If you're referring to T-Bone Walker: I Want A Little Girl It was originally a Black&Blue recording made in France. It has Hal Singer on tenor and George Arvanitas on piano and organ. In the French reissue (Feelin' The Blues) there are a few extra tracks with Jay McShann and Eddie Cleanhad Vinson. This one I like a lot. T-Bone also plays piano on one tune. F I've got that Black & Blue reissue, and its definitely a good 'un.

OK. Goldwave changed the method of selecting parts of a sound. The old (and better) way can be accessed through clicking Options -> Window Click on Use left and right mouse button selection method Now, when you right click on the end of a song, the end point is selected. Left click at the start of the song. Choose "Save Selection As" from the File menu and call it Track 005. Now, Right click where you put the previous START marker. You've now changed this to the new END marker. Left click at the start of Track 004. Choose Save Selection As and save it as track 004. Lather, rinse and repeat, and you can split up your tracks very quickly. Now, for "equalization" or really I think it would be called normalization, there are two options: Burning programs like Nero have options that will boost levels across all tracks of a CD. If that is an option for you, you might try it and see what happens. With Goldwave, open one of the tracks you've saved. Click on Effect -> Volume and choose "Maximize" There are presets like "full dynamic range" or you may simply choose 90%. This will boost all levels to 90% of the maximum. If you have some tracks that are louder, this will bring them down a bit. The low tracks will get a bigger boost. If you don't want to use the pre-sets, you can enter a number in the box at the upper right. When I want really strong levels, I'll go around -.5 which is equivalent to 95% of the max (don't ask why you can't just enter the percentage you want - for some reason it is in DBs) You can also use the slider, but its not that sensitive so I always enter a number. Basically, you want to apply the same effect to all tracks, and you should end up with improved fidelity. Only caveat to that is that for the tracks you boost, you are bringing up both the signal and the noise floor. In some cases you may discover that the tracks don't sound as good as you hoped, because the increase is so great that the noise really comes out, too. And then when you play one of the tracks that had strong levels, the absence of the noise floor will be very pronounced. if that turns out to be the case, the answer is real simple - experiment with the best increase for the low levels that still sounds good, and doesn't sound shitty next to the high level tracks. good luck!

Oh, she's a hundred times nicer than Ms. Ray.

Is it a music CD in the F drive or is it a data disc? If it is a music CD, you need to extract the files into a format that you can edit. Use Tool ---> CD Reader choose the files you want and click "Save" You need to write a path to where you want to put the files (don't worry about creating a folder, if the path doesn't exist it will ask if you want it to create it). Now, are you trying to save the file as an MP3 or something like that? Pick the file attributes you want. (WAV is the standard type for editing - PCM signed 16 bit stereo is equivalent to redbook CD) If the disc in your drive is a data disc, then its very simple: Click Open and navigate to the disc drive. If the files are in a format that Goldwave recognizes, then you can open them. Next question is, are you interested in the same thing that jsngry is, or are you using Goldwave for a different purpose?

Before he made it big as "Crocodile Dundee", Paul Hogan had a TV show in Australia (think Benny Hill) and my father's company, Gould Entertainment, had distribution rights in the US, and that was his first attempt to make an impact in the biggest entertainment market. One of the best segments I remember (and it was a very funny show) was a video vignette of Hogan doing pratfalls, while the main eye candy on the show, a stunning blonde with a killer body, strutted through the scenes in her Daisy Dukes, all to the sounds of "Hot Legs". Ah, I remember it like it was yesterday. (to complete the story of my Dad's involvement with Paul Hogan, after the movie became such a huge hit, my father's phone rang off the hook with TV stations that now wanted to run the Paul Hogan Show. And just when Dad was positioned to make a killing, Hogan's management pulled the plug. Said they didn't want to allow his old, sometimes risque show, to get a lot of attention. Something about a different image.

This one has to be number one on the list, imo. Some jazz guys are on it too, including Barney Kessell for a track or two, plus Eddie Chamblee and Plas on tenor.

That's what I use. Shareware available on the site, or else its something like $30 American to purchase. Sounds like this a project much like receiving a live recording that isn't track indexed. May I suggest that the way you want to do the breaking up is from the end of the file to the beginning. In other words, find the starting point of the last song. When you've saved that song, move the end point to the starting point and work backwards to find the new starting point of the previous track. By doing it this way, you'll never be confused about end points, because you won't be moving them around.

