  1. Help me wish Pete B a very Happy 60th B-Day!
  2. That track is not supposed to be punchy and its one of the most memorable tracks in Blue Note history as far as I am concerned. Is there a wasted note by Dex, Byrd or KD? It boggles the mind to think this track is an imposition on you as a listener.
  3. It's interesting and a little disconcerting that we currently know of no pipeline sets. I know there was encouraging talk reported during the garage sale but do they really have literally no solid plans at this time? Are they depending on the Savory and Wilson sets to finance the next one(s) and have to wait and see? Or could this really be it and they didn't want that news out yet?
  4. Hanley OPS'd over .900 in April. He falls off (severely) in April and gets shit-canned? Let's say he was riding the pines like Swihart was and ought to be. With Pedroia back, your right handed pinch hitter is Eduardo Nunez instead of Hanley Ramirez. That is dumb fucking roster management.
  5. There's no loss in losing Swihart to waivers. He's replacement level. Before he fell off so much Hanley could have been Cooperstown-bound. Even keeping him the lineup he wasn't hurting the offense very much and he was still punishing mistakes occasionally. He gets hot he carries the team for two weeks. And if he was headed for a vesting option, so what? The team can afford it. And didn't Moreland sign for just a year? They'll need someone for 1b next year.
  6. So Pedroia comes off the DL today and ... they DFA Hanley Ramirez???? WTFH? I know Hanley isn't having a great season to date though there was a period where he was as hot a hitter as ever. In fact I remember seeing a reference to him being in a contract year. And they are doing this to keep from releasing Blake Swihart, out of options and to all indications at the very best a AAAA player. Third string catcher and with a handful of starts at DH. Seriously, WHTFH? Maybe Hanley is done. Maybe he isn't. There's no reason not find out if he gets hot again. Maybe he gets hot and flipped to another contender at the deadline. You could get a AAAA prospect to replace Swihart, that's for damn sure. Now I am wondering whether Hanley had makable incentives to make an option year vest if they kept him on the team. But this is dumb, dumb, dumb and not only because Hanley is better than he's shown to date, but Moreland will get exposed as every day 1B especially vs lefties. Which Hanley can still hit.
  7. It depends on the music. Gene Harris Trio +1 was released on LP first if I am not mistaken, and actually does a fade on the last track. Most people who have heard it love this combo of Gene and Mr. Turrentine, even the ones who think Blue Hour is a "snooze". I think everyone who does enjoy it would not at all mind another 2-3 songs, had it been issued on CD in the first place.

    Gigi Gryce

Listening to Stompin' Volume 20 (great Brit series of un or underheralded blues/r&b players) and came across Freddie Mitchell, Preachin' on the Rock n Roll label. Killer sax over romping big band, and surprise, surprise, the notes say "Fellow Florida-born jazzman Gigi Gryce's modernish Preachin is a well-chosen vehicle ..." I couldn't find anything in Rat Race Blues to verify, not even sure if he has credit for a tune called "Preachin'" - does anyone know? There is a label reproduction in the liners but its in a field of them and hard to read. Might even say 'G G Gryce'. Supposedly the label had one release, and it was incorporated in 1955 in NYC, that would fit I think. Anyone? Bueller?
  9. About three years ago I was inspired to put together a comp I labelled "Gospel Jazz" - wish I'd thought of Baptist Beat as the title instead - two discs worth but I didn't save a playlist but I do enjoy this style a great deal. Is it OK to reference explicitly gospel tunes performed by jazz musicians? Then: Battle Hymn of The Republic, by Gene Harris with Stanley Turrentine, on Gene Harris Trio + 1 Just a Closer Walk With Thee, 20th Concord Festival All-Stars (The Ray Brown Trio with Red Holloway and Sweets Edison, Gene really tears it up)
  10. Seems to me its a short list to begin with, and this limitation makes it even shorter.
  11. Jazz fans will always remember Cedar, but you apparently do not remember the thread, of which you were a major contributor.
  12. I'd kill to hear just one or two tracks from the Gene Harris/Grant Green session.

  14. I don't know but it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer is showing how he arranges his money clip with the biggest denomination on the outside and Jerry replies 'It's a $5".
  15. A little birdie helped me out with Oil Can and I am kinda glad. Slick just doesn't cut it for me. Too seventies, too funkified. I'm glad if Grant gets more attention from these but it's really not my cuppa. I think I'll enjoy the other one more, but still not listen too often to the long jams.
  16. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LARRY!
  17. I don't think I've ever heard Monk's speaking voice before. Thanks Brad.
  18. You can't cover two hands with one glove, kids.
  19. I don't know, maybe because people who listen to anything from swing thru, say, hard and post-bop, know, recognize and enjoy GAS standards? Also, barf to your last sentence.
  20. Interesting fact: Yankees are 18-7 at home while the Red Sox are 17-8 on the road. And since they are tied, the Sox and Yankees are almost indistinguishable home vs away (Sox 11-4 Yankees 10-5). I don't know when it starts to even out but that's 10 extra home games the Sox have coming.
  21. I've pre-ordered too. Very good news; it sure took a long time.
  22. Some will call it gut-check time for me its check-out time. Won't watch won't know won't care. But with any luck at all whenever they go back to Fenway it will be to chants of Oh-VER-RAY-TED.
  23. Pomeranz is awful so far. There's no reason why he should be expected to outpitch anyone let alone the hotter-than-hot opposition's ace. Their only hope is that the baseball gods finally say ENOUGH.
  24. Pomeranz and Price go Tuesday and Wednesday = Yankees alone in first place by Thursday morning. Porcello gives them a shot on Thursday to leave in a tie but Sabathia is actually their most consistent pitcher so, probably not.
