MLB 2018: let the games begin!
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
With all these trades going on days before the 'deadline' will there be anything to report by 4 pm on the 31st? Not that ESPN and MLB Network won't fill up the broadcast time with a lot of air but it seems like there's a trend toward earlier trades and this year the biggest names are already moved. -

Well that was never a goal of mine but I suspect I am very near complete (forgetting MCA releases I am not concerned about). Didn't think in terms of complete but I am guessing they have dug out everything that could be released in the vaults, since there was only one "new" CD issued in the time since he died. -

Well comps are going to be comps; the great thing about the Kent compilation is that most of it is music Kent released after he went to ABC, taking tracks from the late 50s to early 60s and dubbing in new instrumentation. Ace issued many of them without the dubs that were meant to 'modernize' the sound. Which left me to go out and buy a lot of Kent 45s to hear them as released, too. -

Love Ace and their approach. They are definitely in the "new to CD" camp but that is fine for me. As for BB King, they did a series of every Crown LP reissued in full with extras that doubled the run time. Awesome series. -

They already did. Six pitchers held them to two runs and the Rays took the rubber game 3-2. -

He's had a number of outstanding starts this year. Very high K to BB ratio. Yankees are almost certainly better off not facing him today. -

Sox just got Eovaldi from the Rays for a 25 year old AAA pitcher who sounds like he has potential but its four years to AAA since he was drafted. Eovaldi has been scratched from today's game against the Yanks so it sounds like a done deal. He's had two Tommy Johns so far but a WHIP of .98 in 10 starts this year is pretty nice. Wouldn't mind former Yankee pitching the Sox past them this season. -

I do not grasp the Yankees deal for Britton. Two of your top 15 prospects for a two month rental for incremental improvement to a major team strength? Don't they need a starter a tad bit more - who would impact the final results in 2018 a great deal more? I have no idea if the Sox were close in the bidding but to keep him away from Boston is almost the bigger impact than the outs he would deliver. The Sox need a bullpen that's longer than it is; the Yankees don't need the help in the first place. The other possibility is that they aren't being honest about Chapman's knee and they needed some extra insurance. -

Back to the DL. He supposedly aggravated the groin on the passed ball. I would hope that when he returns he runs his ass off on every play. -

Yeah but the Yanks are afraid of missing those swings on mistake pitches that he might launch for homers. That's basically what he brings to the park, and Austin Romine doesn't. Or not as much of a threat. -

I'd like to amend my prior comment that as a catcher, Gary Sanchez makes an excellent DH. Actually, as a ballplayer, he makes an excellent slug. So are the Yankees going to bench him for lack of hustle or are they going to save him some embarrassment and claim that his groin injury isn't really 100% so that is why he took his sweet time on the final play? -

The Dodgers have Seager at SS and don't possibly have a need. Seager is a star under team control for four years. On the other hand their new acquisition has been re-tweeting photoshop images of himself in a Yankees uniform. Gregorius has turned himself into a hitter (esp. at Yankee Stadium) and is a much better defender but I can't see the Yankees not coming across with the money for talent like that who will be entering his age 27 season next year. And whoever takes Gregorious off their hands will probably find out he doesn't hit as many homers away from the short porch. -

And apparently the landing spot now. A very logical move by LA, a rental makes perfect sense with Seager looking to be ready to go in 2019. This should definitely make the Dodgers the favorites in the West. -
My mother (just turned 83) has had high blood pressure for a long time - on medication, never in my opinion "stabilized". But she doesn't take it very seriously. She's also terrible about taking the medication that's prescribed. The annoying thing was that when she had gallbladder issues earlier this year and had to be admitted, with their regular administration of the drugs, she was stable and consistent the whole time she was hospitalized. To connect this to your situation, Scott, a month or two ago she mentioned in passing that she had taken her BP and it was 190. Freaked my sister out. Mom's approach was, I'll check it again later today and see where it is. I did some googling and told her she was on the cusp of what I'll call a Severe BP Event (tm). Yours, on the other hand, definitely qualifies as SBPE. Glad you're stable and back on the beam. (Mom's BP was closer to normal the next time she checked. But its still not very stable because when I am there I will hear that it was low (at least she knows not to do very much under those circumstances) and then its high again. Like I said, not controlled by medication but she won't take it regularly or follow up. She's 83 so I guess we're playing with house money anyway.)

Ron McMaster Retires From Capitol Mastering
Dan Gould replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
What is up with him referring to himself in the third person? I noticed it the first time and went looking for an errant quote mark but then he says it again. "Ron doesn't bounce back like he did." "Ron just needs a little more time." Weird. -

Supposedly the Phils are about to land Machado, and I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth as no one needs to face the Yankees with an even lengthier middle of the lineup. But why are the Phils upping their offer on a rental? This is not a now-or-never roster. Seven players are 26 or younger. Bright future and apparently a pretty strong group of prospects behind them. Machado is signing with the Yanks for 2019 its practically a done deal. But the Phillies giving up a lot for two months makes zero sense to me. -

He'll get in but it shouldn't be any sort of slam dunk. 3-5 years on ballot. Which is ridiculous because Schilling has a much better case and has waited that long already. -

Matheney bounced as manager by the Cards. Apparently very rare for this organization to take such a move in the middle of a season but the results have been really lacking. And I was reading recently that he and Dexter Fowler don't speak, and some veteran pitcher has been riding a rookie, old-school style. When the rook was asked if it was helping him, he said "no idea. Next question." Now I'm an old-school kinda guy so if someone wants to Crash Davis the guy, I wouldn't object. But I think it needs to stay in-house and not become a question for the media to ask about. As for my Sox I think I am going to enter the post-ASG with a little trepidation. Eduardo Rodriguez came out of yesterday's game with an ankle strain after a 1B collision (thank God he looked like he was walking normally off the field), and Devers is on the DL with a shoulder issue and Benitiendi is on the bereavement list. Those are serious losses especially Benitiendi, a huge cog of the offense since June 1 or so. Good that Benitiendi won't miss as many games as he would have at a different point of the season.
