Flip the situation around, Mo does his usual thing, and you get how I expected to feel waking up to what has turned out to be a glorious morning. I went to bed thinking we'd been beat on a Brett-fucking-Gardner home run. What were the odds of that? Apparently just a little lower than a Mo-malfunction. I'll happily take it but the fact is that this team will desperately need Bedard to pitch as well as he ever has, and even then they don't match up with the Yankee bullpen.

Against a team that is clearly in a slump at the plate? A team which is last in almost every offensive category on the planet? Translation from Goodie-speak: Our offense sucks, and everyone knows it! How dare you rub it in when you're beating us so bad!! Take pity on us for Christ sake or we're totally justified in throwing at your batters!!! WAAAAAHHHHH!
-
Goodie is being utterly ridiculous. You want them to just play the game? Then take your whipping like a man and don't go plunking batters, then stepping forward as if to say "wtf are you going to do about it?" Then again, for a AAAA offense like the Giants, maybe a six run deficit with four frames to go is insurmountable, and the "mercy rule" applies. After all that's what, nearly three games worth of offense for them? As for that championship let's not forget that if not for an historically disastrous collapse by San Diego, the Giants don't even sniff the playoffs, and Goodie is still wondering whether the Giants will manage to win in his lifetime.

I don't think getting to Sabathia a couple of times means anything going forward. If anything it increases the chance that Sabathia will shut them down at some point this season and if that happens in October the Red Sox will be in deep trouble.

The 70s Twofer Jazz Reissue LP
Dan Gould replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Yeah, Soulville. I think that was my second Webster LP, after Ben & Sweets hooked me on the two leaders for all eternity. I know its a minority view but I thought then, and still do, that the combination of Ben and that nameless piano player was absolute perfection. -
Why? Yes they are tied but take away the flukey head-to-head matchup and the Yankees are way better against the rest of the league. This whole "woe is the Yankees, how can we ever compete against Boston" is getting tiresome. They are equally as likely to win the division, pennant, and World Series, and oh by the way, A-Rod returns to the lineup in a couple of weeks. And considering that flukey head-to-head result, I fully expect a revision toward the mean with the Yankees winning two of three in Fenway and leaving with the lead. What pisses me off is that last night's game was managed as if Francona wanted to be sure to fall into a tie for first place. Why else would he go with the last man in the bullpen to pitch the sixth inning of a tie game against a good team? Why would he give work to that worthless pile of pig snot Andrew Miller, still with a winnable game on the line? Jesus Christ the guy took 71 pitches to record 8 outs and made sure that the game out of hand. Maybe the Red Sox don't score against Masterson and the Indian bullpen anyway, but Francona really fucked this game away. They better not lose the division by a game.

The 70s Twofer Jazz Reissue LP
Dan Gould replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I had many of the same two-fers people have mentioned however, they were bought used in the late 80s - early 90s when I was also finding used OJCs, and Liberty-issue BNs. So I don't have quite the same fond memories of the 70s two-fers, with probably one exception: the Savoy two-fer was my first exposure to Bird. -

Someone should snap this up! -
Uh, its your team that has trimmed the lead by two games to the slim margin that now separates the teams, with Boston facing Masterson behind Bedard while the Yankees go for the sweep. I'd say there are better than even chances the Yankees arrive in Boston as co-division leaders.

All that talk about Burnett, and tonight the Yankees give him 13 runs of support in the first three innings ... and he still can't get the win, leaving two outs shy of pitching five innings, throwing 85 pitches, 13 hits, seven runs. That's just brutal. And I'd say a pointed message from Girardi that even with such a huge lead in the wild card, and only a game out of first, he's not going to carry him to a desperately needed win. At least Ellsbury hit another walkoff, this time a blast to the CF bleachers, to keep the Red Sox in front for another day. Bedard tomorrow so all bets are off.

Glad everyone enjoyed the BFT so much. It was a pleasure putting it together, and it flowed much better than my original conception which included songs from Phil Collins' big band record, and Charlie Watts' jazz dabblings. Might have been interesting from a BFT perspective but not something anyone would have kept around for listening pleasure, as HP is. So its much more satisfying to hear such feedback.

what's your flavor ice cream?
Dan Gould replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No wonder you and me both had such stunted growth. Seriously though aside from coffee or coffee-based ice cream flavors, I'll always say yes to chocolate/peanut butter or Cookies & Cream. Publix used to have a great frozen yogurt flavor, lemon with lemon cookie bits. Awesomely refreshing but in their last revision of their offerings/packaging they dropped it. Very annoying. -
Because demoting Burnett could irreparably harm the relationship? Because no one knows how useful Burnett would be as a reliever? Because he's making 17 million dollars? Because Nova is making $400,000 and will 'do anything to help the team win' in hopes of continuing to earn a major league salary and more?
-
It would be great if people contacted Schaap and told him they'd pay half since its autographed by Wynton, or $250 more if he paid to have it removed. It really is a mind-boggling approach to marketing collectibles.
-
I'm not surprised you'd call it an insult, I'd just call it a non-sequitor.
-
Then you probably also didn't hear "Clemens and Hurst or expect the worst" either.
-
And that's just it - good pitching is supposed to beat good hitting. Its the story of the Yankees post-season from 2001-2008, and will probably be the story of the Red Sox 2011 unless Bedard sucks it up while staying healthy for three months, which is quite a challenge for that guy. speaking of which, I'll bet dollars to donuts that Tito doesn't throw Bedard to the wolves, he'll slot him in for Thursday's finale against the Indians and move Lester back to take the ball for game 1 against the Yankees Friday night.
-
I can't see the Red Sox winnning a seven game series against the Phils when the difference in the 3 & 4 starters could be as wide as this could be. For this season to end memorably Bedard has to somehow stay healthy, embrace the pressure, and do his part to win a championship. If three is Lackey and four is Wake, this team would have to hit like the '27 Yankees, and do it against some great pitchers, to make up for it.
-
Against the Phils or Giants pitching? Highly doubtful ... and Texas has improved its bullpen drastically. The AL East champion and the Wild Card may be equally disadvantaged: A pretty good Rangers team defending their pennant, or beat the Tigers while facing Verlander twice in five games. Neither series will be fun.
-
Buchholz out for the season with stress fracture in back? Looks like we're going to have to put an awful lot of pressure on the narrow, unwilling shoulders of Erik Bedard. Can you make the post-season and win it all with two starters? Refresh my memory - how did Spahn and Sain and pray for rain work out in the end? I know how Hurst and Clemens and the rest are lemons worked out ...
-
I said its "one you got" not "the one you got". Big difference.
