to keep the Red Sox from celebrating in NY. Speaking of 110 win pace, since I am hardly convinced they are a mortal lock for the World Series, I really hope they get to 110 wins because that would make Cora all-time for rookie manager wins, eclipsing Ralph Houk's first year as Yankee manager (and I'm going to guess that Houk inherited a juggernaut?). -

At least the Yankees are well-situated to keep the Red Sox from celebrating on their field - Happ, Severino (vs Price and we know how he does against the Yankees) and Tanaka lined up for these three. Speaking of Wild Card play-in games wouldn't Happ make the most sense as starter? Then Tanaka and Severino to start the ALDS if they get thru? I think Happ has been the most consistent starter they have. No idea though if the A's are better against lefties. This season is lining up as the ultimate what-if, had Judge not gotten hurt. Similar to the '75 series when Rice went down with a broken wrist on an HBP. Hard not to think he could have been the difference in the World Series that year. -
And at game's end. We were eight rows back from the dugout, dead center. The only huge disappointment is that Mom's boyfriend, Anthony Rizzo, got the day off (he came in for defense in the ninth). I don't have a lot of respect for Maddon, but that one tears it. He should be fired.

Thanks everybody. It hadn't been my request to go to Chicago but at the age of 84, Mom decided she wanted to see Wrigley and a few other sights one more time, and we set it up around my birthday. Here's the view from our room in the brand new Hotel Zachary.

Well this is awkward but what do you do when you've taken over the birthday monitoring from GA? So, um .... Happy Birthday to me Happy Birthday to me Happy Birthday dear Daniel Happy Birthday to me andenjoyyourtriptoChicagoforyourfirstvisittoWrigleysinceyouwerefourbutnotimeforDustyGroooooooooooove.

But they will be in the mix, and its a brand new season then, with Chapman and Judge back on the roster. -

So the A's have to play two games better than the Yankees to actually beat them out for #1 Wild Card (because the tie breaker is in Yankees favor). I didn't think it was likely but looking at the schedule, the Yanks have 3 with the Jays and 3 with the Orioles, but 4 at Tampa and home and home with the Red Sox. The A's have one more with the O's, and three this weekend in Tampa. But after that it's Angels, Twins (at home) and Mariners, Angels (on the road). That's a lot against teams not going anywhere, for a team riding a long hot streak. Aside from having so many on the road, the A's may have a shot here. -

Check out this asshat: So, old-schoolers: does this guy get a pitch in the ear next at-bat/season, for standing at the plate, then heaving his bat in the air, then taking the slowest trip around the bases this side of Big Papi? I say yes. In fact, if the Rays could use Brian Daubach for target practice for the rest of his career after he did nothing but come over from first base to defend Pedro, I say this semi-pro Panthers club should throw at this guy every time, every game, forever. -

Random thought: In the era of video review, "The Flip" is consigned to the dustbin of history. In about two minutes. Foot flat on plate. Glove in between legs. Tag was on back foot. Discuss. -
Serena Williams vs The World

Previous Serena Williams meltdowns have not involved claims of sexism or denial of receiving coaching. They've involved threats of physical harm to lines persons, and accusing chair umpires of being "haters" who are "ugly inside". Even the WTA draws the line at that. -

It supports her claims and excuses. And again, this is the Women's Tennis Association. It is dedicated to supporting players. Its entire purpose is to support players. Did anyone expect it to tell Serena that she owes the world and especially her opponent an apology? I saw something last night about Andy Roddick saying that he has said worse and never suffered a game penalty. What is missing from that statement is, did he previously get dinged for coaching, then smash his racquet? If not, then there could be no game penalty in the first place. -

Martina Navratilova, no friend of the patriarchy, has it right: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/10/opinion/martina-navratilova-serena-williams-us-open.html?smtyp=cur&smid=tw-nytimes If, in fact, the guys are treated with a different measuring stick for the same transgressions, this needs to be thoroughly examined and must be fixed. But we cannot measure ourselves by what we think we should also be able to get away with. In fact, this is the sort of behavior that no one should be engaging in on the court. There have been many times when I was playing that I wanted to break my racket into a thousand pieces. Then I thought about the kids watching. And I grudgingly held on to that racket. -

It supports their superstar and her allegations. They even come out and say coaching should be allowed, as in, if we had fixed this rule previously, Ms superstar wouldn't have been in this position. It's an ex post facto excuse for the penalty that got it all started. I'd love to see someone, anyone challenge Williams on her claim that she never cheats, never gets coaching during a match but her coach says he does it every single point. Who is lying? Who has motive to lie? -

Oh my god stop the presses! The WTA supports their superstar. And only asks "whether different standards are applied" to men and women. This does nothing for your argument whatsoever. And if they want what happened to never happen again, tell their superstar to stop acting like the world revolves around her. -

Honestly this assumes facts not in evidence. I hear James Blake says he did worse. OK. It takes a lot more than one person to make me believe there is any serious discrepancy in application of rules to male and female players. More to the point this isn't about men and women. This is about one woman, who hates when the rules are applied to her. She's really close to having a lifetime lowlights reel to rival Mac's. And she screams sexism because that's what it's always about as far as she is concerned. bottom line for me: Whether anyone has gotten a "warning" rather than a penalty, the rules are the rules. Umpires have leeway to call it down the middle and enforce it without hesitation or to give "warnings". FWIW the Times describes the chair umpire as a well-known stickler for the rules. https://www.weeklystandard.com/jonathan-v-last/serena-williams-u-s-open-final-controversy-she-got-what-she-deserved -

Well if Blake says he's done it and not been penalized, we have to scratch off racism and can only go with sexism as the reason that Serena got penalized. Progress! Or we can just read the applicable section of the rules and say that Blake is lucky he wasn't penalized for whatever he said that was "worse". : Under Article III, Section P, “verbal abuse” is defined as “a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator or other person that implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive.” The section says a player is subject to a fine up to $20,000 for each violation.