I believe if you burn this as a CD, you'll be able afterwards to extract them into a format that will be useful.

Drew & Helton would be two big question marks in my mind. Helton is on the downside of a very good career; a lot of those doubles were because of the big field at Coors. I'm not certain of that. His hit chart at MLB shows that he's mostly a pull hitter (all of his homers at Coors were to RF, most of his doubles, too). But remember that Fenway has a huge right centerfield gap, an enormous amount of acreage to hit a line drive double into. What's more disconcerting is that being a pull hitter, he isn't likely to come to Fenway and use the Monster. Drew is less of a pull hitter and he ought to use the Monster effectively - when he plays. Again its going to come down to how much Colorado gives up and what they get in talent. If it were a total salary dump, I'd be more agreeable. Someone on the sonsofsamhorn site pointed out that the Sox have a lot of money coming off the books soon, and with young, cost-controlled pitchers coming in, there can be flexibility to handle an oversized contract. Of course I don't really think this is the right oversized contract. Meantime, the Boston writers are picking up on this, and the consensus is that the Sox aren't hot for Helton, they're happy with the lineup, and that its up to Colorado to make it worth their while or to bring in a third team to make things work out. So I'm glad they're playing hard to get, as opposed to their drunken sorority girl come-ons to Drew.

Well here is what Buster Olney is saying (got this from the MLB Red Sox discussion board): Clearly Olney likes this deal a lot more than I do. I'm beginning to wonder if its possible this will go down, with Theo deciding to do something that's in the team's interest now but not worrying about the long-term consequence. This is why: Even with Drew, the Sox lineup isn't up to the standards of the Yanks. As Olney says, Helton to Youk is a pitcher's nightmare (even more so if Crisp has a bounce-back season) so maybe they want one more impact bat. I have to say though that if this deal happens, I have to believe they are going to pass on Clemens, and as I've said before, Clemens fixes the problems in the Yankee rotation - you can't let him go there. I still say he's the piece that would blow the Yankee rotation away, both for our having him and for their not having him.

There's obviously some juice to this story as Foxsports.com is reporting that Hansen is the cornerstone of what is being offered (or what the Rockies are asking). Also suggests that Lowell could be shipped to San Diego for bullpen help, which makes it more palatable in that Lowell is probably gone after this season anyway. But with Gonzo gone, putting Youks at third really weakens the left side significantly. Youks is a solid defender but he isn't Lowell. Lugo and Youk means more groundballs get through and more errors. As far as Matthew's point goes, I've thought a little more about that. First thing to remember is that Helton is a totally different ballplayer than Bischette, so your drop-off should not be nearly as much. Another thing is that Bischette came to Boston at the absolute end of his career (he was 37) while Helton is 33. So the potential for some level of performance still exists. Heck, and this may be the reason that they are talking with the Rockies, Helton's OPS this year, which was down significantly, was still higher than Youk's. So potentially you still are improving the team's first base production, even if he'll never attain the level of prime-era Helton. I also hear that he's had back issues for a while, but I don't get that, because until the last two seasons, he consistently played 150+ games every single year, and the reduction in the last two is only into the mid 140s. One other positive factor is that he's guaranteed 90 million over the next six years, but you're obligated to have him on the roster (or pay him) for only 5. That 90 million includes a 4 million dollar buyout for the sixth season (or its a 23 million dollar option). So at least he wouldn't be taking up roster space quite so far into his late 30s, and the buyout will probably be downright cheap when average salaries are 3 million this year, and the buyout is six years away. I still don't like it overall, but maybe Helton also offers some protection for Drew? I mean, with his batting eye, you could definitely put him in behind Manny when Drew gets hurt. Maybe I'd like this deal more if we land real bullpen talent for Lowell ...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO The Sox already enjoyed that sight: In 107 games in 2001, Bichette had 12 homers, a .286 BA, .325 OBP and was through after that year.

