  1. He does want "collector's" prices on most stuff but its a cool way to blow an hour or two looking through the merchandise. Way back when, he was a good source for Japanese BN vinyl on things that you never figured would see the light of day on CD. I also recall a promotion he ran where a $100 purchase got you a set of Herman Leonard "Images of Jazz" posters - Miles, Bird, and Monk. I spent so much he gave me two of each. One set went to Sally White of Sally's Place in Westport, CT and the other has been hanging over my desk ever since.
  2. No wonder the Boston blogs are describing the games as "like home games".
  3. Or how about Julian Tavarez, Boston's number 5? 6 IP, 6 Hits, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's Needed 11 fewer pitches, too. Yankee fans can take what they want from this, but most scouts in attendance saw a mediocre pitcher who wouldn't have made it out of the fifth inning against decent AL teams. I'm guessing that he'll switch places with his boyfriend, Pettite in order to face the Diamondbacks on Thursday instead of the Mets on Friday. No reason not to let him miss another decent offense.
  4. I think its extraordinarily presumptuous to think that people who aren't jazz fans to begin with would be interested in hardly anything you want to bring. I've tried the proselytizing thing during road trips with friends and it never ever works. Bring all the pop/rock/whatever greatest hits discs that you know these people will enjoy (and hopefully you can stand too), and hope that you can play two or three jazz things that you'll enjoy and won't drive other people nuts. Or else invite everyone to bring four or five discs of their own choosing, and rotate the CD programming among the group. Otherwise plan on carrying on a conversation.
  5. So Clemens made his start without rupturing anything, got a little better as the day went on against an utterly crappy lineup, and then they cued up "Rocket Man" as he walked off the mound to the cheers of the adoring crowd. Too bad we didn't hear this little known verse: And all these road trips I just can't stand I only pitch one day a week The Family Pla-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-n For The Rocket Man
  6. What I'd like to know is if anyone is asserting that this album doesn't "work" because of Gene Harris and/or the trio.
  7. Well, with the Yankees crawling back toward near-respectability (winners of 7 of 8; only three games under .500 and 5 1/2 back of Detroit for the Wild Card, and Clemens set to return today) will we see the return of the Yankee fan contingent? I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that JD Drew will take his big night (2 HR, a double and a career high seven RBI) and start performing like he was supposed to all along. Timlin is reactivated today and it looks like JC Romero is the odd man out. A fairly decent ERA but Romero had a WHIP of 1.9 and a BAA of over .300, and there was hardly a difference between lefties and righties. With Javy Lopez the only pitcher with a minor league option, I was afraid they'd send him down instead so I am glad that they recognized who is the better pitcher. I would think that Romero still have value on the trade market, and they've got ten days to trade him or release him. The interesting question now is what they will do when Lester is brought up (I still can't believe they are having him make more rehab starts, he's got an ERA under 1.5 against AAA lineups!). If they send Lopez down that leaves Okajima as the only lefty in the pen (and Kyle Snyder has excellent splits against LH hitters). Personally I don't see how they can make that move. I'd figure on Piniero or Tavarez getting traded when that happens and hopefully it will be Piniero, who hasn't exactly been overwhelming out of the pen, while Tavarez has that rubber arm and is just happy to have a job. Plus, the fans have started to appreciate what a nutty character he is - as long as he's not put in for high-leverage situations, I think he'll be effective and not incur the fan's wrath. What do you think, Zen?
  8. Well, I also skipped this thread when it first came up since I could never comprehend the urge to get a tattoo. But on the issue of wearing a wedding band - I was like Jim A. - never having worn a ring before, it was a weird feeling that just took some time to get used to. It felt weird originally, now it feels weird if I take it off. I've always taken it off in the shower though - I don't like the sensation of slapping my skull while I shampoo. So I leave it with my glasses while I shower. On the other hand, if my wife needs to take her rings off, they never leave her body - she holds them in her teeth. That's how important the symbol of our vows is to her.
  9. Nothing like some of the quotes listed so far, but I was in the jazz section of a chain store in Tallahassee when someone approached me thinking that I worked there and asked me if I had any "Speero-Geero". I told her I didn't work there but someone came over to help her. As I walked past her to flip through the Sonny Stitt section, she said "I don't think its Speero Geero. How about Dave Cruisin?" I didn't know whether to at her or .
  10. If it is true: Number one, it sounds to me like they are eliminating future reissues of material that hasn't seen the light of day. That's distressing for all of us still hoping that Paul Bryant's LPs will see the light of day, but I hardly think its a complete disaster. Number two, I don't they aren't tossing it all into a landfill. Number three, as JLarsen stated, Concord wants to get its money out of its investment. Can that really be done with comps, Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Stax and CCR? Lastly, I've got too much f-ing music anyway. Between the music I've purchased in the past and haven't nearly acquainted myself with enough, concerts from Dime, and my new fascination with blues, I could quit adding music to the collection today and not run out of music to listen to for the rest of my natural life. In short, I'm not going to freak over this rumor. I'll live very nicely, thank you, if Concord never reissues anything ever again.
  11. Believe me, there is an enormous number of people in this country and around the world who believe it is news.
  12. A thousand and a great big BWAAAA HAAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA!!!!!!!
  13. That would put him on the Vibrations LP, which was the first one with Gene Harris doubling on organ. Leonard Feather's liners identify him as being from Cleveland, playing with Erskine Hawkins and Cootie Williams and later working with Red Garland, Randy Weston and "several prominent singers". RIP.
  14. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/08/insurance...g.ap/index.html The good news is that convicts who hurt kids are among the lowest of the low in prison and he will certainly get his (presuming he is convicted).
  15. Exactly. You might as well be saying, "If the Three Sounds had a different pianist, MC would be reissuing more of their albums."
  16. The former Gene Harris Fanatic approves. Now I'll have to remember to un-mute the TV when that spot comes on.
  17. Like shit. Who better than Gene Harris to play a set of late night blues? Its fine if people don't particularly care for this record, but there should be no doubt that it is the perfect combination of musicians and tunes.
  18. It's all my fault! AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!! Thank God Curt got the last out to end the losing streak. Should be real interesting to see his comments about the start on his blog later today or tomorrow. 38pitches.com Speaking of, three starts ago when he got utterly destroyed, I posted on his board to the effect that he is pathetic, if he thinks he's an ace he's got another think coming, and that I thank God Theo didn't give him his extension. Funny thing is that if you take out his starts against the Yankees, he's actually been outstanding against everyone else, a BAA near .200, ERA in the low 2s as well. This start only helps those numbers.
  19. It would be so much easier to deal with the suspense if we weren't ahead only because Papi hit a homer in the first inning. I've been "watching" through the MLB Gameday software but I'm trying to decide whether or not to switch to the Gameday audio feed to hear Joe Castiglione with the call. You know how you don't want to shift positions on the couch for fear of "jinxing" your team? Same thing. Plus, the feed is slower than Gameday, which is also behind by a moment or two. ESPN News has the updated out total faster than any of them.
  20. Checking out the sound clips, I thought the Frank Foster and the Turrentine sounded decent to very good; since I have 1/2 of each of these, I'll have to put these on the list. The others don't especially float my boat (the Hill) don't offer anything new (the Cox) and got a bad review from SS, which is good enough for me (the Smith).
  21. As the former Gene Harris Fanatic, I can assure you that you would be incorrect. There are no redeeming features or moments on those albums. I beg to differ. I figured you might.
  22. that's the only thing satisfying about that game. I think maybe it should have featured a line of Corrections Officers waiting to be serviced by the heir-head. You manipulate her hands to unzip them as they move down the line.
