  1. If you're going home for the winter, is it best not to be the first team so dismissed? Should that make the Red Sox washout any easier to take?
  2. Cute, but think about how different that scene would look today, if she found it by opening a Word Doc. I mean, Jack had to work at creating that masterpiece of psychosis.
  3. I wasn't being rude, I was being honest. What exactly makes her somewhat famous? A couple of obscure jazz LP covers and inspiring a Miles tune? I can't find her on Wikipedia, and I don't see any sites on Google. She was a dancer and occasional actress who was married to Miles. Now she works as a hostess in a restaurant. Some people know who she is but why do you think the general clientele of the restaurant would know her?
  4. Thom's never wrong and I have to say I am now very curious about this recording. I'm about the most straightahead mainstream guy here (possibly the only difference between me and our old friend Hardbop is that I enjoy jazz organ, don't have an unhealthy fascination with Wynton, and don't use the words "ducat" or "tome") but if, as Da Bastards say, the pianist "seems to ground the record strongly, holding it inside a bit more than usual for Lowe" I'd like to hear more from this record. Too bad I have no money for buying anything as unimportant as a CD.
  5. Let me guess the answer: do you think most patrons know, let alone care who was married to Miles Davis?
  6. [Control] + [C] puts whatever you have highlighted on your "clipboard". [Control] + [V] pastes it into wherever you put your cursor. Its easier to do than highlighting, left-clicking, and choosing "copy". BTW, [Control] + [X] deletes what you've highlighted, and doesn't put it on the clipboard.
  7. With a day's rest and tomorrow off too, you have to go to your best pitcher for another inning. Nathan's homer rate was up and his ERA was far less impressive than it has been, but its not like he's had a Lidge-type season. I'm just lovin that the Yankees blew their chance and now we go to the 11th. Hopefully we'll watch Burnett eat that stinkin' pie he was surely preparing because no one gets it in the end.
  8. Well, at least Nathan didn't lose it, and the question becomes whether or not the Yankees go to Rivera for another inning. Girardi was quoted as saying Rivera would get four outs in a game, no more. They've burned through Joba, Hughes, Coke and Rivera otherwise. In other words, the shit that occupies the rest of the Yankee bullpen is all that's left.
  9. I don't think there is a single program, but like I said, you can output PDF files from a scanner such as mine (but a flatbed like mine would take a long time) then use the software I mentioned to convert PDF to Word. The only time consuming thing there would be you'd open each PDF file separately to convert it, creating 350 word docs. Then you'd have to copy and paste 349 times to bring it together into one Word Doc.
  10. What a brutal way to lose and fall behind 0-2. Holliday, brought in for his bat, drops a routine liner with two outs in the ninth and the next thing you know, the Dodgers are storming the field. I'm just glad Loretta came up with the hit and the game doesn't intrude on the Sox - Angels start. While I picked the Cards all the way to the Series, so this would royally fuck up my results in the pool, I can't say I'd be remotely disappointed to see LaRussa and his ego, not to mention Smoltz and Lugo, out on their asses early. The reality is that a Red Sox-Dodger Series would be plenty entertaining if it comes to pass, with all of the storylines that would come with it.
  11. Funny, the three examples cited all ended up with the "underdog" winning. And in 2004, the Yankees hadn't lost an important series to the Red Sox in about forever. That didn't turn out so well either. But I do hope you are right - the Red Sox have beaten the Angels in the post-season the last four times they met, in 1986, 2004, 2007 and 2008. Let's see if they can make it five.
  12. Just got one from an email with a Vietnam domain: so I decided I had to have some fun. This was my reply: Unfortunately, the typical scammer may not even speak or read English and has purchased a series of emails to be sent in a particular order, so while I will probably get a response, it will be non-sensical in the context of what I wrote. That's what happened the last time, when I got a proposal that I stand as the living relative of a businessman who died in a plane crash, and I told him I am that businessman's son and my family has been searching for the money he squirreled a way in a Hong Kong bank, and thank you so much for contacting me, what an incredible coincidence ....
  13. Very nice piece, Mark, and a well-deserved honor to Mr. Belgrave. And a great track that makes me want to go to the website and purchase some discs.
  14. Since my scanner is flatbed and pretty damn slow, I'd probably be faster if I re-typed it. And I'm a fast typer.
  15. Last year I thought Brian Giles was a fucking idiot for refusing a trade to Boston and a chance at a ring. Turns out he's just a girlfriend beating world class asshole. Report here. Video here
  16. I generally set my scanner to output TIFs, then after the editing and processing I usually just save to Word documents, but some people prefer saving to PDFs. I think the PDF-direct output is for people who just need a permanent record but don't intend to edit (receipts, accounting stuff and contracts tend to fall in this category). Yeah, I'd still like to know what the "PDF-direct" looks like in Dan's case: embedded image or text. Microtek ScanWizard 5. We got it from my wife's Aunt who got it as part of a free "bundle" when she bought her PC and had no use for it. Like I said, if I scan text like a birth certificate, the default setting for the output is PDF. I've never tried to output a PDF when I scan a photograph or photo + text. And if there was any question, the Scansoft software did a perfect job converting PDF to an editable file, keeping images intact and text boxes editable.
  17. Define "reasonable" and I'm your man.
  18. Sue Ellen Mishke was the braless O'Henry heir. Sidra (Teri Hatcher) was the "they're real and they're spectacular" girl. But I think I know where you're coming from. That would be why I said she "epitomized" real and spectacular.
  19. I move that Johnny and Goodie be stricken from the pool as they did not submit prior the beginning of the playoffs, in fact they submitted after Game 1 of one NLDS was over.
  20. Impossible. PDF encapsulates a description of a document that includes text, fonts, images, and 2D vector graphics which compose the document. Scanning a page results in a bitmap (image). Scansoft PDF Converter 4 takes PDF files and converts to Word Doc or Publisher and other formats. For my scanner, when scanning printed pages, the default output options is PDF.
  21. Well the link to his sole appearance is right there at the top. Its certainly worth seven minutes.
  22. How the fuck does a single game indicate how a series should turn out? The Twins have won 17 of their last 21. You know....I was almost going to root for the BoSox, too. OH NO! What will we ever do?
  23. Here's a shock: I just discovered Malice was like a warm-up for future Seinfeld guest actors: Tobin Bell played the serial killer that has nothing to do with the main plot of the movie and was in The Old Man episode as the Bleeker Bob's counterman who tells Kramer and Newman their LPs aren't worth squat. And, I just spotted Brenda Strong in a tiny role as a secretary, and she went on to play Sue Ellen Mishke (who truly epitomized "real and spectacular"). You don't think it was a great cameo in Glengarry Glen Ross? Its obvious to me that he's the only talented Baldwin, but I think he does have some talent.
  24. Maybe its better in the performance but that transcript reads like a typical shitty SNL sketch, one of hundreds that made it increasingly impossible to watch over the last ten years, if not longer.
  25. Just found Malice on cable, leading me to think of this silly poll. I don't watch the current TV show so if there's something truly better than any of these three, sorry. Schweddy Balls
