clear channel cuts hundreds
Dan Gould replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
So is there anything legal you think companies shouldn't do as long as it makes money for shareholders? Read your question again and the answer is obvious. So why don't we turn it back to you and say 'what legal things companies can do in the interests of shareholders should they be prevented from doing?" Oops, there it is, as clear as day. Declaring something legal to be "illegal" because the left doesn't like it. There you have it, liberal thought in all its freedom-hating and free-market hating glory. -

You yourself state that they incurred the debt from using highly leveraged buyouts to build up the business. On what basis can you claim that Rush's contract is some sort of onerous burden? Reality: Rush is a huge profit center for the company. They might make a greater profit if it salary wasn't as high but how can anyone possibly doubt that the company makes his salary back and much more from the syndication and commercial sales from his show? I guess if they can't make back the 20 billion dollars from his show, he's a failure, right? A bad business decision, a contract forcing their hand to fire hundreds of other jocks. What a joke. -

Fantastic. One of the resident leftists has taken note of my signature and is offended, because demonizing the opposition is perfectly fine if you are a lefty, but ... well, you know the rest. On what basis? Do you believe that no one (or perhaps no right-winger) should be paid such a salary? Or do you really believe that Rush doesn't make Clear Channel so much money that his salary isn't acceptable to the ownership because they make more than that in selling air time? Do you think they have set up a charity for talented right-wing talk radio hosts, and just want to enrich Rush regardless of the consequences for their corporation? Or maybe you think its just unfair that he should be paid so much and so many dime-a-dozen announcers should get pink slips? Cry me a river. -

Uh, sorry, Aloc but held privately or traded publicly, there are shareholders in the corporation and their interests are paramount. And their interests are in cutting costs. And as to LW's comment: If its dreck they program, its because dreck gets ratings. You know, the way the rest of the culture sucks but people suck it up like there's no tomorrow. And, to say that the dreck is so bad it needs no introduction is to ignore what Clear Channel is doing: Reducing employee costs by using their remaining announcers to record intros and outros. No Clear Channel listener will notice a difference unless it really bothers them that their local station doesn't do "remotes" and they've never met the disc jockeys because they don't live in the community. -

Yeah, how dare they try to run the business in the interests of the shareholders? What kind of corporation does that? Oh that's right - all of them do. And should. With 20 billion dollars in debt, are they supposed to not look for ways to cut costs? -

I guess my image wasn't showing up for you. Its Austin Powers, from The Spy Who Shagged Me.

If I may borrow a phrase: "Ouch, baby. Very ouch."

Ooh! Ooh! I hope it's me. I hope it's me. If you've lurked or posted around here long enough, you'd be sure of who I was talking about. Talk about manning up, stop being a pussy and identify this supposedly defective human being. And if its me, a pre-emptive hale and hearty F.U.

I think this is great its coming out so soon but I have to wonder about a set where all of the recordings are PD in Europe. Just as the Uptown Mingus and others, you know someone will put out the music using these transfers for a tiny fraction of the price. How much will Mosaic be hurt by that? I'm sure Michael attempted to quantify it some way.

Harry Belafonte on Eyewitness News
Dan Gould replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
guess you haven't been listening to him all these years! very reliable sources say he was NOT asleep. he was waiting for his signal but could not hear it. I've heard his bullshit many times, Valerie. Anyone who expresses such hatred against black conservatives (and in racial terms like "house negro") is beneath contempt. As for your "very reliable sources" why would he close his eyes then? He's done too many of these interviews to count, you don't watch the guy in the studio for a signal? He didn't think to turn up his hearing aid? -
Finally looked on AMG - the Swiss Radio Days releases were from the 1960 band with Shorter. I don't see any indication this has been issued officially but as it turns out a FLAC copy was posted almost three years ago on Dime. So no need for a 64 KB download. But if you don't do Dime or missed it, this is an excellent set.

Making the next album: CD or MP3/FLAC only?
Dan Gould replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Is there any reason, based on the number of "CD" comments here and the whopping 18 votes in the poll, to believe you need more than 200 for sale on the web? You mention how many boxes of CDs you have in your attic, isn't this new plan of 1000 copies just another recipe for more boxes in the attic? I strongly encourage to stick with your original alternative: very limited run of CDs for those who prefer them, send some to radio stations, MP3 and FLAC downloads. -

Never has he come off so intelligently or politically astute. -
This is available for FLAC download from Wolfgang's Vault. Looks like another worthwhile search is for "blues" as there are some airchecks of some early R&B, a Muddy Waters concert and others of interest. I also notice the Messengers set with Golson and Timmons but I am guessing this was out on CD in the Swiss Radio Days series? Guess I'll need to check to make sure. Can never have enough Morgan, sayeth the Mogie Man.

I must say its ironic, given how Gryce felt about the industry and the way it treats musicians, that we are celebrating the reissue of his music at such a remarkably cheap price. How can there be any question as to the illegitimacy of this reissue? Then again, he's dead and buried so we might as well enjoy what we can get.

Mosaic to release next Jazz Icons DVD set
Dan Gould replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think its great that the project continues and that they are licensing the French TV archive but I'd still prefer that they sell them individually. Not an RRK fan (shocking!) and I'd probably watch the Trane once. The other 4 I'd definitely want though. -

Bluesnik was the album that really solidified my interest in Kenny Drew, iirc. -

Not at all, because that "certain point" is where you can grow to understand how to love somebody who does things you don't understand, much less agree with. Believe me, kids will do that to you in a big way... I'm sure, except that my kids are short, hairy, walk on all fours, and don't speak clearly. So the apple didn't fall far from the tree, eh? No, they got that from their mother.
