  1. There are 3 members of the bullpen who have been successful closers. The Sox have one. The Yankee bullpen is going to be a major differentiation with the Red Sox over the course of the season. And JD Martinez already looks like he has Green Monster-itis. Like Jack Clark, the eyes go huge, the swing goes longer, and he never produces like he is "supposed to".
  2. Yankee fans in panic mode certainly is entertaining but jeez, its ten games into the season. Seven back in the loss column - if it got to that point after this series - is nothing this early. If it were post- ASB, yeah that's a tougher row to hoe. But there's 94% of the season to go.
  3. Back to those seemingly obscure Red Holloways from the latter years of his career.
  4. We hardly ever see him anymore but he'd never skip a Happy Birthday thread so how can we skip his? HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVAN WHEREVER YOU ARE!
  5. Didn't realize when I got it that they really meant After Dark as the theme, not just the title. Lovely set of late-night music for the early morning.
  6. Funny I definitely know it when I hear it. Must be like porn that way.
  7. Hell Yeah, have enjoyed that for many years. I'm just glad to hear several new recordings by Red, it seemed like his domestic releases slowed significantly in the 2000s, until I came across one recording on jazzmessengers.com and that made me search more actively.
  8. Started to find out around Christmas time how many recordings Red made in his later years on European labels, this may be one of the best I've found. "Teach Me Tonight" as a lowdown dirty blues is nothing short of a perfect combination of artist and tune. How come no one ever thought of that before? Also reminds me of Blue Hour and makes me lament that while Red recorded with Gene once or twice, they never combined for an hour of this type of programming. That would have been as perfect as Gene and Stan were.
  9. Shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth as it apparently is now at the local PO and I should have it this afternoon, but how the heck does it get scanned for the first time at Ybor City outside Tampa? It never each reached the NYC regional distribution center.
  10. Must be a great 64th Birthday Allen - if it only since it's not being spent in Maine.
  11. I would hope that stamps are valid for the face value for as long as the country issuing them exists. If this is common, I wonder how Swedish postmen feel about having to count up so many stamps of so many denominations to verify that the postage matches the cost.
  12. What the hell is it with overseas shipments getting thru to the domestic delivery side? Package from Japan hasn't moved in NYC since March 29 - six freaking days!
  13. Well I am very intrigued by this mention on oldies.com about Jimmy "T99" Nelson: "From the mid-60s he worked outside the music business until he was recorded with Arnett Cobb’s band by Roy Ames in 1971 for Home Cooking Records." But there is zero mention of any such recording on discogs, and eBay and Amazon are empty too. Would definitely like to hear that one.
  14. Well then my new purchase is welcome - Chubby Jackson 7 featuring Nat and Arnett. $11 shipped thru Amazon Marketplace. There's one more copy available.
  15. It's fantastic news but there's nothing specific about label or release date and even searching by this supposed early release of one track finds nothing. If anyone finds more specific info in the coming months I hope they post. This is every bit as important - actually for me, more important - than the new Grant Green. (Anyone else know of The Wild Man from Texas on Home Cooking Records? Released in 1989 but recorded in the early 70s, I presume also self-funded - it sounds like Arnett subbing for Fathead on Atlantic.) https://www.discogs.com/Arnett-Cobb-The-Wild-Man-From-Texas/master/666979
  16. If its Jeter vs Andre Dawson, I'm taking Andre Dawson's word: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/andre-dawson-blasts-derek-jeter-for-being-unprofessional/ar-AAvlnUt?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=U220DHP
  17. Edited at the same time you were posting. Of course someone sees my foolishness.
  18. There are rules about neutral backgrounds behind pitchers. You couldn't get away with putting someone behind the pitcher with the intent to distract the hitter. Thanks for the reminder though of this classic sitcom episode. Nearly as amusing as the "As god is my witness I thought turkeys could fly" episode.
  19. Yes it was Wee Willie Keeler who said it, and I frankly find Brad's attitude that this is some sort of corruption of the game to be ... appalling. Teams have used shifts since, I'm guessing, before Brad was born. This is somehow different? The shift used against David Ortiz had a fourth outfielder, just playing a little shallow to be able to throw him out if a grounder/liner were hit right at the fielder. Same thing. When I look at the alignment used against Gallo, its ridiculous to think that if he had the skill to push a ball thru just left of where a shortstop would be, he's on 2B easy. A hard groundball or liner goes to the LF wall and its a triple and maybe inside-the-park homer. But if Brad thinks this should be outlawed somehow, uh, yeah NO.
  20. Pigpen hanging Larry's listening to cool tunes:
  21. The themed samples from the 90s held together very well but none compare to my personal compilation disc, Sidewinder and Sons.
  22. I'm embarrassed to say until recently I had slept on that Storyville set (had the TCB for many years). And me, a Dex-a-holic.
