  1. Have to disagree on this - for some excellent blues solos I recommend Benny Carter's Central City Sketches, a big band recording with Lewis on piano for a portion of the tunes (can't recall who the other pianist was). Sorry, but the MJT recorded some fine LPs for Vee Jay.
  2. The MJQ was one of the first groups I ever saw live, within a year or so of my discovery of jazz. I had a roommate who was more into contemporary jazz but strongly encouraged me to see them when they played in St. Louis (Question for St. Louis folks: what was that relatively small auditorium with great accoustics? The Kiel Auditorium? Its been so long ...). Anyway, that started me on a major MJQ (and Bags) kick. You're right, MG, about how Connie Kay swung the band. I loved how he played "The Cylinder" that night. I never went as deep into the "Third Stream" LPs as it was Bags' earthiness that attracted me the most, so I was like you in that regard, too. I need to find time to spin some MJQ soon.
  3. I think both Kenny and Moose are a tad older than me, and a fine example of Kenny's comment about history and baggage. Seger was all over Album Oriented Rock radio when I started listening and so as a musical soundtrack to a life, it something I'll never stop enjoying. When you've never had any "Night Moves" and have been doing a lot of solo "working and practicin'" how can it not hit you in a certain way? *************************** For MG and Jim and the topic of sermons, can either of you comment on the recent release by Acrobat, Bob Geddins Big Town Records Story? It sounds like a mixture of the sacred and profane, I've never gotten into gospel or sermons so I'm afraid I'll only be listening to the pure blues sides on this one. But I remain curious and keep going back to the Amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/Bob-Geddins-Town-Rec...howViewpoints=1
  4. Such as, is it true that if sandwich meat is cut paper thin, it tastes better? What kind of cheese does he prefer on his sammitch? Is it as aggravating to him as it is to me when the sub shop loads up on the lettuce?
  5. Kenny, Yes, I have a couple earlier records, like Live Bullet - "Turn the Page" was an early favorite of mine, and I always wondered (but have never bothered to check), is the live version the only recording of that track? My friends and I always wondered why there is no audience reaction when he introduces it. If we were in the audience we would have been hootin' and hollerin'. I think that living in Michigan, Joe and Jim came to loathe Seger, but I'll always listen to him ahead of anything by Springsteen, who he used to be compared to - even the Tom Cruise track! (IMHO, Stranger in Town is the album Night Moves almost was.)
  6. HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO BET THE MOTHER FUCKING SEASON IS OVER???' A part of the game or not, its time, while Joba The Fat Ugly Fuck is in the game, to start using Teixeira for target practice, as he did with Youkilis.
  7. This better be Lester's last I-Fucking-Suck game. Or else, the Mother Fucking Yankees will get their champagne wishes this fall, and I will want to DIE.
  8. Given how most people seem to crap on him, I doubt there'd be much interest in my Bob Seger CDs (which go from Night Moves to Nine Tonight).
  9. Weird. I don't even see a box with a red x or anything where I pasted the image. It looks just the way you quoted me, as if my comment ended there.
  10. But. . if you did the right investigating, you'd know who she is! Well something went wrong there, I tried to add an image of Marlena Shaw's Who is This Bitch, Anyways album. Reading the AMG reviews, this woman sounds like a female version of Blowfly or something. Not my cuppa ...
  11. Forgive me but after seeing this thread and doing some investigating, all I can say is
  12. Good to see you, MG, I hope this return is indeed permanent.
  13. Haven't seen that its 100% official but it does make sense, as Lester's performance since late May matches up with anyone in the league, including Lincecum - I saw that they had almost the exact same ERA, over that stretch, and Lester did it in the DH league! Nevertheless, Beckett is crucial to October. He has to remember that its playoff time and do what he's done in the past. I'm just glad he's stopped giving up the long ball after that awful stretch. I also think Lester in Game 1 against the Angels has another advantage - they haven't seen him this year, which means they haven't seen the changeup that he mixes in now.
  14. OK, so the Rangers lost again to the A's and the Red Sox, behind another excellent outing from Buchholz, seem to have their game in hand against the Royals. That would drop the Magic Number to 3. The Yankees have clinched a playoff spot but, being the class organization they are, did not celebrate on that day earlier this week, preferring to celebrate a Division championship when it happens. The Magic Number for that is 5. So, in order for the Yankees to celebrate in front of the Red Sox, they need to sweep this weekend's series. However, if the Red Sox sweep, or win two while the Rangers lose once (they host the Rays) or win once while the Rangers lose twice, then the first champagne drenching of the carpet at Yankee Stadium III will be by the Boston Red Sox. I gotta say that would put a smile on my face. Of course, Yankee fans will counter that its the last team to celebrate that really matters, but you gotta believe that the sight of the Sox celebrating will stick in the craw of a few Yankee fans. Can you imagine if the Yankees do sweep but the Rays sweep the Rangers, too? It would be the first champagne celebration to take place simultaneously in the home and visitors clubhouse. If it happens, thank you Bud Selig.
  15. OMG this is the funniest damn thing. I've had these tracks for quite a few years, ever since I helped Marty by transferring his reels to CDs many moons ago. I'm pretty sure I was the source for the original Dime upload, if it was a compilation titled Buddy DeFranco Mid-50s and sourced as Reel - Goldwave - CDR - FLAC. David in Taiwan seeded a lot of stuff I sent his way, including that one iirc. Vic, I'm sorry I didn't get these to you sooner but I had no idea at the time that you were looking for them or that they had any commercial release. Marty had his recordings as trades, or he captured them on reel off of the radio.
  16.
  17. So I trust someone is taking care of this for Vic? I'd do it but I haven't been checking out Dime very often for at least the last year.
  18. There have been about a half dozen times that someone has asked what his acronym means. About ten times someone has explained it. So if you simply read this thread you might pick up on it. Its not an Eastern thing, its an O-thing! But I guess you're just a half-assed baseball fan who thinks the world somehow revolves around a team that hasn't won a World Series in several generations, and doesn't even pay attention to other National League teams. That's just fucking lame.
  19. The Phils have not been listed in the Wild Card standings since about three years ago, so why would anyone reference a Wild Card magic number? Have you noticed the Phillies as a team to beat in your wild card dreaming?
  20. And J.H. is referencing the Magic Number for the PHILS TO CLINCH THEIR DIVISION. It has nothing to do with the Wild Card, which made your comment nonsensical. Furthermore the Giants don't have a Magic number, they have a Tragic number: The number of Colorado wins and Giant losses that will end their postseason dreams. 7
  21. Congratulations, Vic! Glad I did my part, I was trying to keep an eye out for the DeFranco's that didn't get included in the Mosaic but now I know I can call off the search.
  22. Web Log = Blog
  23. These are the fucking games I hate Fran-COMA. The Royals are swinging the bats pretty well, its 9-5 after five unimpressive innings from Wakefield (7 walks) and the game is being played in heavy fucking rain. Meanwhile, Delcarmen has been pitching himself out of the fucking postseason roster with brutal performances. Francona said the last time that he wanted to give him a chance to get his shit together in a low pressure situation, and he was so bad it became a save situation. So why would you call on this worthless POS, in the rain? He's likely to get better finish on his pitches under these conditions? Absolutely brutally stupid managing, and its rewarded by that asshole giving up three runs and leaving with the tying run at second base, which I am sure Bard will allow to score now. Seriously, what possible purpose is served by having Delcarmen pitch. Does he fucking have a bet riding on the outcome and wanted to ensure they'd lose? Fucking Christ. NOW ITS FUCKING 11-9. MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST.