Just when I thought the Hot Stove League was over, Rockies Discussing Trade of Helton to Red Sox WTF???? Why the hell would Theo even consider taking on the contract of a soon-to-be 33 year old who has 6 years and 90 million dollars coming to him? The worst contract in the majors, and Theo is even considering it? The only way it works is if the Rockies take about 60 million, and even then, what are you going to get when this guy is 37 or 38 or 39? And where does he play? I want Youks on my team (and why would you move him) so I'd have to guess that they'd move him to third and ship Lowell out (who only has one year left anyway). Now, having said that, I've just looked at Helton's career numbers, and they are somewhat eye-popping. .333 career BA, .430 career OBP, .593 career slugging, only one year in his career that he's struck out more than a hundred times. But how much of that is the Rockies effect? Looking at his splits, of course all of his offensive numbers are lower on the road, though he still has a lifetime BA of .294 and an OBP of .393. But then there's the clear fact that he's in the decline phase, with no 100 RBI season since 2003, and last year saw his lowest SLG% of his career. The only way this works is if Colorado takes a massive amount of salary and we give up virtually nothing in return. And even then I'll be hating this guy when he's 35 and cursing Theo for making the deal.

I remember one day I was on the air during a remote and I needed a song quick and I put on a live copy of James Taylor doing "Steamroller Blues". I thought -James Taylor-family friendly-right?-wrong!!!-defintely not a family friendly version of the tune. At first I read this as "needed a quick song" and I was thinking ... that's one of the longest songs in his catalog.

If this was on the mid-70s Weston double LP reissue, then the BFT rule that says you will own at least one track yet not identify it continues its amazing streak. Only my early AM laziness keeps me from checking.

E.T.A. is an English acronym for Estimated Time of Arrival. I always took it to mean that since at this point Watson was a young guy, as were most of the guys in the Messengers then, that it was a reference to all the young guys coming, or that they were just about there.

I really don't know how I missed this. I do have this on CDR. I checked AMG and they don't list the tune, and I had no reason to dig out the xerox I have of the cover and notes to double check. Thanks, Ray, for bringing up what is almost certainly the single worst thing Gene Harris ever recorded, at least of that series of LPs in the 70s that I kept. The "Yesterday" part sort of approximates the soulful piano of the Sounds era. There are two or three tunes like that. This I think fits into the "Today" concept, a relatively current hit, with a weird mix of straightahead Gene and *&^&% Gene. I guess I should be thankful you didn't select anything from the "Tomorrow" tunes, because if "Something" deserves a dozen then the rest of that album deserves a thousand.

I really don't want to be the board nag but I can't help it: Why does February's BFT have a discussion thread started with almost a week to go in January? Why is the discussion thread started before the answers are posted in the previous BFT? That's the process we agreed to.

I can't believe that's what he'll say/do. What's to stop them from disabling him and then attempting to cancel the last two years of the deal?
-
Discussed here, among other threads Why would some idiot sell this on craigslist "cheap"? They didn't know what they were getting? They aren't jazz fans?

Yeah, but Maria is tall and skinny and Serena .... isn't. Although I have to say that Mary Carillo on ESPN.com wrote that Serena has played her way into shape this tournament, that her clothes looked tight at the start, and she looked chunky, but that now they look loose. Sorry Jeff, I just can't deal with that Serena booty. At the same time, I can't deal with Sharapova's "orgasm shtick" but there's an answer for that: put on some jazz or blues and leave the sound off. I guess the women's final is Friday night at 9 pm in the states? (Eastern) I hope it doesn't go too late, I do want to see it. I will give Serena her props though in that only the Williams sisters seem capable of taking so much time off, getting hurt, watching their rating plummet, and then come into a Grand Slam and reach the final and have a strong shot at winning it all. As far as the men go, it would take an act of God to beat Federer. Just like it would take something extraordinary to keep him from beating (and maybe obliterating) Pete's Slam record. He's the Tiger Woods of professional tennis, and a wonder to behold. (He's also clearly the superior athlete than Tiger, but that's another argument for another thread).

At least the team has significant out-clauses: If he misses significant time due to an injury related directly to the shoulder issues that team doctors identified, the last two years of the deal can be cancelled. Same with the last year, if he misses time in the fourth year. Of course, that only covers us on this aspect of his health; any other reason that he goes down (and yes, I know that he will) and they're stuck with that inflated contract. The way I've come to look at it is that when healthy, he is an improvement defensively (especially since he can play CF too), in OBP and SLG, over Trot (who was going to get hurt and miss time anyway given his last three years). When he gets hurt, more time for Wily Mo. We've also got some strong OF candidates who are knocking at the door, or will be by 2008, although none of them have the potential to hit behind Papi and Manny. Even more important than his health may be how the fans react to his apparent indifference. If they can manage not to run him out of town in the first two months, may be he settles in and produces. Yeah, I know, I'm putting lipstick on a pig. Its a shitty deal, especially when there was no other team bidding for his services, and you still give him five years. I just gotta hope for the best.
