What records disappointed your expectations?
Dan Gould replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
"Soulville." And I agree, was disappointed when I got it at the time it came out. Just compare it to the way Webster sounds on Harry Edison's "Sweets," from about the same time. Uh oh... I am planning to order Soulville and Meets Oscar Peterson from yourmusic -- should I avoid? Guy Meets OP is the better date and I wouldn't avoid either. I prefer Soulville myself, but Chuck is right, you shouldn't avoid either. -
Did I see in the new Downbeat its a John Hicks tribute, or dedicated to him?

I wish I had those! MG Have you checked Amazon Marketplace? I'd be really surprised if the latter two aren't there, at very reasonable prices.

The Most Horrible Sound in the World
Dan Gould replied to rostasi's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I haven't gone to the site but is "horrible scraping" equivalent to "nails on blackboard"? Because that has to rank #1 or #1A. -
How did you 'hear' about the Organissimo.org forums?

Lois is nuts or a flat out liar if she tells people that Jim has the same policy. -

sprinkled liberally with ducats, I imagine. -
It's kind of admirable in a way, though as it has been almost 8 years since buying his 3rd album he is moseying along. But resources & time are finite, and maybe he's limiting himself to just 1 this year because he needs more Gene Harris. Well, we can only hope! Doin the Thing is definitely one that I played over and over again, and the Paris disc got a couple of listens and then into the archives. Can't comment on the audio improvement of the RVG, but if you like extreme funky-bluesy-soul, this is a must-have.

got a copy of Grant's "Sunday Mornin'" for $2&#
Dan Gould replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Anyone else read that as $28 with an extra character there for no reason? Or was that what you were going for, CJ? Definitely a nice find, I love anything Kenny Drew was on for BN. -

I don't know about that. If everyone plays "fine", is your disappointment based solely on your expectations due to the chosen title? I thought the LP was more than fine; my problem is I always prefer Fathead's tenor to his flute. -
I thought NYC real estate was expensive...

Well, clearly the first renovation has to be the installation of one of those beds that folds into the wall. -

You can't go wrong with Horace, and I know that when I was more of a Horace newbie, I would never imagine telling myself that this next purchase would be it for the whole year. If you tend toward the more "modern" musicians, Cape Verdean is the way to go, though in that group, it would rank in the bottom third, for me. JM, Doin The Thing, Silver's Serenade and Silver's Blue would be my top 4, and it gets very tough to narrow it down from there. I guess that Doin The Thing and Jazz Messengers would be the two finalists. You can't go wrong there, but I can't parse it any further, so I am not going to vote.

How long have you been waiting for the chance to use that pic, Randy? -

Gene Harris Fanatic, AKA GHF Several factors led me to go with my given name: Chris A. commenting on people "hiding" behind an alias A desire for a "new start" on a new board, even though I didn't deny my previous handle I also wanted to get away from "Fanatic" as my political posts had led some people to assert that I was fanatical about politics when I am only fanatical about Gene Harris. -
I think that's some of the dumbest ignorant shit I ever seen posted here. That "edited by" notice makes me wonder what Michael really wanted to say.

Agreed. Don't understand why the Pats didn't try to run in the second half, keeping the ball away from Indy. I recall Jints-Bills, SB XXV (1991). NYG were heavy underdogs and offensively outgunned. The very first thing Parcells (adios, Bill; I used to love ya, but got sick of your travelling show) said re. game plan was "Shorten the game".... Especially on the next to last drive, when a first down would have won the game. Three straight passes. The first two were caught, but why risk an incomplete that stops the clock? Then on 3rd and 4, another pass, which was incomplete and stopped the clock. Maybe it didn't make a difference, but the least they could have done was get the clock down to the 2 minute warning or force Indy to use a timeout.

New `Idol' Season Shows Mean Streak
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't see how they are building themselves up at the expense of others. Randy didn't say "Yo, I played bass with Journey and produced hit records. You'll never make a hit record, dawg, but I have and I will again." He just says, "yo yo yo, dawg, its not good, man." Telling people they stink doesn't build oneself up. Its just telling it as it is. As far as the "idolization" goes, its a simple matter of modern popular culture. You're the "stars" of a hit tv show, people (sad, pathetic ones) are going to become fans, and you'll get the star treatment from the popular media. -

Believe me, this was hashed out in a variety of conspiracy theories. Bottom line was that it was poorly managed (moderators would disappear for months on end) and there was a lot of silliness. Then Norah fever hit, but BN's own bulletin board wasn't exactly head over heels in love with her. So the prevailing theory was that with Norah fans coming to the board and most people dissing her, BN pulled the plug. What was most disappointing was that the forum had an "Ask Tom at Blue Note" subforum where you got the straight poop from one of the bigwigs. Not that Tom came by every day, mind you, but it was nice to have that communication link. -
Wow. I read an article somewhere about the 'conspiracy theories" surrounding Parcell's slow process of decision-making. The one theory I really wondered about was whether his plan was to wait out the other coaching changes to leave Jones in a position with no decent options left.

Dan's Keys to the Game : 1) Bear defense vs Peyton and friends. 'nuf said. 2) Bear running game against rejuvenated Colt defensive front. This is the whole enchilada, imo, as the Bears can't afford to be in a situation where Rex has to perform. The Colt adjustment in the second half hasn't gotten nearly enough attention, and their front has performed so much better than they did in the middle of the season, its like a different team. Quite simply, the Bears have to win in the trenches and successfully move the ball on the ground. I think their defense is better than any Manning has faced and they can do that job, most of the time. The question is whether the offense will do its share.
